Sharks clinch Currie Cup

2010-10-30 19:22

Cape Town - Sharks young flyhalf Patrick Lambie scored 25 points in a 30-10 triumph over Western Province Saturday in the Currie Cup final.

Lambie, who turned 20 this month and is set to tour Britain and Ireland next month with the Springboks, scored two tries and kicked three conversions and three penalty goals.

Halfback partner Charl McLeod, another outstanding figure as the home team achieved an unexpectedly large victory margin, completed the tally with an opportunist try.

Province captain and flanker Schalk Burger touched down just before half-time and the try was converted by veteran fly-half Willem de Waal, who also kicked a penalty goal.

After a first half that produced 33 points, the second half was scoreless until two minutes from full-time when Lambie latched on to a loose ball and dived for a try he converted to complete a memorable Currie Cup season.

Sharks played like men possessed for most of the first half and led 23-10 at half-time as they sought a second title within three years after defeating Blue Bulls in the same ground.

Province were first to score with De Waal landing a penalty on 92 seconds after home captain and centre Stefan Terblanche was penalised for not releasing the ball.

But Lambie levelled with a fourth-minute penalty awarded for a ruck infringement and soon after a superb try by McLeod had many in the capacity 52 000 crowd on its feet celebrating.

McLeod kicked ahead after Sharks won a turnover, left wing Lwazi Mvovo won the race for possession and passed back to the scrumhalf who raced over the line unopposed and Lambie converted from in front of the posts.

De Waal, leading scorer in the competition this season, missed a kickable penalty attempt before Sharks delivered another huge blow to the visitors as Lambie waltzed past several tackles and held off Burger to touch down.

Lambie converted and added two penalties while De Waal failed again with a shot at goal to leave Sharks 23-3 ahead 26 minutes into a frenetic opening half staged in perfect conditions.

The desperation of 32-time champions Province showed as Burger was penalised for a high tackle on Lambie, who narrowly missed the resultant penalty and failed with an even more ambitious effort soon after.

Groggy Province finally spent some time in Sharks territory as half-time approached and Burger was credited with a try after a rolling Province maul drove Sharks back over the line. De Waal converted to close the first-half scoring.

Province came out firing in the second half, camping in the Sharks half for long periods, but as the game passed the hour mark there was no addition to the scoreboard as the home team defending superbly.

My hart is baie seer! Baie geluk, Sharks!!!

Someone please tell them that NO ONE REMEMBERS 2nd PLACE! Absolutely no BMT. Well done Sharks, there was only one team on the field today. WP jou k@k ding

Now what happened to the future of SA rugby Weeee Peee?? Thanks for a shocking curriecup final. Hope this not going to the future of SA rugby anymore, two teams in super 14 finals, no tir nations cup. Sorry to say, but I am concerned about the world cup next year. Well done sharks, you were the team of the day and the competition.

  • @Fluke - 2010-10-30 21:10

  • Maverick - 2010-10-30 21:26

It appears WP didn't pitch up for the game. But then, maybe the Sharks didn't either. It seems that WP played against Patrick Lambie. Well done Sharks. One consolation is that we still have a new trophy in the cabinet today. The U-21 Currie Cup Champions are who?........................Western Province.

  • big shark - 2010-10-30 21:29

  • Chris - 2010-10-30 21:29

I will always support WP and other chokers

  • bullshark - 2010-10-30 21:42

Never thought the Sharks would ever cause me so much pleasure ! And I am a big BB supporter. On the day, no one , not even my BB would've made it. The poor Stormer's shellshocked faces were priceless ! Reputations of especially Schalk, Jean, Willem and Duane'tjie were demolished - well done Sharks, but we'll be back . In the meantime, I'm a BullShark

  • Molefe - 2010-10-30 21:42

  • @fluke - 2010-10-30 21:45

Well done Lambie!!! Go SHARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well done to all the teams that put in all the effort - BUT the 'supporters' on these pages sometimes leave a lot to be desired!! It's a GAME gentlemen - and you are only watching it - not playing it! If this is what defines you as a person, then Lord help us! Stop the vile spewing - your mom would be sad to see what some of you are writing about our beautiful game. Now say sorry and make up - we have to play TOGETHER as BOKKE!!!

  • BLACK FLY! - 2010-10-30 22:06

  • Tannie Tokkie - 2010-10-30 22:12

  • bulawayo-based-bok - 2010-10-30 22:13

ANDRIES STRAUSS!!!!!!!!!! Defensive performance i have ever seen!!

  • BOKFAN - 2010-10-30 22:16

CLINCH??? What game did you watch?

  • Kevin - 2010-10-30 22:22

With the flat defense of the Sharks, de Waal should've chipped more to. He had a very bad game when he was needed most. .

  • Gee - 2010-10-30 22:23

To all of you out there who said Stefan was TOO old, the Sharks Back line was not as good as Western Provinces, Mvovo was not as quick as Aplon, all you bloggers who said WP would take it, to all the journalists out there who were so WP sided, to the Supersport presenters who said WP would win - well sorry for you ....sign sealed delivered The Sharks top of the log and CURRIE CUP CHAMPIONS FOR 2010....well done to everyone at the KZNRU - The Sharks - black and white , nothing else matters!!

  • Mike@CapeT - 2010-10-30 22:31

Well done Sharks! Your desire to win was there for all to see and when de Waal missed his two relatively easy kicks (for him), the writing was on the wall. As for Lambie....brilliant! Province have no excuses, they were outplayed by a better team!

  • Andre - 2010-10-30 22:51

Maverick, well done under 21 Champions, shit what an achievement. You Weer Probeer supporters allways giving the Bulls supporters stick. Umhmm, how long since a proper trophy though? Nine + 1 = 10 years correct?

  • Bonzi - 2010-10-30 23:22

Ja, ons sal maar WEER PROBEER. outplayed, outscored...but 127 years of history we have. We will be back. Well done Sharks, deserved! Die Kaap sal weer Hollands wees, O ja, hy sal, its been written in the stars over and over and over again. WP JOU LEKKER DING...IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING!!!!
