Cape Town - The Currie Cup Premier Division may yet consist of eight teams next year after some unions indicated they would like to see a revote on the decision.

The proposal to expand the Currie Cup from six teams to eight next year was not passed during a special general meeting held in Johannesburg recently.

The proposal, which was tabled with the SA Rugby Union (SARU) at the end of the Super Rugby season, was initially presented to the unions at a special general meeting held on September 19, but the vote was delayed until the 30th for further consideration.

While the final vote was in favour of the amended structure of the competition, with a 19/10 split, the motion didn’t carry because it required a 75% majority vote.

The Kings and the Pumas were set to be added to next year's competition before the voting process scuppered those plans.

EP Kings president Cheeky Watson recently said five smaller provincial unions - Boland, Border, SWD, Leopards and Falcons - voted against the proposal to expand the Currie Cup.

However, according to the SA Rugbymag website, there is still hope for the Pumas and Kings as South Africa's bigger unions are trying to organise a revote.

EP Kings acting CEO Charl Crous said they were informed by SARU that a number of bigger unions had written letters requesting a revote to take place.

Crous said the Kings would certainly welcome a revote, but that no date has been set for the recasting of votes.
