Cape Town - Bulls No 9 Pierre Spies talks about his injury, thoughts on the upcoming Currie Cup and his long-term goals.
How is the injury and do have any idea when your fans will next get to see you playing?
Recovery is going really well thanks, all is going according to plan and I'll be back on the field beginning next year.
It must be extremely frustrating to suffer with such a long term injury – how do you stay fit and positive?
Yes it has its challenges and you go through some lows. But it’s important to get a good perspective of where you're at and get motivation to where you want to go.
Your thoughts on the Currie Cup - who will be the Bulls biggest rivals, or is it the most open tournament of recent years?
It always is an open tournament- the team with the most points win! Lol
The Bulls experienced a really mixed bag of results in Super Rugby this season – what needs to change to ensure a consistently high level of play in the Currie Cup?
Injuries hit us hard this year but you can't plan for that. It's important that we build an experienced squad and keep them together. We've got great youngsters at the Bulls so the challenge is keeping the old heads.
There is sometimes talk about South Africa needing to agree on a playing style, how do you feel about that statement given the Bulls, Stormers, Sharks and Cheetahs all seem to have such different ways of playing rugby?
We're probably never going to agree on that in SA. But there's really only winning rugby and losing rugby.
What do you enjoy most about the Bulls way?
The culture is special. History, heritage and friendships. When we're at our best we score the most tries- that’s the aim.
You have been an essential part of the Springbok set – your thoughts on where the national team is headed?
I think the Boks are only going to get better. It’s such a great environment and bunch of players- a real privilege!
What are you immediate and longer term rugby goals?
My first goal is to make a successful return to the field helping the Bulls in next year's Super Rugby. Then playing for the Boks at the World Cup next year. I might enjoy an overseas stint soon, so we'll see!
What are you thoughts on the new PUMA Currie Cup kit - relieved there is no pink camo, stripes or spots?
I loved the camo, don't know what the fuss was about. I think the new one is beautiful, a traditional Bulls Currie Cup jersey.
Which boots do you play in and why do you chose to play in those particular boots?
I play in the evoPOWER boots which are an extremely comfy fit!
