Plumtree: Griquas a big threat

Cape Town - The Sharks will top the Currie Cup standings if they beat Griquas at home this weekend, but coach John Plumtree has warned that it won't be easy.

Latest Currie Cup standings

The men from Durban currently lead the competition with 30 log points, two ahead of the second-placed Golden Lions and victory on Saturday will assure them of a home final should they win their semi-final.

But the Sharks coach is wary, especially as Griquas also have a lot to play for. The men from Kimberley are currently in fourth position and they'll want to stay inside the four semi-final positions and also avoid the dreaded promotion-relegation game for the team that finishes last.

Griquas beat the Sharks 22-15 in Kimberley a month ago and Plumtree warned his side that Pote Human's men will take confidence from that game into the clash at Kings Park.

“We have an opportunity now and we need to try and match our performance in Bloemfontein (they beat Free State 37-30 last week) against Griquas this Friday," he told the Sharks website.

"They have pretty much beaten every fancied side in the competition and they’ll back themselves coming to Durban.

“They have their own ambitions as well and it’s going to be one of those really tough games. We have to make sure that we play very well, it doesn’t matter that it’s at home, they’ll come with a tough attitude.”

The clash at Kings Park kicks off at 19:10 on Saturday.
