Peyper to ref Currie Cup final

2012-10-22 14:10

Cape Town - Jaco Peyper has been rewarded for his outstanding performances in the 2012 season by being named as referee for Saturday’s Absa Currie Cup final in Durban.

Kick-off is at 17:00.

Peyper, who made his Test debut at Tier 1 international level in 2012, will take charge of the match between The Sharks and Western Province. It is his first Currie Cup final appointment.

“The appointment was made on merit as Jaco has had an outstanding season,” said Andre Watson, SARU GM: Referees.

“The decision was based on feedback over the season from provinces and from our own assessments. All appointments for finals are done on merit; this is SARU’s showcase weekend in terms of domestic rugby and we owe it to all stakeholders to provide the best possible service.”

SARU also announced that the Under-21 and Under-19 Cup finals will be refereed by Lourens van der Merwe and Rasta Rashivenge respectively.

Craig Joubert will take charge of the second leg of the Currie Cup promotion/relegation decider in Port Elizabeth on Friday night.

I believe a less pedantic ref would have been a better call. Jason Jaftha would have been my choice.

      dao.muangnoicharoen - 2012-10-22 15:08

this game will obviously be decided by penalties and that means the sharks will destroy the western province

      andre.brink.982 - 2012-10-22 15:35

Jaco Peyper is by far the best SA referee. Good luck to him. He is from the Free State and will not be bias.

      steyts - 2012-10-22 16:28

Jaco Peyper deserves this!! He has had an outstanding year with the whistle! All the countries in the rugby champs say that he is the best referee on the planet at the moment!! AND, WP has a better chance of winning the game with him refereeing than Craig Joubert!!!!!

Interesting post for you lot from another Site. Morne Steyn has the worst winning percentage out everyone from the 2011 Bok team, did you know that, South african winning percentage fom 2003 to 2009 was never lower than 75% thats with how many different flyhalves, it was always roughly the same. Steyn took over in 2009 and from 2009 to 2012 South african winning percentage has never been higher than 58 percent, from 2003 to 2009 average of 40 tries scored per year, Steyn took over and 2009 to 2012 we score an average of 18 tries per year. Fourie du Preez Test career 2004 - 2011 Mat 62 Won 33 Lost 18 Draw 1 70% win ratio Morne Steyn Test career 2009 - 2012 Mat 41 Won 23 Lost 16 Draw 2 57% win ratio I tried to find someone who started in 2009 I could only find Beast from 2008 but they have the same amount of matches just played at different times. Tendai Mtawarira Test career 2008 - 2012 Mat 41 Won 27 Lost 12 Draw 2 69% win ratio CAN ANYONE REMEMBER MORNE STEYN WINNING US A GAME AFTER 2009, WITHOUT GOOGLING IT. I KNOW HE WAS IN GAMES WE WON BUT GAMES WON DIRECTLY BECAUSE OF HIS EFFORT. ANYONE

Nou sal dit n 50/50 game wees, as dit Mark Hair was, sou die Sharks defnitief gewen het!!!

      TravieGrif - 2012-10-22 13:49

Hey Bakkies. You wiped your tears away yet?

      jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-10-22 14:14

You just quoted Naas blue, his words after the game, hehe!! But in all truth the bulls got hammerd!!! No Ref could have saved us!!

      TravieGrif - 2012-10-22 14:21

Blue, that wasn't the reason for the comment. The reason I said that is because Bakkies was all loud mouthed last week, asking if the Sharks were going to be crying after the game. But I doubt he would man-up and say that he was wrong and the Bulls were outplayed. I have said a few times that Lawrence didn't have a great game. It was quite weird, because he is usually a bit against the Sharks, but I do think that the Bulls forward who swore at him made a bit of an error, and he got more and more irritated. I cannot believe that he didn't award the try for the trip on Lambie, or a penalty try if wasn't happy that Mvovo had grounded the ball!

      alfred.neuman.988 - 2012-10-22 14:23

Blue Raven you might recall a conversation we had earlier this year concerning a certain Mark Lawrence and how his dodge decisions in the first two games of the S15 cost the Sharks a home final and therefore most probably the S15 trophy? Trust me the Sharks know how it feels to be in the wrong side of his whistle and I feel for you guys.

      bakkies.botha.39 - 2012-10-22 14:26

Blue Jaco is just kruiping gat with the Sharks, as per always!!! Travie, I did my crying in the rain, lol!

      lean.sadie - 2012-10-22 14:35

He should be sited raven? What does that mean? A Website dedicated to him? Bias, and blowing people up for being plain stupid, and not know the rules are completely different thing. Hell you guys were lucky to not have 2-3 yellow cards against you. If anything he was biased to the bulls. That trip on Lambie was a try, and swinging arms by Stein remover, haha classic.

      bakkies.botha.39 - 2012-10-22 14:43

Dink nie hy skree regtig vir die Bulle nie!

      TravieGrif - 2012-10-22 14:55

Ah-ha! Good one Bakkies. Respect to you mate. I was concerned you were just another troll on this site, of which there are plenty. Seems I may have been wrong.

      ReneMuller.XOXO - 2012-10-22 14:59

@Raven, also, when it was supposed to be a kick from the 22, and ML brought them back to the halfway line for a scrum, Jafta told him he was wrong, and ML replied something like 'technical blah blah blah' - bull man, he (and some other refs) think they are bigger than the game and the WORST of it all is, ML will be the man in charge training new up and coming referees. In 2 - 3 years time, we will have a bunch of young, cocky little refs who make up their own 'little rules' as the game progresses.

      jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-10-22 15:11

@Bakkies, hoekom vat jy n cheap shot op my??? Omdat ek nie heeldag troll en 11 jaar cupless, 11 jaar cupless skree nie en dalk iets sé wat sin maak??? @Raven, dag ons is vriende *snif snif* @Travie, dont let him fool you (Bakkies) just a troll allright!!! And its a-ha Lol

      john.comyn.18 - 2012-10-22 15:13

No ref could have saved the Bulls. Like I said before the game only a fool would have left CJ Stander & Hougie on the bench. I will admit Lawrence was poor. What irratated me was the way he coached the Sharks through the entire game and the Bulls were not afforded the same treatment. This is why a few Bulls lost it in the end.

      bakkies.botha.39 - 2012-10-22 15:21

As ek n bydra lewer kruip ek gat??? Nou lees sy laaste comment: Want jy kruip gat by die Sharks, iets wat Blue Raven ook van tyd tot tyd doen!!! Nee vrek man!!!

      TravieGrif - 2012-10-22 15:30

@Jaco, my 'Ah-ha' was supposed to be a bit of a joke, but I am no stand-up comedian! I am music mad mate so A-Ha are most certainly to be found in my collection. John, I agree with you about CJ Stander, and have been saying all season that he is one to watch, but not Hougaard. He is not a scrummie. I have been saying all year that he is not technically sound, and it was shown again. Two charge-downs, one leading to the try. He kicks too sideways, which means that he often kicks too low, which is why he gets caught from time to time. Nothing that can't be fixed, because he is a great player, but he needs work. Sadly Jano was nowhere, so maybe taking him off earlier would have been a good thing.

      bakkies.botha.39 - 2012-10-22 15:33

      Temper Temper!!!

  • ReneMuller.XOXO - 2012-10-22 13:26

Rasta Rasivhenge (U19) Referee is my favourite at the moment. He seems to be quite popular amongst the players too, he has a nice demeanor - other than that, they all 'suck a bit'

      TravieGrif - 2012-10-22 13:51

I agree Rene. He is a great ref, and I love the way he handles himself. I nearly wet myself laughing recently when he gave a monster prop a royal tongue lashing for using foul language...good for him. He did really well at the Aussie Sevens tournament too.

      wesley.rousseau.58 - 2012-10-22 14:03

yip he's a great ref, very straight forwards and knows his game, also handles the players very well, definite international ref one day

      ReneMuller.XOXO - 2012-10-22 14:29

@Travie, @Wesley, I hope he remains the way he is. 5 years ago, you would never hear about supporters/players complain so much about a ref. It has become a worldwide problem. The refs nowadays make it about themselves and not the game anymore. One set of rules, apply it 100% equal to both teams and bob's your uncle. The more help the refs are getting nowadays, the more they are getting it wrong. As for Jaco Peyer, come this Saturday (who loves the whistle) I hope he has a good match.

      TravieGrif - 2012-10-22 15:05

Yeah Rene, you are spot on again. I saw an article where there are calls for two refs. Reality is that it is not the fault of the refs, I don't think. I think that the laws especially at ruck and maul are so open to interpretation that the game is littered with 50/50 calls and questionable decisions. I think that the refs play what they see in front of them as much as they can. As for Saturday's game, I really hope that it is not decided by the whistle, but he does have a reputation for being very whistle-happy. Sharks Forever!

      dao.muangnoicharoen - 2012-10-22 15:25

re introduce raking and the breakdown will be reffed by itself forget crouch touch pause engage, let them scrum like they used to, no scrums went down. then we wont have all the guesswork at scrum time which totally messes up games and penalties are just awarded on a eeny meeny miny mo basis

  • john.maree.90 - 2012-10-22 13:33

So W.P will will 3 cups on Saturday! great stuff boys!!!

      a.j.bosch - 2012-10-22 13:38

  • a.j.bosch - 2012-10-22 13:35

Hey editor. When are you going to put up the article about Steyn being cited for his cowardly cheapshot?

      Barry - 2012-10-22 13:47

      Yes good point

      lean.sadie - 2012-10-22 14:36

What??,i hope he ref's better than the cheetha's play,a overseas ref would do the trick, but it could be worse!WP in 3 finals this weekend, better than any other province,HOW IS THAT,ding-dong!

      a.j.bosch - 2012-10-22 13:50

Not everyday you get 3 chances to choke in one day. ;-)

      lean.sadie - 2012-10-22 14:38

Bulls choked once alrdy, now for the next 2 in under 21 and 19 levels as well.

      jaco.schalkwyk.752 - 2012-10-22 15:07

@lean But imagine a team that has choked 11yr in a row

      lean.sadie - 2012-10-22 16:14

I don't see Mark Lawrence's name anywhere on the list. Is he on the bench for the Sharks?
