Cape Town - The Sharks have named their team to face Griquas in their opening Currie Cup game of the season at Kings Park on Friday night.
The Sharks team named boasts plenty of experience, while Sizo Maseko, Marco Wentzel, Edwin Hewitt and Rayno Gerber play their first Currie Cup games for the Durbanites.
Brynard Stander, a player in a similar mould to flank Marcell Coetzee, has been rewarded for impressing the coaches and makes up the loose-trio with Jean Deysel and captain Keegan Daniel.
Butch James partners Charl McLeod at halfback and Tim Whitehead - who returns from injury - forms a strong midfield duo with Louis Ludik, with Odwa Ndungane moving to fullback where he will play this season.
"We were very impressed with Odwa in training, his conditioning is fantastic and he's a leader. We see him primarily as a fullback now. He will help to give our backbone some zip as well. He's experienced, he organises the backs and he kicks the ball out of hand beautifully," said Sharks Director of Rugby Brendan Venter.
"Griquas are a clever outfit, they know how to do well in the Currie Cup, they've recruited a lot of old hands, senior players, clever players and it will be a tough start for us. We look forward to it and we want to measure ourselves against these people and see how good we can be."
Kick-off is at 19:10.
