Bees Roux starts for Lions

2013-09-10 12:44

Johannesburg - Prop Bees Roux will get his first start for the Golden Lions in the side's Currie Cup match against the Cheetahs at Free State Stadium on Friday.

"Our other tighthead, Ruan Dreyer, has played almost every minute of every game in the first round and deserves a rest," Lions coach Johan Ackermann said in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.

"This is a good opportunity for us to evaluate Bees Roux for the future, as he only has a Currie Cup contract. This gives us a strong and heavy pack of forwards for the game."

Roux's inclusion was one of four changes to the side which beat Griquas 38-32 in Kimberley last weekend.

The team would take to the field with a new front row. CJ van der Linde would start at loosehead prop while Jacques van Rooyen dropped to the bench.

Roux would play at tighthead in place of Dreyer, while hooker Willie Wepener received a starting berth ahead of Robbie Coetzee, who moved to the bench.

Flank Warwick Tecklenberg was promoted from the bench in the place of Jaco Kriel.

Kriel, who played well against Griquas, could come on as an impact player against the Cheetahs.

There was some concern over Lions captain and flanker Derick Minnie's availability but he was declared fit for the match.

"The knock that Derick took to the knee against Griquas only resulted in some bruising," Ackermann said.

"There was some initial concern that he wouldn't be eligible, but he has recovered and will definitely play against the Cheetahs."

The Lions arrived in Bloemfontein on Sunday, after they beat Griquas in Kimberley the day before.

This arrangement not only helped the team logistically, Ackermann said, but would also ensure his charges were fresh for the match on Friday.

"In the past we always drove to the venue the day before the game, which resulted in the guys being stiff and sore from the bus ride," he said.

"Now we've decided to make a little tour of it.

"The guys will enjoy a day off on Wednesday where they can just relax and unwind. On Thursday, we have the captains run before we meet the Cheetahs on Friday."

  • Nico Pretorius - 2013-09-10 13:26

Good side, should be a good game against Cheetahs, must just remember to defend this time and start playing when the whistle blows, not give them a 20 minute gap to dominate. GO LIONS!!

      Dewald P Montgomery - 2013-09-11 06:04

As ek my somme so pateties soos jy doen, dan merk ek met kommer dat die Bulle teen die Leeus verloor het, en dieselfde die Cheetahs gewen het. Dis jammer jy oorvereenvoudig dinge so. Dankbaar nie alle Kapenaars is soos jy nie, anders was ek nie so lief vir die plek nie.

  • Jammies Jamneck - 2013-09-10 13:38

Ja-Nee hier kom n ding. Net jammer Jaco Kriel word weer as impak speler gebruik. Laas teen die Cheethas op Ellispark was dit n gestojmmel. Ons het nou goeie momentum! Lions by 5...

  • Thenjiwe Sindi - 2013-09-10 14:37

So that he could have more money to kill black men and pay their wives.sad day indeed.

      Remo Liut - 2013-09-10 14:43

Who are you to judge him if he paid his dues to the family and they accepted it.

      Thenjiwe Sindi - 2013-09-10 14:46

I am a black South African

      Hunter Thompson - 2013-09-10 14:47

The cop was corrupt. It has NOTHING to do with colour.... Why does "everybody" see this as a racially motivated incident?

      Morne van Dyk - 2013-09-10 14:47

Sindi - Not black men, rather corrupt cops. He would have bliksemed a white cop as well.

      Hunter Thompson - 2013-09-10 14:48

Ok Thenji, so EVERY black on white murder is then racially motivated? And vice versa? You are stupid

      Thenjiwe Sindi - 2013-09-10 14:49

It had nothing to do with colour????? Do yo really beleave that?

      Hunter Thompson - 2013-09-10 14:52

Yes, I do. If the cop was white, he would have blixemed him too, the guy was trying to extort money from him. Doesn't make killing right, but he killed a corrupt COP. Not a white cop or a black, purple or orange cop...

      Martin Fourie - 2013-09-10 14:59

I was waiting for the race issue to come up and sadly Thenjiwe you did not dissapoint, this has to do with rugby, I think you are on the wrong forum. Welcome back Bees, pleased you are with the Lions now.

      Dave Ueckermann - 2013-09-10 15:00

if our prez can stay in power with all he has done why not can Bees carry on with his career?

      Bullfanswifes Givegoodhead - 2013-09-10 16:54

Thenjiwe tell your comrades to WORK ( wek ) for their money and maybe they won't end up being worm food. I don't hear you saying ANYTHING about corruption being wrong. Maybe you support it.

      Cliff Bradley - 2013-09-10 18:27

Thenjiwe Sindi And that makes what , besides an idiot !!!!! You support that murdering scum of a Mc Bride !!!!

      LouisBensch - 2013-09-10 18:25

Were you at the game when the Lions beat your queens in PE?

      Jean-Pierre Heyns - 2013-09-10 18:54

@ Stephan, were you at the game last month when GRIEKWAS beat the SAARKS @ Kings Park?

      Vickers Vermeulen - 2013-09-11 07:05

Stephan, Since 1938, how many times did EP/Mighty Elephants/Southern Kings win against NTvl/Bulls on Loftus? Have they ever scored more than 60 points against the Bulls? Are they currently top of the log in the first division and therefor deserving of a place in the premier division? So many questions so few positive answers...

Glad that Johan Ackermann is rotating his players throughout the tournament. Less injuries and fatigue in the long term.

  • Bullfanswifes Givegoodhead - 2013-09-10 16:08

Im disappointed in bees. He is such a big man , yet only manage to take out one corrupt cop. I should have taken minimum three. Ha ha maybe these windgat MUPPETS with a badge and a power trip will think twice next time

      Bullfanswifes Givegoodhead - 2013-09-10 22:55

Tyronne , im not religious. ( i have my reasons ). You are strongly against bees playing again , and i respect your view. You are one of the FEW posters on here who's banter and comments i enjoy. I just had the same experience as bees , yet mine lasted for hours , and was made to believe i would get killed. This in the name of fun for drunk cops. I don't condone blatant murder , yet i think this never the intention of bees. No one really know how quickly fist fight can turn deadly.
