Lions pip WP at the death

2012-08-25 18:45

Johannesburg - A last-gasp penalty from flyhalf Elton Jantjies has enabled the Golden Lions to beat Western Province in their Currie Cup clash at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday.

Jantjies's penalty gave the Lions a 26-23 (11-10 half-time) win after WP captain Deon Fourie gave away a careless penalty after the hooter had sounded.

The visitors stunned the hosts in the opening minutes of the match as they romped to a 10-0 lead after 13 minutes.

Province, employing a more expansive game plan than the Stormers did in the Super Rugby competition, crossed the whitewash nine minutes into the match.

They took the ball through a number of phases with some great interplay, leading to winger Gerhard van den Heever’s try.

Centre Juan de Jongh played a pivotal role in the lead-up to the try as he pierced the Lions’ defences with an injection of pace and side stepping.

Eighthman Duane Vermeulen, returning after a long injury layoff, made the final pass to Van den Heever who scored the try, with flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis converting.

Four minutes later Catrakilis succeeded with a penalty conversion to stretch their lead to 10 points.

Jantjies scored his side’s first points of the match with a penalty conversion in the 15th minute.

The hosts, however, still looked flat-footed as they battled to get possession to launch any kind of attack.

They finally seemed to kick on as Josh Strauss scored their first five-pointer of the evening after the side found some positive momentum.

Jantjies, in superb form, made a well weighted pass to Strauss who bashed his way towards the tryline and had to stretch to place the ball for the try.

While the Lions' playmaker flyhalf missed the conversion kick, he made up for the mistake shortly before the half-time break to give his side the lead for the first time in the match.

Jantjies continued his fine place kicking after the break as he added another penalty conversion to extend his team’s lead to four points.

His opposite number replied with a conversion kick of his own to reduce the deficit to a point once again.

As both sides’ defences held strong, it turned into a kicking duel between the two flyhalves, with Jantjies receiving the most opportunities at the posts.

He succeeded with two more penalties within two minutes to hand his side a seven-point lead, but Catrakilis kept WP within striking distance with his last penalty conversion of the match.

After Jantjies again extended the lead to seven points, Western Province struck a massive blow with prop Brock Harris powering his way over the line after Lions prop CJ van der Linde was yellow-carded for infringing metres from their own tryline.

Catrakilis converted to level the scores but his counterpart had the final say of the match.

Lions captain JC Janse van Rensburg made a bold call for a scrum on the halfway line rather than kicking for the posts.

His decision, however, paid off as the side progressed closer to the tryline where they received a penalty after Fourie's indiscretion, which gave Jantjies an easier kick for victory.

Jantjies obliged as his shot was on target to give the Lions their second win of the campaign.

Now for the Bulls and Bokke to win and my day is made! A Province loss is just as good as a Bulls win! Sorry ou Sakkie Papsak, jou team was nie goed genoeg nie. Congratulations Lions, you deserved this win! Blou Bul Groete!

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-08-25 18:49

Priesterb i don't even have to watch the Bulls game...Win or Loose my Saturday is made... I see Sakkie is already blaming the Ref...

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-08-25 18:54

What will be Allister's excuse this time? We did not read the game well and just should have kicked the ball out instead of trying to score a try in the last minute when we hardly could do so in the previous 80 or I am the comedian of errors or There is still a lot of hard work left?

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-08-25 19:00

SBTW Allister, Deon Fourie has the habit of giving away stupid penalties. Are you going to coach him or let him get away with it?

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-08-25 19:06

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-08-25 19:08

Oops AC, you first need to learn to count to 4 before you can concentrate on coaching discipline?

      franz.prade.9 - 2012-08-25 19:46

    WP JOU LEKKER DENG.... Haha...

  • sedick.gydien - 2012-08-25 18:47

As long as Fleck is the back line coach for WP/Stormers, they will continually struggle to score tries. The WP/Stormers back are incapable of passing the ball. I have seen schoolboys pass and run better than the WP backs…..They play exactly the way Fleckie used to play…..individualistic, run across the field, and unable to pass a ball……OH, and lets not forget the aimless kicking……even from turn-over ball….WP does not have a player problem, they have a COACHING PROBLEM…..can't wait to hear the crap cliches that Alistair blurts out again….."kicking game not accurate, chances not taken, in-experience, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH". Now he can't even BS about bonus points not being important – they are not even winning……..

      lean.sadie - 2012-08-25 19:11

Get rid of all of them, get Nick Mullet, no the real one, not the fake poster. This is pathetic, and if they keep these coaches I hope we finish last in the S15 next year, so they won't have a choice, but to get rid of these useless so called coaches.

      rocky.rockson.982 - 2012-08-25 20:21

Your backline also contains an unhealthy supply of midgets

      derick.pauls - 2012-08-26 09:40

Well said on all accounts Sedick, I agree 100%

  • dirk.naude.12 - 2012-08-25 18:50

  • jean.rossouwsa - 2012-08-25 18:56

hahahahahah!!!! BELAGLIK!!!!!!!

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-08-25 18:59

Jean not really their S15 team, but...

      lean.sadie - 2012-08-25 19:02

Yes, because the teams are exactly the same as they will be for super rugby right. WP sucks clearly, and they will till they get rid of Fleck at least, the rest too hopefully. But that statement is pure stupid, just like you.

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-08-25 19:22

  • lourens.vandervyver.798 - 2012-08-25 18:58

Amper WP!

  • lean.sadie - 2012-08-25 18:58

hAHA pROVINCE SUCKS, KEEP KICKING THE BALL, KEEP KICKING IT. Shouldn't even bother playing, kick them out, put Kings in. Its such a waste of time to watch any of there games. Thank goodness I Was only able to see the last 20 mins.

      rocky.rockson.982 - 2012-08-25 20:27

      bulla.loftus - 2012-08-27 09:45

The best that finish last in the hardest competition in the world, keep it up!. O wait, nm. WP sucks, but this is not the S15. This is more like the Vodacom Cup!

      lesbeen - 2012-08-26 11:16

Province have 7 players out... Lions have 9 players out through injury and bok call-up... So who is playing with their \b-team\?

  • Active - 2012-08-25 19:10

Great win for the Lions, Suck on that Saru, bring the southern losers for a play off and see who should be in the S15.

  • bfvillet - 2012-08-25 19:40

nearly got there today good upward curve after the game against the sharks, good to see the ball being spread out wide.Players making wrong desicions at crucial times but will come with time go province

  • fred.strassberger - 2012-08-25 20:07

Somebody please help. As far as I know, a ruck is formed when the third player arrives at the tackle situation. How then could Deon Fourie have then come in from the side? Look at the video; he arrived, made sure he was coming from behind and the stole the ball!! Touch judge also ruled Aplon in front of the kicker, when even slow motion showed it to be marginal.

      rocky.rockson.982 - 2012-08-25 20:30

      1) Tackle assist 2) Whether a pass is marginally forward or someone is marginally in front of the kicker, makes no difference, still an infringement. What a classic idiot post

      skinfaxi.mordor - 2012-08-25 21:04

The AR who made that call personally supports WP/Stormers....... it was marginal, marginally ahead and thus good call.

  • mahomedrafeek.goolam - 2012-08-25 20:18

SARU,now you guy's wanna tell me that the EP Kings gonna replace the Lions in the S151hen they just beat the team that finished at the top of the SA Franchises.I hope the Lions play the Sharks in the Final.

      rocky.rockson.982 - 2012-08-25 20:38

Saru will probably not reply to your post but thanks

      bernard.mackenzie.5 - 2012-08-25 20:48

Goolam. This was hardly a Stormers S15 side. But lets not let reality get in the way of your fantasy.

  • pierre.louw.547 - 2012-08-25 21:07

Have anyone noticed the inconsistencies in Stuart Berry's decisions during this match? If he asked the TV Ref to have a look at the chip and chase incident where the Lion player "knocked" the ball before it went over the "dead ball line" (which shortly afterwards resulted in a penalty for the Lions), then he should have done the same when Gerhard van den Heever chased his own chip on the Lions "dead ball line" and lost control of the ball. This should also have been a 5 meter scrum, but nope, he awarded a 22 kick-off. The off-side line also only seemed to have been applicable to WP (Weer Probeer). The Papsakke received man and ball at the same time on numerous occasions. I'm not supporting any of these two teams, but the sooner they remove this guy from the refereeing panel, the better.

      daniel.malan3 - 2012-08-26 01:48

Yes he really is pathetic. Not only during this match but all the others he has had control over. He can't even give the penalty on the right spot. Also, Fourie was on his feet, but anyways agree with you!!!

      franz.prade.9 - 2012-08-26 02:18

Always the Ref. Depends which side of the fence. Great game Lions under trying circumstances and outside politics

      timothy.vanas - 2012-08-26 06:50

Wrong Pal the ball came off Elton's hand and not Van den Heever's therefore 22 drop out and not 5 meter scrum. Get over it the lions won and wp lost.

  • lesbeen - 2012-08-26 11:22

Everybody is complaining about playing with a \b-team\? The Lions are missing 8 players through injury and a bok call-up themselves... So we are not playing with our first choice S15 team either... We showed the WP \a-team\ exactly what we can do with our \a-team\ in last year's Currie cup semi!!! If we had all our players available throughout the season, we probably wouldn't have ended last in the S15 too? But we have to except our fate, no use in trying piss against the wind, won't change a thing. Also doesn't change the fact that the Kings don't belong in SUPERRUGBY EITHER...

      rey.spies - 2012-08-26 11:47

      Well said.

      franz.prade.9 - 2012-08-26 21:14

Well said lesbeen Everybody forgets the fact that we struggled without players thru injury for the first part of the S15 When some of the players started coming back we actually turned it on and played good rugby again. We are still doing that and winning games. No stars but a lot of heart under trying cicumstances ie. EP Kings pathetic decision supported by all other franchises ???
