Lions No 9, manager in fracas

2012-08-23 20:16

Johannesburg - The Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) has handed down a final written warning to scrumhalf Whestley Moolman after an incident with team manager Mustapha Boomgard recently.

According to, an internal disciplinary hearing handed down the warning, along with a suspended sentence for nine months, to Moolman for an incident that happened in Boomgard’s office. An alleged argument broke out between the player and manager, whereafter Moolman allegedly grabbed Boomgard by his shirt and pushed him around.

Golden Lions acting CEO Ruben Moggee confirmed the incident and said “it was an internal matter which has been sorted out.”

Moolman’s agent Wim Meyer also confirmed the sentence and said his client would like to focus on getting back onto the rugby field.

Moolman is currently injured, and his contract at the Lions expires later this year.

What has happened to the respect between management and players. Very sad but it is indicative of the current situation in the Lions camp at present - frustration/ anger / dissaluionment

Golden Lions and the Lions are 2 separate entities. The Lions are a regional team that SHOULD consist of GL, Puma and Leopards players but (as in all the regional teams) the larger union hijacks the franchise and wants to run it because it all comes down to money. The regional team will be paid by SARU an amount for the players in the squad. The more players any union (or partner) have in the regional team, the more money they save on paying salaries. The money SARU pays them will comer most if not all of the players salary for the duration of the S15 thus they can contract more players. So the Lions have not really achieved anything but the Lions have won the CC.

Troubled times, the Lions are becoming extinct. This union is crashing fast!

I am inclined to agree with you. You look up the interview Darren Scott had with Dr Louis Lyut.

All SUPER rugby supporters: If they deservied to be there (with rugby results) we would respect them, but politics should not be in sport
