Lawrence to ref Cup final

2011-10-24 16:35

Johannesburg - Mark Lawrence will referee his second Currie Cup final when he takes charge of the match between the Golden Lions and the Sharks in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The 46-year-old Lawrence, who recently announced his retirement from officiating at international matches, refereed the 2007 Currie Cup final and the 2008 Super 14 Final.

"Mark has consistently been one of the best referees in South Africa, if not the world, and his appointment to the final is just reward for his superb performances," said Andr Watson, general manager of the SA Rugby Referees Association.

"The decision has not been easy as we are blessed with some very good referees who are capable of refereeing finals.

"The performances of Marius Jonker and Jaco Peyper in the semi-finals are testimony to this."

Lawrence will be assisted by Stefan Breytenbach and Christi du Preez. Marius Jonker is the reserve referee, while Johan Meuwesen takes on the job of television match official.

  • Kenjaymay - 2011-10-24 17:01

      Mark - 2011-10-24 18:00

The header of this article smells like a cheap and shameless attempt at riding the 'Lawrence' surname. Oooh! Must read!

      joeballito - 2011-10-24 17:23

Haha, you so right they caught me....

      Gungets - 2011-10-24 19:41

Quite right. There would have been at least 300,000 pairs of "natbroek" at the headline.

  • clivegoss - 2011-10-24 17:17

His name is MARK plse use that before his surname. The namesake is sad but true but then Mark is one hell of a referee. He should have been at the RWC as well.

  • Ryan - 2011-10-24 17:21

He is/was a eye care professional in Standerton and was my friends doctor. He said to my friend that he is a avid lions supporter. So .....

      Johan - 2011-10-24 18:03

That should make up for the Boks in the Sushi team lol!

      Riaan - 2011-10-25 11:29

Mark Lawrence refereed the Lions against Griquas at Coca Cola park during the group stages of this Currie Cup season. There were some highly controversial desicions, so much so that John Mitchell had a talk with him after the match, expressing his disgust on the how match was handled. I hope that it's not going to count against the Lions...

  • adrien.mcguire - 2011-10-24 17:41

Thank god, from the headline I was worried it was Bryce Lawrence. I am sure Mark will do a fine job. GO SHARKS !!!!

  • Sam - 2011-10-24 19:07

Excellent ref. Like all refs he is prone to the occasional mistake, but I can't remember him ever going out to nail a specific team in a match. He also gives good advantage, so we should see a good, flowing match where the ref don't try to be the centre of attention.

  • martin.gee.godfrey - 2011-10-24 19:30

Bet that headline got this page awhole host of visitors!! One way to get people to read your articles I suppose!

  • Hennie - 2011-10-24 19:37

Fantastic. Keep Marius (I don't see knock-ons) Jonker as far as possible from the final.

  • Barry - 2011-10-24 21:36

I thought it was Bryce...Thank the lord !!

  • Dianne - 2011-10-24 22:27

Ouch for a sec there thought it was bryce:) Mark Lawrence is 1000% better ref than his namesake. Go Sharks!

  • Facts - 2011-10-25 08:44

I rate Mark Lawrence higher than Craig Joubert. Craig blows for the home crowds in finals.

  • rondee.scherman - 2011-10-25 09:38

He is crap with too big an ego. Pretty boy with no personality - small Andre Watson in the making. Lets see if you publish this comment.

  • Sonja - 2011-10-25 10:33

I think Mark Lawrence is the sexiest ref, but not in this pic. Please replace the pic with a newer one. Now I will definately watch the rugby. Go Sharks and you sexy thing!

  • Skinfaxi - 2011-10-25 13:39

As a Sharks supporter I hoped for this. If they had appointed Jaco then they might as well just give the cup to the Lions and if they appointed Marius after Saturdays game they might as well just give the cup to the Sharks.
