Griquas hold WP to draw

2011-07-16 16:47

Cape Town - The untried Western Province combination had to settle for a 26-all draw against Griquas despite enjoying the upper hand for sustained passages of play in their Currie Cup match at Newlands on Saturday afternoon.

It was evident throughout the match that the Province players were battling to strike up cohesion although the never-say-die Griquas offered stout defence for most of the way to further complicate matters for the home side.

Province looked the likelier to score as their pack combined well with the backs in their early upfield surges, which inevitably broke down inside the Griquas 22-metre area. They were not always efficient at protecting the ball at the breakdown points and Griquas weighed in with fierce commitment to ensure three turn-overs in the first 18 minutes of play.

Their third turnover provided them with a platform to pounce for their opening try through leftwing Rocco Jansen who outpaced the Province cover defence.

Earlier, the flyhalves, Gary van Aswegen (WP) and Monty Dumond (Griquas, 2) had been on target with penalties and after converting Jansen's try the Kimberley visitors opened up a 13-3 lead.

Province enjoyed the lion's share of possession for the rest of the half and when scrumhalf Louis Schreuder dummied his marker, he sent in flanker Siya Kolisi for a try next to the posts.

Van Aswegen and Dumond each added another penalty ahead of the halftime break when the teams changed ends with a 16-all scoreline.

Province started the second half by coming close to a try when they suffered a telling setback. Griquas rightwing Richard Lawson turned the ball over virtually on his own tryline before setting off on a counter-attack down the grandstand touchline.

The Griquas support was up to the task as they relayed the ball upfield before Jansen dotted down under the posts for a converted try (23-16).

Province appeared to shake off the setback with ease as they wrested the initiative once again and on the hour outside centre Johann Sadie streaked through for the side's second try. Van Aswegen's conversion made for a 23-23 scoreline.

The flyhalves again exchanged penalties for a 26-26 stalemate, seven minutes from the end.

A minute later, Rohan Kitshoff, the Province substitute loosie, had a gilt-edged try-scoring chance but he lost the ball after Dumond fumbled a pass in his in-goal area.

It proved to be Province's final chance of winning the match.

      GraemeBB - 2011-07-16 21:33

  • Zion - 2011-07-16 16:58

This is one WP team which belongs in the palooka ranks. Griquas have won the cup once if I go back into the dim annals of history. circa '76. Yet griquas usually make an impressive start to the season then peter out to a damp squib. Hence it should be in order to categorise them as a palooka team.

      Bulldozer - 2011-07-16 17:01

      This coming from another palooka.

      Carl Muller - 2011-07-17 11:07

Griekwas took it from the Bulls then.... Bulls forever, and Griekwa gebore...

      BlouBos - 2011-07-17 19:28

Zion, it is so that Griquas always have an impressive start. But remember, baas Rassie is currently is such a shock after Saturdays performers het wil most likely buy up half the Griquas team during the season to strengthen the Southern Palookas and that is way the Griquas usually don’t make it to the end.

  • Mike@CapeT - 2011-07-16 17:10

The inexperience of the WP youngsters showed with some really bad decision making in the final 10 minutes. They can only learn from the experience and improve!

  • Garth Jordan - 2011-07-16 17:26

bulldozer, couldnt agree with you more, and the bulls are also going nerens.

  • Claude - 2011-07-16 17:32

Lame non-existent reporting on this match by Sports 24 - my 10 year old grandson could have done a better job. At least both teams have points which is more than I predict will happen in the Bulls / Sharks match.

  • Garth Jordan - 2011-07-16 17:37

    slaap die bulle vanaand?

      Bulldozer - 2011-07-16 18:43

      Speel hulle vanaand?

      GraemeBB - 2011-07-16 21:35

No, we going to shoot another zebra.

      Bulldozer - 2011-07-16 21:43

      Graeme, they'll probably miss.

  • Jan Steyn - 2011-07-16 18:08

news24 and Times carry the same article above. Cheapskates.

  • Andrew - 2011-07-16 18:17

The Blue Bulls are not exactly covering themselves in glory at this point. 4 tries to 0 is even worse than a draw.

      Andrew - 2011-07-16 18:41

Mike the venom? A simple statement of fact and reposte to Bulldozers opening post. I would suggest you carefully consider who you insult from behind the comfort of your PC. Get some help for your forum rage. Have no idea who you support but if it is either the Bulls or WP it would appear as if neither could they beat the blind on homeground ...... F&CK FACE.

      Mike@CapeT - 2011-07-16 18:58

Andrew, unfortunately, the comments made in bad taste are from the imposter who resides in Canada AKA Effels and plenty of other alias's.

      Andrew - 2011-07-16 19:05

Sorry Mike. New to the forums and have heard of the imposters but still don't know who the players are.

      Mike@CapeT - 2011-07-16 19:14

Apology accepted.....the real me is a true Stormer/WP supporter and would not trash the team as the imposter

      GraemeBB - 2011-07-16 21:37

This is a WP article, but as usual, they talk about the Bulls. Lets face it, besides Sadi, there aint much to talk about there in the southern most province.

      CliffB - 2011-07-17 06:11

Mike@CapeT : I know that as you (Wannabee) gave me crap on the Super 15 comments and I know you from a while back !!!

      Andy49 - 2011-07-17 20:48

@GraemeBB, I suggest you read the initial comments to see where the Bulls comments originated. I think your comment is a tad biased & incorrect

  • Garth Jordan - 2011-07-16 19:01

sharks were really good, wp and bulls not so hot but it is a long way to go. wp really need a flyhalf and some fowards. hope it gets better, tickets for bulls and sharks games. today at newlands was ----------.

  • apie - 2011-07-16 20:46

Too many quota players. Die, rugby, die.

      GraemeBB - 2011-07-16 21:38

      Net AAP

      ChumScrubber - 2011-07-16 21:53

They seem to score the most tries, so its a bit doff to blame them for bad performances. Always someone to blame, or what? South African habit.

  • Kleinboet - 2011-07-17 00:01

Well played, Griquas! My team played without vigour and it was clear that they need playing time together to gell into a unit. Could have been different if they took all the many chances that they had; but … they did not. Hope they will work hard this coming week and excell next Saturday. Remember, the Currie Cup is not won in July - not yet.

  • Magmansa - 2011-07-17 07:14

Can sum1 tell me how Sadie played? I was hoping he was gonna be in this Bokke "B" team.

      Mike@CapeT - 2011-07-17 07:53

      He played fireworks!

  • Kabous - 2011-07-17 07:58

Dit gaan 'n baie lang seisoen raak as ons so begin ...

  • ozwald - 2011-07-17 08:11

A very very young and inexperienced team, we are building for the super rugby competition. We won't win the Currie Cup- this team needs time to mature but make no mistake next year when injuries hit the stormers i will have no doubts about who our 3rd and 4th choice players are which leaves us in a very comfortable position, if these players can all hang around to a part of a great legacy at Province, our trophy cabinet will fill up.

  • The_Fox - 2011-07-17 10:26

Terrible performance from WP. Our tight 5 is a joke and Deon must really consider moving to a loose forward position as his lineout throws are pathetic to say the least. Sadie was average at best and looked as though he thought he was doing us a massive favour by playing in the blue and white hoops. Perhaps he should pack his bags and leave for Loftus before the next game. Gary showed some good touches but will probably be out for a while after getting injured. Again. Proudfoot: sort out the tight 5 or go find yourself another job.

  • jk - 2011-07-18 08:32

im gonna say it again, keep this team(we dont have others..), i like what i saw..
