Bloemfontein - According to Die Burger, the Cheetahs have welcomed former Springbok wing Tonderai Chavhanga back to their team for the 2013 Currie Cup season.

Chavhanga will become the second former Springbok to join up with the Cheetahs this season, after they announced prop Wian du Preez returned in June.

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske said Chavhanga's versatility - he can play at wing and at fullback - would increase the team's depth for their Currie Cup campiagn.

Chavhanga has played for the past few years for Welsh team Gwent Newport Dragons, but was plagued by injuries in the past couple of seasons.

The Zimbabwean-born speedster played his last season in South Africa in 2009 at the Stormers and Western Province, but started his career in the Cheetahs' age group ranks.

Chavhanga, 29, earned four Springbok Test caps between 2005-2008, and holds the South African record for the number of tries scored in one game, six, in his Springbok debut in their 134-3 thrashing of Uruguay in 2005.

"We are a bit thin in the wing position. There is also the chance that Raymond (Rhule) could be called up for the Springboks, and Tonderai can also cover at fullback if Hennie Daniller is injured," Drotske said.

With Willie le Roux and Nico Scheepers returning to the Griquas for the Currie Cup, Raymond Rhule and Rayno Benjamin are the only other wings at Drotske's disposal.
