Fleck impressed by Hollenbach

Cape Town - Western Province backline coach, Robbie Fleck, says he was not surprised when the Golden Lions picked Alwyn Hollenbach at inside centre at the expense of Springbok, Butch James, for their Currie Cup semi-final clash at Coca-Cola Park.

"It doesn't surprise me at all. Alwyn is the most underrated player in their group," Fleck told Die Burger newspaper.

"He executed 19 tackles when we took a hammering against them two weeks ago - it was the most of everyone in their team.

"The Lions also rely on Alwyn to give them go-forward momentum. An inside centre who manages that, puts his team on the front foot," said Fleck.

Fleck believes James has to compete with two of the best players in this year's Currie Cup for a place in the Lions' team - which makes it tough for him to make the starting line-up.

“Elton Jantjies is according to me the best attacking flyhalf in the series. And Alwyn is not only a good ball-carrier, but according to the statistics he's also a very good defender.

The former Bok centre reckons Hollenbach fits the description of a player you would want in a knockout-game.

“John Mitchell has been (as All Black-coach) in knockout-situations. "He knows defence and accuracy are of immense importance to achieve success. I think they will stick to their attacking approach and just make sure they are ready for us on defence."

Well, it shows that John Mitchel has no time for has-beens!

I like John's approach Taetjo, he realise talent when he sees it not sticking with old has beens. No disrespect to them but it's time to move on. I never like Butch anycase. To undisciplined.

Can the Cheetahs do a repeat performance of their hatchet job on the Crusaders and can WP recapture some of their best form from the S15? These are the factors that will determine the outcome of tomorrow's games. My money is on a Sharks Lions final, but that could change if WP and Cheetahs bring their A games tomorrow. Let's just hope that we don't get "man of the match" performances from the match officials.

I'm happy for the oke. I'm not a Lions fan, but I'm hoping they win this weekend. SA rugby can do with them being strong- and if they win with such youngsters, then great. In a few years we will have to replace Fourie, De Villiers, etc. Go Alwyn!

Actually Paulus we beat them 19–33 in the second conference game of the Super 15.

      jeffery.stokes - 2011-10-21 14:25

but Paulus wont accept that. because its not by 15. he has a point to prove. even though the biggest point here is that the lions have been beaten by WP with and without there super15 players.

Isak, Jed.. You guys Rock!!! ha ha... It is important that the Boks gel with the currie cup team, if they don't get momentum then the Lions will make it a long day... But if they do, sorry Lions, give way for the big boys. WP, djou lekke ding!!!!

      Jed - 2011-10-21 10:41

True Ignatius , I was hoping Duvie would be back at scrummie to lead Catrikillas, but if all goes well , with De Villiers outside him he will flourish. The boys got a good boot on him, and we all know what Elton Jantjies is like under pressure. Province by 15.....
