Elton's dad upset at Bok snub

2012-08-30 07:38

Cape Town - Thomas Jantjies, the father of Lions flyhalf Elton, told Beeld he doesn't understand why his son wasn't included in the Springbok touring party to Australasia.

Jantjies, 22, is yet to make his Test debut despite being in the Springbok squad on a few occasions. He was a member of the Bok squad for the series against England in June. In that series he was a replacement in the third Test in Port Elizabeth but wasn't utilised.

And on Wednesday he was excluded from the Bok touring party for the Rugby Championship games against Australia and New Zealand down under.

Twenty-year-old Cheetahs flyhalf Johan Goosen was picked ahead of Jantjies as Morné Steyn's deputy for the tour.

Jantjies Snr said it won't influence his son in a negative manner.

"He is positive and will work hard to earn a place. He says he's still going to play 100 Tests for South Africa and will perform until they pick him one day. That's the motivation he uses."

Jantjies last week steered the Lions to a 26-23 victory over Western Province in Johannesburg when he kicked seven penalties, one coming after the hooter to win the game.

And this week he's back at Coca-Cola Park when the Lions take on Griquas on Friday night. Kick-off is at 19:10.

So just to get things started here, and to get it all out the way right now 1. MS is not good enough and should go to Japan 2. HM is a fool/idiot/hardheaded/moron 3. Blame it on 8 9 10 15 or any other Bulls players 4. HM has Pink/Blue tinted glasses 5. Where is Heinrich Brussouw? 6. Duane Vermeuelen and Goosen should be in the squad 7. Duane and Goosen are not ready to be in the squad 8. Nick Mallet should be coach 9. There are players south of the Jukkskei 10. Elton Jantjes doesn't play for the Bulls so he cannot be selected, if you play for the Bulls you are guaranteed a jersey Missing anything?

      carl.miles.31 - 2012-08-30 07:53

      Haha spot on! Enough said...

      Yes................You're an idiot

      brilloks.bittergal - 2012-08-30 08:00

Elton should be in the squad but I feel Pieter Grant should be first choice. Morne should be playing in the Currie Cup until he is fit and proper. Another option would be to move Lamby to Fly Half and Aplon in Full back. We have so many choices for Fly Half yet we insist on making use of the one guy that is clearly not the right choice. (Die Hard Lion Supporter)

      raeez.omar.5 - 2012-08-30 08:07

100% CORRECT!!! Well said Macziekpk.I cant wait to hear what Jake White has to say about this Some of the WORLDS best players are left behind but hey atleast we'll have a Currie Cup full of talent this year.hahahahaha

      piet.leroux.754 - 2012-08-30 08:08

yip that somes it up... Macziekpk for SARU president

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-08-30 08:12

So true. All of your points. 1. Turnstile Steyn is not international standard. 2. Heineken has been left behind in time 3. Jano Vermaak is the only Bulls player to be there on merit 4. Heineken is blind, never mind pink glasses. 5. Injured 6. They are 7. They should have been there ages ago 8. YES!! 9. You will find rugby players only south of the Jukskei. 10. Why do you think Turnstile, Two-step Hougaard, Kirchner, Potgieter etc. are in the team. There is no way they would have been selected were they to play for other unions.

      press.enter.12 - 2012-08-30 08:14

You'r missing - the cape black caps insights. . . . 11. Heyneke Meyers is a racist 12. Bring Back PdV 13. Gio aplon is our best backline player

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-08-30 08:31

Is HM the second coming of Harry Viljoen, taking the Boks back in time lets say by 10 or 12 years? It looks like HM like almost all of our modern era coaches, seems to only wanna learn things doing them the hard way. HM currently have fans in a fanclub to keep him going, not supporters from the South African rugby public.Bulls fans loves him to bits,we Stormers couldn't give a toss about HM and the Sharks,well...they go beserk the moment he shows himself. The man should start to find the right combination in every department. How hard is that honestly? For the front row,we are ok once Bismarck is back, his brother Jannie is a walking penalty give away machine. In the Second row Andries Bekker, never delivers when it matters.Etzebeth, Kruger and Bresler are the ones that can be develop even more. In the Back row the issue is that our back row men aren't as match fit as they should be.Juan Smith at 8(when he is fit again),Brussouw at 6 and Schalk Burger at 7. Halfbacks.Hougaard box kicking is not working when compared to Fourie. A big headache in itself. Centers.Frans Steyn and Jean de Villiers do not play well together. That's because Jean is not and out and out outside center. We need to choose one and find a proper number 13.If HM wants Jean de Villiers to play at 13,then make Frans Steyn our fullback then. The Backline of JP Pietersen, Habana /Hougaard and Lambie/Steyn/ or anyone else but "nick-naks" man Zane Kirchner at fullback.

      john.comyn.18 - 2012-08-30 09:14

@ Sean All HM is really trying to do is pull the wool over everyone's eyes by appearing not to be bias. Here is what the real Bok side should look like: (note 1 Bull) 15- F Steyn 14- JP Pietersen 13- J Fourie 12- JDV 11- H Habana 10- P Grant 9- R Pienaar 8- D Vermeulen 7- W Alberts 6- S Burger / Brussouw 5- J Kruger 4- E Etzebeth 3- Beast 2- B Du plessis 1- C Oosthuizen (bench - whoever Meyer thinks is next best).

      jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-08-30 09:48

      What Ever Idiots!!!!!!!!! GO BOKKE!!!!!!!!!

      waseem.frieslaar - 2012-08-30 23:13

Well said. Honestly I feel the only way things will change is if the Bokke fail horribly in this years competition. Any selection if made on merit would be justified no matter what union he plays for, but HM selections cant be justified by recent performances. The only saving grace we have at the moment it isn't a WC year and we still have time to salvage the springbok team.

  • matthew.keegan.71 - 2012-08-30 07:52

I for one sympathise with Jantjies. While I agree Goosen is the future, I don't see him playing in this year's Rugby Championship (or at least he shouldn't). Furthermore, I don't see the "Gameplan" changing any time soon, so why persist with a flyhalf who can't seem to kick for poles anymore? Is that not what would (if at all) win us games? So why leave out someone who is kicking magnificently and would at least offer a little bit more than Morne Steyn in favour of someone who has just returned from injury with one rusty CC performance under his belt? I'm sorry to sound cynical, but it sounds like HM is panicking a little.

      Paddy - 2012-08-30 08:41

Matthew, I hope that you are not for one moment suggesting that there is actually a "gameplan"............

      grant.callaway.50 - 2012-08-30 10:56

By picking Goosen, who is young AND coming back from injury, there will be a lot of reasons to justify playing Steyn! If Lambie or Jantjes were backup flyhalves, and Steyn starts AGAIN, and our backline does nothing AGAIN, he wont have as many excuses. Steyn is now damaging the team!

      TravieGrif - 2012-08-30 11:11

Grant, can't we march or strike or something to get MSteyn out. If Goosen is not ready, use Lambie. He has had such a good season, but it spending his life bench warming, which is the biggest waste of talent and a crying shame. Just give him a chance, and if he fails (which we all know he won't, because we have seen what he did T 10 in the Sharks jersey, and at 15 for the Boks), then I will be the first in the "ressurect Morne" queue. Until we start attacking the 10 channel with flatter ball, and getting our line going from the advantage line and not 30m behind it, our loosies will be behind the 8-ball and will be criticised.

  • sergiodc - 2012-08-30 07:56

are you kidding me, there is 49mil reason, i play better than him

      grant.callaway.50 - 2012-08-30 10:57

Not likely guy! Elton would be the starting flyhalf for most international teams.

      TravieGrif - 2012-08-30 21:55

Not likely Grant. He has a great boot, but has the problem of freezing under pressure. How many times has he knocked the ball on when taking a pass on his goal line. I could be wrong, but I am not sure how many teams he would start for.

  • jako.merwe - 2012-08-30 07:57

We don't understand either uncle. Its perfectly clear that HM is slightly retarded though.

  • john.maree.90 - 2012-08-30 07:58

Because Johan is better that Elton!

      neddard.mcphearson - 2012-08-30 10:04

I agree that Johan is a better flyhalf...probably the best flyhalf in the country, but this is based on a single season with the Cheetahs, and he is now returning from injury too! Surely the logical approach would be to take an experienced and in-form Jantjies(or Grant for that matter), and allow Goosen to recover and grow until we can fully utilise him with confidence.

      TravieGrif - 2012-08-30 21:57

He is not using Lambie, who has more experience and has been playing better for longer, so why would he chose Jantjies? I wouldn't moan if he replaced Morne with my granny, but I don't see him dropping Morne in the near future. Sadly.

  • marlin.samuels.1 - 2012-08-30 08:15

      martin.willemse.10 - 2012-08-30 08:57

If he played for any other team except the Lions he would've been picked!!! Lions franchise is his drawback!!

  • marlin.samuels.1 - 2012-08-30 08:19

The proteas cricket team is number 1 in test cricket and they achieved it with half of the team being non-white, they beat ENGLAND in the limited over game with half of the team being non-white, the intervention of quota players made good for the sport in general. Boks need to give more non-white players a chance who is better than their counterparts. But having a racist mentality is going to cost HMeyer

      dieter.muller.942145 - 2012-08-30 08:42

marlin - ja gaan kyk maar sokker asb! bokke!!!!

      gavin.vandermerwe.39 - 2012-08-30 09:17

@ marlin.samuels.1 There are no "quota players" in the Protea squad. Hashim is a legend in the making, Philander and Tsotsobe are excellent bowlers, Pietersen is a solid top order batsman, as is JP Duminy. None of these players can be considered as quotas. Stop being an idiot.

      Stormkaap - 2012-08-30 10:41

Gavin, not so long ago it was said, on this forum, that Amla is a quota player. Philander at best is a provincial player and Duminy doesnt deserve to be in the squad. So all that Marlin is doing is repeating what has been said by bloggers on this website. What one must remeber is that any player must be given fair opportunity to prove their mettle. Wynand Olivier had 35 times with 1 test try. JDJ 10 times and 3 tries and gets dropped. Spies 4 yrs and 50 tests and still is useless. Daniel 1 test and gets dropped for a headless chicken in Potgieter. M Steyn has been terrible for a good part of last year and all of this year. So why did HM not play Lambie off the bench or for that matter give Jantjies an opportunity. Frankly, if one looks toward 2015 WC, Steyn will not be the flyhalf and that position more than likely come from Goosen, Jantjies or Pollard with Lambie an outsider. So why not give them an opportunity. As for Hougaard, i think HM is dumb expecting him to play like FDP, cause they are completely different players.

      lindy.leroux - 2012-08-30 12:16

Stormskaap, you just proved Gavins point indirectly, nothing that you stated is based on Race (except maybe Jantjies because his black, but we all know that that is not the reason for Meyer not selecting him), so why is the race card pulled again by Marlin, Just because other bloggers used it years ago, it doesn't mean he's got to use it now, we are all unhappy about Steyn but we do not use the race card for every black player that is in the side in place of a better white players (Kirchner/Lambie) " J "

      Stormkaap - 2012-08-30 12:50

Lindy, how many times have you read that when a player of color has a bad game, he is a quota player. How quickly is players of color dispensed with. And how often do they not get an opportunity to prove themselves. Not so skaap afterall.

      andrew.miles.98622733 - 2012-08-30 17:36

marlin.samuels.1 So cork the bubbly, p.s in maths half a cricket team is 5.5(just saying).Your statement regarding the above regarding cricket above shows the racist around. So marlin, select your non-whites in the place of others and give the reasoning. Unless I'm colour blind we have good non-whites in the bok team already and on merrit. Where are the millions of non whites that need the chance? Under mr pieter your friend we had less black development of boks and then he nogal blamed the whities at the unions. And give more than one player please, I don't rate a lot of white players in the bok team and so what, I live with it. Another piece of maths. In your view half the cricket team is non-white, so that makes 27.3%. 4 out of 15 boks where non-white which makes it 26.67%, which if rounded both are at 27%. So actually the boks are also half non-white.

  • ChrisinOz294 - 2012-08-30 08:19

Chaplincharlie will probably inform us soon that MS passed the ball 23 times last Saturday. Elton's dad is rightfully upset. I'm sure Elton can pass the ball 23 times as well. If that is the criteria to be a Heineken-Bok flyhalf, then, hey!, I'm upset too. Why am I not picked? I can pass the ball 23 times. I'll even pass it 24 times if Heineken asks me to.

Grant is by far the best 10 in SA and should be there but do you hear his family me a favor and grow a pair please!!!! When you good enough and the whole country know and back you then start moaning and be upset.....Goosen is also good future talent but how can you pick someone that has been out for sooo long and only had 40mins game time??? HM is a complete idiot! People do not realise that he was the best coach when his players performed at the Bulls (he didnt really do much) the last few seasons when thing went sour for the Bulls...where was his awesome coaching skills???

      TruetotheBlue - 2012-08-30 11:04

Heyneke wasn't coaching the Bulls the last few seasons you twit, Ludeke was! Peter Grant collapses under pressure - surely you can still remember the Stormers v Sharks semi-final where Grant fell apart and could barely catch the ball?

      andrew.miles.98622733 - 2012-08-30 18:05

What do you mean sour? 2011 was a shocking start which happens to even the cruisaders and 2012 reached the play-off s after dropping some sitter games due to being new unit. Again sour??

  • nkwe.mahlanghu - 2012-08-30 08:22

Heyneke had the luck of being the coach of a group of legendary players. The same legendary players gave Frans Ludeke a few Curries and 2 Supers. We all know that Ludeke can't coach. If you dont believe me go for brunch at Trademarks next to Loftus and see who does what. They way Heyneke reacts and speaks shows you he is out of his depth. He reminds me of the Strauelli era where he didn'y know who to pick or what to do with the embarresment of riches, Ai jai jai what now? Nick Mallet next year?

To be quite honest, Johan Goossen is a really good natural fly half. Jantjies is GOOD, but lets face it, Goossen IS better. Maybe if Jantjies just hold on another bit he will get a chance.

      bfvillet - 2012-08-30 08:56

Johan goosen played a few super rugby games but somehow he is the best has not played against any strong opposition but is rated above players who have faced sterner tests, when jantjies played against goosen i remember Jantjies kicking the lions to victory.I also want to remind you about his performance against wp on saterday. The belief that is placed in goosen reminds me of the messiah like abilities attributed to HM.Lambie and Jantjies should be playing ahead of Goosen.

  • roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-08-30 08:35

To anyone out there, this is not about "colour" but because Meyer the coach, wants to keep as many Bulls in the team. Peter Grant would also have been a very good choice but we are "saddled" with Morne Steyn who is going to lose us the games between Australia & New Zealand.

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-08-30 11:09

Hugo this passed weekend Elton was the one player who didn't miss tackles on a barging Duane Vermeulan! He can tackle. His problem may be his size, we know that HM is looking for the "big boys"

      Stormkaap - 2012-08-30 12:54

I am a Stormer supporter, but Grant does not make the cut for me. Apart from his goal kickicking within 40m he is great, but has been slow to send his backs away with space to run at the opposition. In the crunch games he has failed, a few times. I would play Jantjies ahead of him everytime. And several other players @ super rugby as well.

i dont blame him, the young man is on form at the moment and yes goosen is a good flyhalf but elton has had more play time and can not only kick but get a backline going as well... i dnt understand the thinking of HM .... he is makin a mockery of the springbok jersey and then has the nerve do defend his stupid decisions...

  • jacques.duplessis.3785 - 2012-08-30 09:40

Keep playing for the lions,u lucky to even be there!\r\n\r\ I don't think so

  • bomb.technician.5 - 2012-08-30 10:40

its about scoring points.......elton is deadly accurate, but his range is very short. Johan is deadly accurate, and can kick it miles.....who would you choose?

      bomb.technician.5 - 2012-08-30 10:43

and just by the way.....PGrant should have been selected even before JGoosen.

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-08-30 11:34

You have got to be kidding! "elton is deadly accurate, but his range is very short" - then you mention that Peter Grant is better than Goosen! In what world do you have Grant out-kicking Elton in accuracy or distance? The first kick Elton turned down on Saturday was on the touchline, on the halfway line! A kick early on from wide on the ten yard line was goaled with distance to spare. That is much further than Grant had the courage to attempt all through the Super 15. Whatever you are drinking, stop...

      Stormkaap - 2012-08-30 12:55

And Grants range is even shorter

  • BuddyCuddles - 2012-08-30 11:14

because he is average ... and should never even be considered !!!

  • BuddyCuddles - 2012-08-30 11:17

in order to win .. lets try this - Bring back Jake White or Mallett - Move Hougie to the bench to come on as impact - pick Sarel at 9 with Ruan on Bench - move Steyn to Bench and replace with Goosen - Lambie to 15 - JDV, JPP, JDJ, FS, Habana to make up the rest ..

      nkwe.mahlanghu - 2012-08-30 11:54

      Whatever you are drinking, stop......................

  • hugh.olphart - 2012-08-30 13:02

Is this where I say "I told you so"?

  • jacobus.vandermerwe.9 - 2012-08-30 15:01

Elton should do a Kevin Peterson and go play in Englang/Australia/Anywhere else... He is brilliant on attack, defence and can kick any penalty inside the other team's half. The only thing he cannot do is kick 60m... Which is only required in the bok's current game plan...

  • douglas.toit - 2012-08-30 16:36

He will be spared from being humiliated by the All Blacks. Proudly South African All Black

  • EISHMAN - 2012-08-30 17:36

If you don't play the bulls style of rugby, you OUT, ask Pat Lambie, ask Elton Jantjies, ask Peter Grant, ask Henrich Brussow, so how many more should we ask, what a crap fullback is Zane, oh yes, he plays bulls rugby, the Ab's are going to give us 30 points if we play this type of rugby

  • faroukg2 - 2012-08-30 19:07

his brother stands a better chance then him...

  • raditshaba.mahasha - 2012-08-30 22:03

i am worried about the selection criteria that is been used in SA rugby. when Lambie was selected nothing was said about his age. Siya Kolisi played very well for the Stomers during the Super Rugby and when he was supposed to be selected. he was told that he is too young. Goosen was recently selected and how old is he? Now is Jantjies. i wonder what is the excuse now.

  • raymond.dick.12 - 2012-08-30 22:10

He was not included because he is kuk

  • chris.booise - 2012-08-30 23:38

If I was Elton's dad I would have been glad that my son was not picked. Why would I want my son to be part of a team that is going to be humiliated by the All Blacks and by the weak Wallabies.

  • brionyl.french - 2012-08-31 05:48

Elton was robbed and thats all i can say.. He is brilliant and soon they will beg him to play, he should decline...SARU sucks!!! look what they did to the Lions franchise....

  • grant.butler.104 - 2012-08-31 06:39

What I would like clarity from HM on is where does he see Lambie in terms of a position, 10 or 15 ? If 15 then Jantjes and Goosen would / should be the 2 x flyhalves the Boks embrace going forward. If 10 then a straight shoot out between Lambie and Jantjes for the other 10 spot, because Goosen is a very rare talent in my opinion and should be the Bok 10 as soon as he regains full form and fitness. The problem is M Steyn, he is the fly in the ointment for Boks....Time for change at Bok 10....and the sooner the better...

  • terencebrian.martin - 2012-08-31 08:01

coach it the moment let’s hope he finds his bearings, team is not working well together, combinations my ass if that was the case we would see a mostly blue bulls back row sharks front row, Stormers in the line outs (true to some degree already) and the rest of the team on the bench from the other provinces, play the best players in their respected oh yes get rid of Steyn guy is out of form needs some Currie Cup time to find his ability once again , another thing Eltons dad should rather be quite i would have hated if my mommy cried to my coach and all the other parents if i was left out , shame poor boy you probly his manager

  • roelfensusanne.mare - 2012-09-01 10:44

Do we have a second Luke Watson on our hands! Daddy wants his little boy in the big team! Please play yor game and learn as much as you can and maybe you will be lucky to join the team you already did so dont be a little spoilt brat and throw a tantrum! Dont politisize the issue we dont need that on the sport arena.
