Catrakilis heading back to WP

Cape Town - Demetri Catrakilis is heading back to Cape Town to play for Western Province in this year’s Currie Cup, a report on Die Burger’s website indicates.

The Kings No 10’s dad confirmed that his son has been allowed to play his Currie Cup rugby outside of Eastern Province.

“Demetri told me that Alan Solomons (Kings director of coaching) gave him permission to play his rugby elsewhere on a loan basis,” George Catrakilis said on Thursday.

Western Province are reportedly at an advanced stage of negotiating the deal which will see Catrakilis return to play in the Currie Cup Premier Division, while the EP Kings are slugging it out in the low-key First Division.

He was WP’s hero in the Currie Cup final last year when they upset the Sharks 25-18 in Durban.

Catrakilis’ long-term future could be influenced by what happens in the Kings’ upcoming Super Rugby promotion-relegation tussle against the Lions.

He is contracted for one more season at the Eastern Cape franchise, but has an exit clause if the Kings are not part of Super Rugby.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
