Confident WP to take on Lions

2012-10-14 13:19

Cape Town - The Springbok-laden Western Province team will be taking loads of confidence to Johannesburg for next weekend's Currie Cup semi-final following their impressive 36-15 victory over the Free State Cheetahs at Newlands on Saturday.

WP coach Allister Coetzee was particularly stoked by his team's performance at the set-pieces and he felt it was incumbent on his players to build on that display against the 2011 champions, the Golden Lions next Saturday.

"I liked the way we physically dominated the scrum, and the tackle," said Coetzee.

"It is important to go into the semis confident about our set-piece.

"It was a very workmanlike performance and it is how we want to perform as a team."

Coetzee said that while the side's returning Springbok players made a massive impact in their victory it was an all-round good performance by the team.

"It was great to see how the (returning) Boks fitted in because it is something that we had to be sure of," he said.

"We've been playing for a while with different players but this was almost like a Super 15 group so it was important that we came up with a sound performance.

"The Boks added great value across the board and also the rest of the team played their part. It was not a case of letting the Boks do the hard work and the rest sitting back."

WP captain Jean de Villiers praised the players' efforts but added that the performance was not necessarily a memorable one.

"It was a good performance but not one that will be remembered for years to come," said De Villiers.

"It would be good for the young players who gave this team a chance to reach the semis that we go further in the competition.

"They will feel part a sense of achievement and it will be good for the future of Province rugby."

The match result doomed the Cheetahs to relegation/promotion playoffs against First Division champions, the Eastern Province Kings, starting next week.

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské, clearly dejected, was also concerned about the plight of his prop, Springbok Coenie Oosthuizen, who was forced to leave the field injured in the first half.

"I told the players after the match that if they cannot beat the Kings in the playoffs, they don't deserve to be playing (Premier Division) Currie Cup next year," said Drotské.

"Looking back this season there were matches that we should have won and now those missed opportunities have landed us where we are now.

"This (defeat) is what happens when you're defending for 50 or 60 minutes in a match, but credit to WP, their defence was awesome."

Drotské did not want to comment on Oosthuizen's injury except he suggest that it was a back injury rather than the troublesome neck which threatened to curtail his career in the past.

WP to be taken home in St Johns ambulances

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-14 14:02

Warren, the same thing that happened last year.

      jed.vonallemann - 2012-10-14 14:19

Province by 50 , then to hammer whoever's in the final by at least 30. Province have no competition this season, the only way they lose is by poor ref's.

      macziekpk - 2012-10-14 14:22

      Please remind us what happened

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-14 14:25

Like the last 11 years, Vallem?

      jed.vonallemann - 2012-10-14 14:37

Well the Bull's made the play-offs so anything's possible.

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-14 14:51

The Bulls have been in the playoffs about 95% of the time over the last 11 years, but it hasn't helped you lot much.

      kaptein.spies - 2012-10-14 16:45

@jed von allemann What happened to you yesterday fatboy? You reckoned Bulls to play promotion-R and then what happened? You said any question/medical can be googled, I fired you one and you ran! Little embarrassed today?

      jed.vonallemann - 2012-10-14 18:05

Spies, I answered go check. Oh Congrats on scraping past the Lions C team. Thank you Lions.

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-14 23:59

      macziekpk - 2012-10-14 13:34

THanks for that, next you will say this will be a game of two halves

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-14 13:36

A lot of your players also go both ways.

      gswart1 - 2012-10-14 16:22

As does your beloved meisiekind(wynand). Don't really care what anybodys sexual orientation is. But I promise you that any Province player will give you a snotklap and its lights out for you. You will wake up a week later from a little coma. Hahahaha bulls the future chokers of world rugby.

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-14 16:26

Baie oorspronklik Gerhard. Is dit jou eie materiaal?

      gswart1 - 2012-10-14 16:36

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-14 17:04

Gerhard, you killing me. Jy is n regular Trevor Hilton en Barry Noah.

    Kaplan helped with the scrums

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-14 13:49

It was shocking to say the least. Ginger's hands were more on the ground than his feet, yet the Cheetahs were blown up all the time.

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-15 00:02

Blame the ref. You must be Bulls supporters.

It looks like a final by the sea!

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-14 14:03

There's no sea at Ellispark, unless you are talking about Wild Waters in Boksburg.

      gswart1 - 2012-10-14 16:11

Yes a final by the sea. But the cup will come back to the western shores where it belongs.

      BlouMasjien1 - 2012-10-14 16:24

@spyker, don't forget, the Valley of the Waves!

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-14 16:26

Like the last 11 years. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-14 17:05

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-15 00:04

@gswart. Yes, the cup is coming home at last.

WP eindig hierdie jaar hul choke streak. Hahahaha! WP jou lekker ding!

      gswart1 - 2012-10-14 16:25

Moet nou nie suurgat wees omdat julle soms in pienk truitjies moet speel nie. Embrace the pink! Almal klomp poefters in daai span van julle. Hahahaha!

      kaptein.spies - 2012-10-14 17:01

      gswart1 - 2012-10-14 17:14

@kaptein.spies. Jy se mos jy is n orthopedic surgeon. Nou kom ons toets jou bietjie. Ek het n paar jaar terug n ligament in my hand mors af geskeur met n rugby besering. Die ligament is presies tussen waar die radius by die karpus heg en waar die duim metakarpus by die karpus heg. Hulle het my hand weer heel gemaak. My vraag aan jou is wat sal jy presies doen as jy op my hand moet opereer om dit weer heel te maak? Ek wag in spanning vir jou antwoord

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-14 17:21

Dis maklik Gerhard. Sit n pen in. (Ek kyk Binnelanders.)

      gswart1 - 2012-10-14 17:29

Nee spyker jy sit nie n pen in nie. Ek het nie my hand gebreek nie. Net die ligament afgeskeur. Probeer weer.

Duh.

  • tian.nel.18 - 2012-10-14 18:06 wp is confident taking on the lions only reason why they confident is not because of their performance against the cheetahs but rather the performance of the lions against the bulls.
