Cheetahs win at Newlands

2011-09-24 18:58

Cape Town - Western Province were floored by a first-half try spree by the Free State Cheetahs who ran out eventual 34-20 bonus-point winners in the Currie Cup match at Newlands on Saturday evening.

Province rallied fiercely in the dying stages, but the 24-6 half-time deficit proved a touch too much, especially after replacement Sias Ebersohn snapped over a drop goal nine minutes from the end to stretch the lead to seven points.

And when desperation set in, the hosts conceded a try at the end when prop Coenie Oosthuizen barged over for a converted try.

The Cheetahs made their intentions clear at the outset as they ran at the Province defence at every opportunity.

Province's defence, considered among the best in the competition, were tested relentlessly in the opening half and by the time the half-time whistle sounded the visitors had run in three converted tries.

The home team initially looked like they could see off the threat but there was so much variation and pace in the visitors' attacks that it proved too difficult to contain.

Cheetahs halfbacks Johan Goosen (flyhalf) and Piet van Zyl (scrumhalf) were causing problems with sniping runs around the fringes.

After Goosen landed an eighth minute penalty, the Cheetahs backline brought off an intercept which allowed left wing Cameron Jacobs to dot down for the first try of the match. Goosen's conversion gave the visitors a 10-0 lead.

There were further woes for province three minutes later when Van Zyl rounded off a counter-attack, which the Cheetahs sprung from deep inside their 22-metre area, Goosen added the extra two points.

Province finally managed to wrest the initiative and their efforts on attack over a 10-minute period were worth at least two tries, but they couldn't finish a host of promising moves and came away with two Lionel Cronje penalties instead, closing the gap to 17-6 just on the half-hour mark.

The six-point setback was quickly absorbed by the Cheetahs and they applied sustained pressure for the rest of the stanza.

Their lone reward was a try by loosie Pieter Labuschagne and a Goosen conversion (24-6) ahead of the break.

When Province returned in the second period, they turned the match on its head with a vastly improved performance upfront and scored twice in the opening 14 minutes of second-half play.

First captain Tiaan Libenberg dived over after a rolling maul and then replacement Deon Fourie scored in similar fashion seven minutes later.

Cronje's conversion attempts were on target and the deficit was reduced to four points.

Just as the match was approaching the hour mark, however, Province suffered a massive setback when their talisman eighthman, Nick Koster, was stretchered off the field.

The hosts had enough possession to continue their ascendancy, but handling errors and poor options brought a premature end to several promising moves in the Cheetahs' 22-metre area.

The visitors retaliated with counter attacks but they seldom managed to transfer play beyond the Province 10-metre line.

Both teams had scoring chances in the latter stages, but just as the match looked to be closing at 27-20, prop Coenie Oosthuizen barged over in the final minutes and Ebersohn's conversion landed the final blow.

Western Province:

Tries: Nick Fenton-Wells, Deon Fourie
Conversions: Lionel Cronje (2)
Penalties: Cronje (2)

Free State Cheetahs:
Tries: Cameron Jacobs, Piet van Zyl, Pieter Labuschagne, Coenie Oosthuizen
Conversions: Johan Goosen (3), Sias Ebersohn
Penalty: Goosen
Drop goal: Ebersohn

    Great Cheetahs!!!

      Stoutgat - 2011-09-24 19:11

Bwa-ha-ha! So much for the Wie-Pie papsakke this season. Again. Cup-less again, like for the past decade plus. Every time their supporters think that after 2 good games early in the season the cup is theirs, but every season ends up in tears, more missing front teeth and drowning their sorrows in their papsakke, but with no cup at Newlands. Vrystaaaaat!!!

      722 - 2011-09-24 19:24

Newlands is like homeground for the Cheeta boys. The ref tride to help in the second have but I think WP paid him not that mutch during the brake. Cheeetaaaaatsss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Warren - 2011-09-24 23:06

Watch carefully, next year the Cheetahs will be without a team again... a quarter of the team is off to the bulls, another quarter is off to Province & what's left over will be taken by the Sharks. Same old story... different year!!!

      thozi - 2011-09-24 23:17

      Way to go Cheetahs!!!

      Met - 2011-09-25 10:46

Warren- you have your wires crossed. The Cheetahs, with a good sponsor in place, is a lot more able to retain their players. Brussouw is a good example. He was chased by clubs around the world, incl WP, but he stayed. All the core players at the Cheetahs, have committed themselves for the next 2-3 yrs

      Cynix - 2011-09-25 16:52

You know what is so lekke - the Cheetahs enjoy their rugby, they develop youngsters and take on board players of colour from small unions and turn them into stars. It apparently iritates certain people to complain about referees - but all I can say yesterday the poor guy tried his best in the second half, even ignoring a red card trample by a WP guy - something worth 4 to 6 game suspension and then neglects to say 'advantage over' - Plonker you have beem de-throned.

      Jou - 2011-09-26 09:43

@Warren, if you dont know what you are talking about then keep quiet, the cheetahs have got these players signed for the next 3 years - BRUSSOW, Coenie, WP Nel, Marcel VDM, Andries Strauss, Adriaan Strauss, Juan Smith, Eberson twins, Sarel Pretorious (Currie Cup only) Johan Goosen, Riaan Smit, Benjamin, Ashley Johnson, Hennie Daniller.. Have i missed any? Plus all the youngsters coming through like Boom, Wessels, Lappies, etc

  • Brannas - 2011-09-24 19:11

Bhahaha, The downward spiral for the WeePee is well in efect now, Well done cheetahs, to get a bonus point with all the help the ref gave the weepee shows character,

      Sheriffff - 2011-09-24 19:14

I wouldn't exactly call it "the downward spiral" boet . . . . . WP are still well in the running fo a home semi, but yes good away win for cheetahs

      AMS-Dammer - 2011-09-24 19:25

Looks like the WEEPEE team lost their way a bit then... Shame...I feel for the LOSERS... Looks like they will be meeting the SHARKS in Durban in the semi's...

      Scaramouche - 2011-09-24 20:59

And there was a LOT of help!!! I was noit sure if the ref even had two arms!!!

      John Douglas - 2011-09-25 08:22

Sheriffff, the Bulls are 4 points behind WP. If all goes well they should get 14 points in their next 3 games. WP has a game against Pumas I think, Sharks away and Lions away. They'll be lucky to get 9 points to stay ahead of the Bulls. In other words, WP to miss out on the semi's.

  • BTRX - 2011-09-24 19:15

Fire Stewart Berry!!!!!

      Warren - 2011-09-24 20:21

I watched the last 10 minutes of the game again on my PVR decoder & the refereeing decisions were nothing short of shocking. Steward Berry's decisions weren't wrong, they were to give Province an advantage. Who the hell let this guy take charge???

      Durasmart - 2011-09-24 21:09

Not just Stewart Berry. Refs tried to influence 3 games this weekend, but only succeeded in one and that was in the Boland /Kings game on Friday when between Marius Jonker and the one assistant ref, the Kings received 3 yellow cards. The 2 yellow cards for the Bulls also nearly did the trick for the Lions and the 15 against 1 penalties nearly did it for WP too.

      Blouste-Blou - 2011-09-26 10:28

  • jontheb - 2011-09-24 19:16

Hearties Province. Looks like neither the Bulls or WP are gonna achieve much in this CC...hold your heads high boys...your senior players are doing the country proud! Aside from Brussouw, are there any other Cheetahs deemed good enough to don the green n gold? Methinks not!

      Carl Muller - 2011-09-24 19:19

Die Bulls is in die finaal....... Ek hoop julle is daar....

      BTRX - 2011-09-24 19:33

      FM150 - 2011-09-24 21:00

@jontheb, yip money gets you places hey. Wonder how many of those boytjies playin in NZ played there school boy rugby in the Free-State or made there names playing for the Cheetahs. Current squad- Jannie, Bismarck, CJ, Brucy, Guthro, Morne Steyn, Frans Steyn, Ruan. . . and i believe the rest of those boks was also potched. . so that leaves you with. . . three guys? JdV, Schalk and de Jongh. . . . yip "the muscle" of the team!

      AbsoluteZero - 2011-09-25 14:46

@jontheb, as FM150 has pointed out, if the Cheetahs players were not continuously poached by WP, the Bulls and the Sharks, then a lot more of the Bokke would be current Cheetahs. That said, Juan Smith would have been there if not for injury, and possibly Andries Strauss too, while Adriaan Strauss is a better hooker than the fat boy and Ashley Johnson is certainly better than Pierre "can'n tackle" Spies. Sias Ebersohn had a great super 15, and was being touted as a potential Bok, so in the Bulls game, I was surprised to see Goosen keep him on the bench. But he has been a revelation since, against the Bull, Sharks and WP. Not only can the boy kick, but he reads the game with maturity beyond his years, gets the backline away, breaks the line, tackles and is good under the high ball. If he is managed right (which may mean resisting the temptation to throw him into Super Rugby too early), then he could be awesome in the next two world cups.

  • acsnr - 2011-09-24 19:22

Smaak my die WP sukkel bietjie?

      AMS-Dammer - 2011-09-24 19:27

Sukkel BAIE! Ek dink hulle is vol KAAAK.... hardluiwig!

  • John Douglas - 2011-09-24 19:23

Wheels coming off. We are all used to it by now.

  • Kaapie - 2011-09-24 19:34

What a pathetic performance by WP. However, AC and his sidekicks are nothing but stupid. You continue to use two captains, start with a 2nd rate loose forwards in Fenton Wells and Daniller and Duvenage is a a real scrummies shadow. Or is he a Flyhalf. Sadie only passes when the person outside of him is in a worse position than what he is. What a pisspoor performance!! Oh by the way good luck to the bulls, you deserve the victory and the Cheetahs played good rugby and have a great flyhalf.. To province you lost the battle for the CC, rather than some teams winning it through poor coaching decisions

      24browser - 2011-09-24 21:40

agree!! Coaching staff has to take responsibilty! their team selection and substitutions are poor. what did you make of cronje's performance?

      Kaapie - 2011-09-25 13:25

Watched only some of the game before I got fedup. I believe that a player has to be given a fair opportunity to show his worth. Understand he came off because of an injury? Even so he didnt have a great game but neither a poor one.

  • andries.kloppers - 2011-09-24 19:37

WP jou lekka ding selfs die ref wat man of the match was kon julle nie red nie. En moet tog asseblief nie kla oor julle sogenaamde bokke wat by die world cup is nie. As ek reg onthou is dit net Jean De Villiers, en Francois Steyn speel better as hy wat ook by regte n Cheetah was. Of dalk Fourie wat n lion was. Of dalk Flo gespel VLOU. Aplon is n grap. Brian BLue bull Habana ex Lion. Shame.

      Kaapie - 2011-09-25 17:41

      Jys 'n idioot andries

  • Scaramouche - 2011-09-24 20:47

Was great at Newlands today, but the Cheetahs lost the plot in the second half - they should have won comfertably! But a series of penalties to WP (Cheetahs got awarded 1 penalty in the whole of the 2nd half!!), kept them on the backfoot. Still, great entertaining match and Cheetahs worthwhile winners!!

  • 24browser - 2011-09-24 21:31

Coach = Stupid Replaces his only kicker yet again for the 2nd week in a row. and it cost WP.also the captain made some seriously immature calls(a number of penalties couldve been taken for poles in the first half, their was more than enough time left) Kolisi and Carr should definetly start next week. Week in and week out they making an impact on attack...Daniller and wells are not doing it for me!! WP has some serious work to do if they wana qualify for the semi's. AC make things right!! you should take responsiblilty, no excuses!!! ps.cronje kicks the ball too much lol

  • Blou - 2011-09-24 22:08

Geluk Cheetahs.....!!!

  • Kleinboet - 2011-09-25 01:02

Geluk. Vrystaat. Vandag was julle te goed vir ons. Ons vat die pak soos 'n man.

      CliffB - 2011-09-26 06:26

So nou wat nou? lol

      CliffB - 2011-09-27 06:41

BlueRaven: Nou praat jy soos 99% van flou nul ondersteuners stront - Ek is die een WP ondersteuner wat nog nooit so gese het - Nog altyd "ONE GAME AT A TIME" So praat jou stront op n ander plek ASB

  • Claude - 2011-09-25 06:44

Poor decision making and reckless passing is the problem.

  • ChumScrubber - 2011-09-25 07:39

Cheetahs look the best team in the comp at the moment. At least now the 50 point klap they gave us feels better, to beat WP comprehensively like this at Newlands tells the true story of how good they are at the moment. Sharks and Lions seem a bit off the boil at the moment, and the Bulls have woken up. Don't right them off yet either.

  • Northern Stormer - 2011-09-25 08:49

      Vickers - 2011-09-25 09:31

Hier is n man wie se mening mens kan respekteer. Ek haal my Lions hoed af vir jou. Wens alle WP ondersteuners was so nugter. Go LIONS!

      Damian@bulls - 2011-09-26 07:53

      Storm Bru - 2011-09-25 09:56

  • Storm Bru - 2011-09-25 09:44

As an avid WP/Stormer supporter it was ony one team last night and that was the Cheetahs. They deserved to win and played the more attractive rugby. WP have really talented young players and their inexperience showed. They played well to comeback and at least showed some spirit. However, in saying that the fault lies firmly with Alistair and Fleck. There is no game plan and the defence is pathetic. Don't blame injuries as the new players are talented enough. Its a fact that both coaches have won nothing as players and should not be the coaches. How can you coach a winning team if you have never won anything important. WP need to get Gert Smal back from Ireland and Pieter Rossouw back from the bulls. Both Province players who achieved something and who can instill that passion back into the side. I just felt that WP played with no passion or idea - bunch of chickens running around with their heads cut off for the first half.

      lourensv1 - 2011-09-25 10:01

LOL, tiepies wp, sore LOOSER. Jy tik so mooi looser comment maar comment so looseragtig op myne. Smuck.

      Sporter - 2011-09-26 12:34

You can have Pieter Rossouw. He hasn't achieved ANYTHING with the Bulls backline!

  • Whoosa - 2011-09-25 17:14

In my view there is serious problems in the coaching deparment at newlands. Province look like a bunch of headless chickens.Tiaan Lieb is not a captians ass. How is there no place for Kolisi in the starting line up??? Why is Nic Koster all of a sudden turned into crash ball machine, not even trying to beat the man by stepping as he did earlier in the year? What happend to Dewald Duwenhage who was arguibly the best 9 in the S15? I'm not a province fan, but f#ck, there's so much talent in that squad, how is it possible to look so k#k. I predict another 10 years without cups.....

  • BulvanBulle - 2011-09-26 01:24

BHA BHA BHA BHAWHAH AH AH HA HA HA HA From 2nd on the log to 4th in 1 weekend. AND BEST OF ALL: 5th next weekend, bye bye semi-finals, hello 11 yr cupless Suck it you arrogant WP scum

      Northern Stormer - 2011-09-26 06:55
