Cheetahs down Blue Bulls

2012-08-17 21:39

Bloemfontein - The Free State Cheetahs beat the Blue Bulls 32-18 (23-10) in their Currie Cup encounter at the Free State stadium on Friday evening.

The home side were strong in defence, and overcame a lacklustre Bulls team.

Cheetahs lock Andries Ferreira scored in the first minute of the match. From the Cheetahs kickoff, the Bulls lost possession and Ferreira did the finishing to give the home side the early advantage.

The Bulls managed their first points in the 11th minute through a Louis Fouch penalty.

Riaan Smit replied for the Cheetahs with a penalty of his own before the Bulls scored their first try.

CJ Stander burst over in the corner after the visitors put together a couple of phases of attacking play. Fouch converted to put his side within three points of the hosts.

The Cheetahs had the best of the Bulls in the scrums, at least in the first half, and Smit kicked another penalty after the visitors were penalised after infringing.

The Cheetahs had the final say of the first period when eighth man Kabamba Floors dove over in the corner. His try came from good attacking play by scrum half Sarel Pretorius. Smit slotted the conversion to help his side to a comfortable lead of 23-10 at half time.

The Cheetahs continued their good defence, but ill discipline meant that Fouch could close the margin with his lengthy penalty kicks.

Smit kicked another penalty after the Bulls countered a Cheetahs attack illegally, to bring his tally to ten out of ten for the competition

The Bulls tried everything in the final minutes and were rewarded with a consolation try.

Stander went over for his second five pointer, but some poor decision making, combined with stellar defence by the Cheetahs, saw the Pretoria-based side head home without a single point for their efforts.

Congratulations Cheetahs! You deserved this win and totally outplayed my beloved Blue Bulls. The Bulls ball retention and general handling were poor and cost them dearly! Having said this I think the refereeing was appalling. Note I am not saying the Cheetahs were advantaged poor refereeing went both ways and there was no control in the scrums, rucks and offside lines. Go Griekwas smeer daai papsakke! Blou Bul Groete!

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-08-17 21:55

True @Priester, although I did not expect the young Bulls team to beat a relatively established Cheetah team. Wasn't our night tonight, Cheetahs deservedly won. Well done to them. The Lions IMO will be the team to beat (again), they really impressed against the Cheetahs last week. The currie cup is not the competition to introduce young refs, use the Vodacom Cup, ref was clueless.

      nkambazyofaninikuphelidakwa.chiliza - 2012-08-17 22:01

Taurus did u say lions is the team to beat? Don,t be silly do u thnk they wil come up with a win 2moro agaist my might sharks dream on.

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-08-17 22:10

I loooove the Sharks for whipping the Stormers in the semi-finals, but the Lions are playing a nice brand of rugga

      Priesterb - 2012-08-17 22:15

@Taurus, agreed the Lions should be great but I am not sure whether relegation will affect their play negatively. Plus point for the Blue Bulls is that the younger players are developing, Ulrich and all the backline players are improving and will be a force in the very near future. This loss will not cause me sleepless nights.

      skinfaxi.mordor - 2012-08-17 22:22

Priesterb hard luck to your guys. You are right about the standard of reffing. As a neutral I can tell you it was pathetic, but not entirely the ref to blame but more the AR's who missed an entire game. Two around the neck tackles on SP that no one could have missed and yet the only high tackle penalty given was a touch and go. At least 10 forward passes by the Cheetahs not picked up in the first half including the Floors try.... WK will be lucky not to be cited for two massive swinging arm fouls at ruck time. Well played Cheetahs..... another huge game from Ruhle...

Bulls are a bunch of hasbeens! Choke choke againts big sides! Bulls next team to leave s15 lol

I support two teams, Natal/Sharks and any body playing the Bulls, what happened to the depth of the bulls? a couple seasons ago they could string two solid teams together. Cheeters and Lions are the teams to beat, unchanged sides for a couple season, no Springbok loss effecting them. Sharks Bogie side in Kings park today, will be a true test of the depth of the Sharks

      tim.kilpin - 2012-08-18 10:53

Why are the refs / assistants not using the new experimental laws

      blou.johnny - 2012-08-18 13:28

  • shooshyu.tu - 2012-08-17 21:49

OH NO, the mighty Bulls 3 times super rugby champions get beaten by the Cheetahs & now the rest of the country can laugh at the useless Bulls. Lose by 14 points = no bonus point, only score 2 tries = NO bonus point. Cheetahs = 4 points - Bulls = 0, Nil, Nada, Naught, Nothing, Zip, Zero, Zilch. Congrats Cheetahs excellent result.

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-08-17 21:58

      Sad, really sad!

      niel.walt - 2012-08-18 07:39

Azurite, ur an idiot. These 2 teams were of equal strenght, ok well not really because the bulls lost! As far as currie cup goes the bulls had their 1 st team and so did the cheetas, people seem to forget that the cheetas lose the griquas side of their s15 wich has important players, the bulls were actually a stronger side as they didn't have to be stuck with morne and pierre.

      Stormkaap - 2012-08-18 11:54

Azurite big mouth, the Bulls played like pink ladies. only the Pink ladies is a usefull organisation looking for missing children.. The Bulls...well missing 4 players and they now a 'b' team.

      Cliff - 2012-08-19 14:43

Azurite -Thats an old excuse - Bulls 2nd Team Come now think of a better one !!! The WP 3rd team beat the griquas !!!

hey tom if his grammar incorrect his spelling must be off too. i would start at the name as i sure there a z and an x missing . and to chiliza this is curry cup not sr , results are not guaranteed, bulls lost to cheetahs and wp lost to sharks so results are not a guarantee. and as for super bru curry cup its screwed already!

"chockers"? 3 Super Rugby finals, 3 trophies. Chokers? No. Go check the Bulls success rate in CC finals. They are not chokers. Try to think before writing absolute nonsense.

      pieter.vanniekerk.188 - 2012-08-17 23:44

  • skinfaxi.mordor - 2012-08-17 23:50

Why has the loser of any contest suddenly become a choker? I don't think most of us South Africans even understand the meaning any more. In our minds one team won and the other team choked? Someone's gotta lose guys... (unless it's a draw and then someone's going to say both teams choked) As a Sharks supporter I have to say CJ Stander scared the hell out of me. Very powerful and pretty mobile too!

      niel.walt - 2012-08-18 07:12

I'm a Bulls fan, but I'll admit I think this is good for SA rugby as a whole. Sans boks, the Cheetahs would always give the Bulls a go, because when it comes to non-bought talent (if I can put it that way) the Vrystaat is a truly hard place. Well played this round, but we'll be back!

      paul.sdoow - 2012-08-18 07:06

its results like this and young talent given opportunity which makes curry cup still very intense and exciting. was disappointing to see Kwas going down so badly last week cause they normally do well in dirt two to three rounds not saying bulls didn't deserve win which they did. it all good for sa rugby agreed . as for today GO BOKKE

Well done cheetahs, some amazing hard work in all aspects of the game. My bulls tried but just came up against a better team. I will say though that there were encouraging signs of what our young team is able to do but were let down by some poor handling an decision making at key moments. Was just glad to see that attacking rugby was played with only a few of those useless up and unders.
