Bulls retain top youngsters

Pretoria - The Blue Bulls Company (Pty) Ltd has announced that Wiaan Liebenberg and William Small-Smith have both extended their current contracts and will be available to the Bulls and Blue Bulls in the foreseeable future.

Liebenberg captained the Junior Boks to a historic IRB Junior World Championship title in the final of the 2012 event, while Small-Smith, as his deputy, took charge of the team in the final pool match against England and the semi-final clash against Argentina when Liebenberg was injured.

Liebenberg is currently captaining the log-leading Blue Bulls Under-21 team, while Small-Smith, who is recovering from a knee injury sustained in the JWC, has played for South Africa at international Sevens level and captained SA Schools.

“This is very good news,” Bulls coach Frans Ludeke, said.

“Wiaan and William are proven leaders among their peers in their age groups and to have both extending their careers in Pretoria is a very positive step in our continued mission not only to produce championship teams, but championship people.

“We are conscious of the fact that rugby is much more than just the performance on the field and it is inspiring to know that we have two of the best young leaders in the country remaining loyal to the Blue Bulls brand. It shows that we are doing something right in our dedicated path to excellence.”

Both players have played senior rugby for the Blue Bulls already, having played for the Vodacom Cup team as well as their age group teams at Under-19 and Under-21 level.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
