Bulls put Sharks to the sword

2012-08-25 20:48

Pretoria - Flyhalf Louis Fouché scored 27 points with the boot as the Blue Bulls brushed off a disruptive build-up to the match, storming clear in the second half to beat the Sharks 42-31 in their Currie Cup clash at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday evening.

The Sharks held a narrow 14-12 lead at the half-time interval, but the Bulls recovered well after most of their players were struck down by the flu and were unable to train this week, bagging their second win of the competition.

Sharks flanker Jean Deysel scored a try in the 22nd minute and flyhalf Riaan Viljoen converted to keep them in the game, but Fouché put the hosts in control for most of the opening period.

Fouché, who was successful with all his place kicks on the evening, converted three penalties and a drop goal from more than 50m out to give the Bulls a 12-7 lead with two minutes left in the first half.

The Sharks, however, struck back in injury time, with lock Steven Sykes offloading to scrum-half Charl McLeod who dotted down.

Viljoen, who also converted all his place kicks in the match, added two points with the boot to regain the advantage for the visitors at the break.

The teams' flyhalves traded penalties in the early stages of the second period, but Bulls flanker CJ Stander broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when he grabbed a nippy pass from winger Akona Ndungane to cross the whitewash.

Five minutes later the Sharks hit back again as centre Marius Joubert powered through the Bulls defence, and Viljoen converted to bring them back within one point of the hosts at 25-24 with 23 minutes left in the game.

But Fouché added another three points from a penalty before Arno Botha and Francois Venter both scored tries for the home side to stamp their authority on proceedings.

The Sharks pushed forward in the closing stages and were rewarded with a bonus point try from Odwa Ndungane in second-half injury time.

What a vast improvement in the Blue Bulls outfit! The Blue Bulls played excellent in the second half and everybody contributed handsomely to a team effort. Did I detect some “Bulls style” up and unders by the Sharks? Both teams played well and I thank them for great entertainment. Go Bokke!! Blou Bul Groete!

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-08-25 20:52

Say What!!!... PriesterB... daai WP verloor is even better Lekker Bulle...Nou net vir die Bokke...

      cavin.snyman - 2012-08-25 20:53

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-08-25 20:57

Thx Cavin... Both teams played well to be honest...

      Priesterb - 2012-08-25 20:59

      Thanks Cavin

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-08-25 21:03

It goes to show, sometimes natural talent is trained out of the guys - only a practice run on Friday! I never gave my team a chance against the Sharks - sorry my Bulls. GREAT win tonight, Go BOKKE

      cavin.snyman - 2012-08-25 21:59

      Boks are playing poor rugby!!

      theunis.botha.96 - 2012-08-25 23:07

I refuse to congradulate the Bulls on their win.

      TravieGrif - 2012-08-25 23:17

What a great game of rugby to watch. I have hard feelings at losing that game...Bulls full value but what an entertaining encounter. I said during thus week that it was going to be tough, but such a delight to watch. Well done to both teams for a really enthralling contest. Great running, big hits, hard work done by both. I have to say that every time I see CJ Stander play I get more impressed. Pity about the loss Sharks, but we'll be stronger for that lesson with all the kids in the team. Hadebe did really well at hooker...another great prospect. Sharks Forever

      skinfaxi.mordor - 2012-08-26 00:20

Travie I said after last week's game that Stander scared the crap out of me. Now I know why! Even though we lost I'm still buzzing over that game. Pity about the bokke. What a horrible game to watch!

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-08-26 07:54

Nice open game - felt Sharks gifted Bulls some late tries - but the Bulls capitalised on these mistakes, well done. Hard to believe only 3 tries scored by Bulls but over 40 points! Both teams are performing well without some of their S15 players.

  • cavin.snyman - 2012-08-25 20:52

Great game to the Bulls. We'll deserved victory. Steyn under threat from 2 flyhalves now. Goosen and Fouche who had a brilliant game. Bok future F/H are looking great. You can do it again next week Sharks. Sharks forever!!!

  • charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-08-25 20:56

Sharks CHOKE again!!! Nice one Bulls!!!

      jacques.joubert.swart - 2012-08-26 01:49

HOW is this a choke if nothing was really on the line, they were just simply beaten and they are still giving the Bulls a run for their money in terms of log position (if they are, in fact, not ahead of them< i'm not sure)? Get off this choking thing and find another buzzword to throw around, bud.

      goldwright - 2012-08-26 10:23

Always gotta be some dumbwit in the mix.

      tim.kilpin - 2012-08-26 11:24

Dumb c omment that the Sharks choked

  • skinfaxi.mordor - 2012-08-25 20:58

Congratulations Blue Bulls. What a fantastic game of rugby. You guys really deserved the win. Brilliant play by Louis Fouché - awesome to watch even as a Sharks supporter. In fact I thoroughly enjoyed the game even though my team got thumped. I really didn't think I'd see a game of this quality from two teams so depleted by Springbok call ups. Well done.

      selma.botha.9 - 2012-08-26 11:49

Perhaps both sides faired so well because the coaches have not had sufficient time to coach the natural talent and flair out of the younger players.

  • willie.dique - 2012-08-25 20:59

    Bulle BO!!!!

  • hans.himmler.7 - 2012-08-25 21:31

Well Done Bulle. Sharkies, not bad, but a far cry from Currie Cup Champions.

  • nicholas.graan - 2012-08-25 21:32

and to think just about this whole team spent most of last week in bed with flu!

      vickers.vermeulen - 2012-08-26 08:45

Flu? I thought her name was Flo :-)

  • gavin.simpson.0 - 2012-08-25 22:41

Well played Bulls, good value for the win. Well played Sharks, the BP helps ease the pain a tad....

  • amore.gerber.5 - 2012-08-25 23:11

Ek is n WP ondersteuner en wil graag die Bulle en die Sharks gelukwens met n baie goeie wedstryd. Ek het CJ Stander van sy kleintyd af dopgehou. Hy gaan nog n reus in SA rugby word. Mark my words.

  • bloudaan.blou - 2012-08-25 23:34

Ek is trots op my Bulletjies....!!!!

      TravieGrif - 2012-08-25 23:37

You have every reason to be proud mate. Your Bulls played really well. Huge advert for SA rugby!

  • francois.vorster.925 - 2012-08-25 23:54

Why the minute silence before the game for a bunch of barbaric criminals? This country is sick!

      skinfaxi.mordor - 2012-08-26 00:26

Francois look at it from another angle. Some poor kids out there have lost a parent, some spouses have lost their partners and parents have lost their kids. A lot of people who did nothing wrong are in pain and suffering. Do you feel nothing for them? South Africa has had it's name once again dragged through the mud. Don't you think that's worth mourning?

      francois.vorster.925 - 2012-08-26 08:21

Skinfaxi Have we ever had a minute silence for all the farmers that were murdered? - NO! Because that would put the anc in a bad light. This is not about mourning the dead it all about scoring political points.

  • andre.bloom.12 - 2012-08-26 07:24

Great game. The Sharks did well to score 4 tries as they were demolished up front by an awesome Bulls pack. Fouche played perfect Baas Naas rugby. Watch your back Morne.

  • eugene.brink.9 - 2012-08-26 08:55

Wel gedaan Bulle en veral Louis Fouche. Morne Steyn gaan dalk nie sy plek in die Bul-span terugkry as dit so aangaan nie! Baie trots op my span!

  • goldwright - 2012-08-26 10:22

Great sensible comments in the spirit of the game - nice to see just about everyone, regardless of which team they support, giving the praise where it's due and not team bashing just for the sake of it.

  • tim.kilpin - 2012-08-26 11:19

To many penalisable errors from the Sharks in kickable positions and Viljoen was on song

  • selma.botha.9 - 2012-08-26 11:44

After such an exciting and pulsating 'opening game' to the test match the Springboks and Pumas failed to impress miserably. Well done to the Sharks and Bulls for a most entertaining display of rugby. The other fixture put me to sleep. Amazing that the Currie Cup Competition, the oldest competiton in the game of rugby, never fails to delight irrespective of the side one supports. As supporters we should make our voices heard and not allow the PTB to intefere with the format of this wonderful truly South African competition.
