Boland floor Griffons

Welkom - The Boland Cavaliers turned in a strong second-half performance to see off the Griffons 55-35 (half-time 22-22) in their Currie Cup First Division match at the North West Stadium on Saturday.

According to the supersport.com website, the teams went to the half-time break locked at 22-22 but Boland ran in five second-half tries to see off the hosts.

Boland flyhalf Eric Zana ended with a personal haul of 20 points courtesy of a try, a penalty and six conversions while left wing Brendon April ran in a brace of tries.

The Griffons had the consolation of grabbing a bonus point as they ran in five tries of their own but they had no answer to the second-half blitz from the Cavaliers.

The first half had been an even affair with the hosts running in tries through No 8 Tertius Daniller, inside centre Japie Nel and wing Danwell Demas while hooker Clemen Lewis, Zana and April dotted down for Boland.

The Griffons opened the scoring in the second half, through a penalty from flyhalf Louis Strydom before Boland struck back in the 46th minute when April went over for his second try.

The match still seemed to be in the balance when the Griffons regained the lead three minutes later when outside centre Werner Griesel scored an unconverted try.

However, the rest of the match belonged almost exclusively to Boland as they went on the rampage, scoring 28 unanswered points in the space of 21 minutes.

Right wing Cheswin Williams, flank Phillip van Zyl, replacement centre Wynandt Pienaar and replacement hooker Ulrich Pretorius all crossed for converted tries as Boland claimed their fifth win of the season.
