Boks boost for Province

2011-10-13 09:28

Cape Town - Jean de Villiers will captain a Springbok-filled Western Province line-up in the team's Currie Cup rugby match against the Pumas at Newlands on Saturday.

The midfielder is one of six returning Boks snapped up for the 22-man match-day squad by Province head coach Allister Coetzee.

Schalk Burger and Jaque Fourie will start on the substitutes bench.

"Juan (De Jongh) only played one match at the World Cup in New Zealand and that's why I decided to rest Jaque," said Coetzee on Thursday.

"I feel Jaque will do well off the bench, and besides not many of the youngsters in the team have played with him in the past.

"I'm using Burger as an impact player and when he does come on, I have an option with flanker Pieter Louw who can play at six, seven or eight as required.

"Gio (Aplon) will start at fullback and he's there because of the way we plan to play.

"The great thing about the Boks is that none of them are carrying niggles, and all of them are running flat out. None of them have strapping and none of them needed ice treatment at Wednesday's training.

"In the absence of the Boks I must say that the young players learnt many lessons and they were outstanding when the team were hit hard by repeated injury setbacks. They all showed great fighting spirit and that's not something one can coach.

"I'm glad that we can field this team now because it gives all of them a chance to know each other ahead of the play-off matches. I like the situation in the backline where Demetri (Catrakalis) will have four Boks alongside him, and I'm sure his game will benefit a great deal."

Province will be without their kingpin, scrumhalf Dewalt Duvenage, who underwent an operation on his toe on Tuesday.

"Dewaldt tore a muscle in his toe and it needed an operation," said Coetzee.

"Even with the Boks back, his absence is a blow to our side because for the past few weeks he's been the soul of the team. He played an incredible leadership role in an inexperienced side and was the only senior guy along with Conrad Jantjes in the backline. He proved to be an outstanding goalkicker when he was called upon, so he's worth a great deal to this team."

Lock De Kock Steenkamp is down with a stomach complaint and will sit out this week's action.

He will be in the selection mix week next when a likely semifinal against the Lions in Johannesburg is looming. In his absence, Adriaan Fondse will make the calls at line-out time.

Western Province: 15 Gio Aplon, 14 JJ Engelbrecht, 13 Juan De Jongh, 12 Jean De Villiers (captain), 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Nic Groom, 8 Nick Koster, 7 Siya Kolisi, 6 Pieter Louw, 5 Adriaan Fondse, 4 Hilton Lobberts, 3 Brok Harris, 2 Deon Fourie, 1 JC Kritzinger

Substitutes: 16 Tiaan Liebenberg, 17 Frans Malherbe, 18 Tertius Daniller, 19 Schalk Burger, 20 Louis Schreuder, 21 Jaque Fourie, 22 Conrad Jantjes

...and a Bok-boost for SA! Good to have our men back. To all the players...enjoy!

      GHT - 2011-10-13 10:41

Have you ever received a thumbs down for a comment? Lol.

      Anneleen - 2011-10-13 10:46

@GHT...thanks for the laugh! Many, one instance, more than a hundred! What about yourself?

      GHT - 2011-10-13 11:16

Yeah I do. Constantly... But nowhere close to 100!

      Anneleen - 2011-10-13 11:26

@GHT...suffice to say that was a very sensitive topic that was discussed...!

      WPBLIKSEM - 2011-10-13 11:46

      WHOOOOOOW WHAT a STRONG team?????

  • Kdub - 2011-10-13 09:34

    shame.. poor Pumas :)

      Mike@CapeT - 2011-10-13 10:39

Poor Lions........their easy ride has come to an end...:)!

      nic - 2011-10-13 10:45

I think lucky Engelbrecht on left Poolman, no Sadie at outside centre...good talent back but the team is not much better except for Aplon at Full back..midfield is slightly stronger as a whole but absence of Sadie (SA's best form centre watchout for him in 2015) is unfortunate.

      Sarge - 2011-10-13 10:52

      Pumas by 15

      WPBLIKSEM - 2011-10-13 11:52

      BigD - 2011-10-13 18:11

Hey sarge. You must stop sniffing the WP jockstraps. That has made your predictions goofy.

  • Sbuda - 2011-10-13 09:37

R they really that scared of the Pumas?

      gooinat - 2011-10-13 09:56

Not scared of the Pumas, just want to bury the Bulls good and solid:):)

      Rampage15 - 2011-10-13 10:07

It's not abt the Pumas it's about getting our team to gel before the Semi's & final

      GHT - 2011-10-13 10:10

I think there is a rule that states that players must feature in at least 1 league game of the season. Like in the S15.

  • theunsh - 2011-10-13 09:37

dit lyk vir my of WP bang vir die Pumas is

      EishPasteSarmi - 2011-10-13 11:38

      Strmsm - 2011-10-13 11:49

      Christy - 2011-10-13 15:12

Nee theunsie, glad nie. Ons braaaaag net 'n bietjie oor ons talent.....

  • Steyts - 2011-10-13 09:38

Bye bye Bulls!! See you next year... Lions WP next weekend will be a cracker of a game!!! Maar vir nou is dit eers SA vs Aus vanaand in die eerste t20!!!

      SA-FAN - 2011-10-13 14:56

Kom ons kry hulle terug vir die rugby :)

  • Hanjo - 2011-10-13 09:39

Gio at the back looks promising, can't wait to see guy s like Hilton, Siya and Catrakilis combine with the first choice players.

  • Spear The Mighty - 2011-10-13 09:40

Schalck Burger en Fourie on the bench...that is a good place to be.

  • NiceToKnowYo - 2011-10-13 09:41

    Bye-Bye Bulls!!!

      DeonL - 2011-10-13 10:43

You forgot that Habana is also back, he may "give" the Pumas a few tries with his failed interceptions.

      NiceToKnowYo - 2011-10-13 12:05

Habana isn't his former self, but did improve during the world cup, Pumas won't turn it into points.... Bulls must keep their fate in their own hands, and not only wish the worst for WP... BYE BYE!!!!

  • gooinat - 2011-10-13 09:43

Province by 30, then to meet the Lions in the semi's and Bulls to have early break:):):)

      Bigboet - 2011-10-13 11:06

      Just like in Superugby

  • UnknownUser - 2011-10-13 09:44

it is rumored that the WP players threw the game against Australia in the world cup cause WP was desperate for silver wear this

      gooinat - 2011-10-13 09:54

Did ur mother never tell you te never to listen to rumours!!!!!

      sean - 2011-10-13 10:02

      Think you've got some silver ware stuck up your ass pal ! ! ! ! ! !

      GHT - 2011-10-13 10:17

Well. The WP guys played great in the semi. I mean JDV had a cracker of a game and so too did Schalk. My vote for SA player of the year!

      gooinat - 2011-10-13 10:21

GHT,a lot of people were and still are having a go at Schalk but that man is just awesome and hes work rate is unbelievable,so glad he is in the colours of Province, whether people like it or not!!!!!!!!

      GHT - 2011-10-13 10:35

@gooinat. I agree. Show me a South African player that has had a bigger influence for both province and country this season. I don't think you will find 1. Schalk my vote for player of the year.

      Howzitekse - 2011-10-13 11:39

JDV and De Jonge should swop positions because De Jonge is a better defender and distributer than JDV. With Spies and FDP as passengers and Smit and Matfield failing to come up with ideas it is the Bulls players that cost us the game WC quarter final.

  • Grunk - 2011-10-13 09:46

I see Habana is back weakening the backline again.

  • Johan - 2011-10-13 09:59

"Boks boost for Province" with Habana??????

      Grunk - 2011-10-13 12:42

What have you got that I haven't got, Johan (apart from charm, personality and good looks)? You are saying exactly the same thing as me and look at the rating you get compared to mine. I want some good NZ refereeing of this site!!!

  • ROOIHART - 2011-10-13 10:01

Weak on lock, scrummie and flyhalf...

      UncleRonney - 2011-10-13 10:09

I presume that the majority that's against the WP choice of players are FlouVulle supporters. Keep your comments to after the game. GO WP GO

      ROOIHART - 2011-10-13 10:18

Merely pointing out weak points in wp team. I support the lions....but I do respect the blue bulls alot, they have actually meant something for sa-rugby and is the closest thing we have to the Crusaders. Province on the other hand....not labelled as chokers for nothing.

      Logoll - 2011-10-13 10:50

Since when is Adriaan fondse weak, and I have to admit the Lobberts did really improve this season. Playing a much smarter game. As for flyhalf, well the general feeling is that Catrikilis has been playing out of his boots considering he is only something like 6th choice flyhalf. And then for such young players they have made outplayed the much vaunted "Crusaders of South Africa" as you put it. (still laughing my ass off about that one)

      FRANCOIS27 - 2011-10-13 11:14

can you play rugby ass face- you r probably weak everywhere - weak excuse for a person

      GHT - 2011-10-13 11:27

@Rooihart. I agree. We are weak in those positions. That is what injuries can do to a team. We lost Bekker and Elstadt at lock and Vermeulen at 8. The reason why our scrumhalves are in this current state is because January ensured that none of the young guys got any experience for years!!!! Flyhalfs are 1. Grant, 2. van Aswegen 3. Lionel Cronje (although he doesn't deserve nr3 anymore) 4. Sam Lane (out the entire season before it even began!) 5. Kurt Coleman 6. Catrikilis 7. Dollie. We also used Duvenhage and Earl Rose before we decided to give Catrikilis a go at 10.

      ROOIHART - 2011-10-13 11:59

@ght - thanks for showing there are some wp supoorters who can talk sense. Injuries have been a major problem for wp and elstadt and bekker would have been very handy at this stage. As for the list of flyhalves, peter grant plays for the kobe steelers, not wp. I acknowledge that wp have had major setbacks at flyhalf, but CatrIkilis is not 6th ranked. Maybe 3rd or 4th. Remember cronje is available but wp not selecting him because of bulls contract next year.

      GHT - 2011-10-13 12:19

True. The list only shows the ranking at the start of the year. It has definitely been shuffled quite a bit after the last 9 months of rugby and there has been some major losers. I think van Aswegen and Catrikilis will be fighting it out for a spot in the S15 match day 22.

      Wide Awake - 2011-10-13 15:34

@Rooihart - In my opinion the Flyhalf rankings are (1) Grant - Okay he play in Japan but he is contracted to WP (2) Catrakilis(3) Van Aswegen(4) Duvenage (5)Coleman(6)Sam Lane (7) Cronje (8)Dollie - after Grant the greek is no 1 !!!!

  • Aromat - 2011-10-13 10:16

Isn't there a law preventing the type of punishment/violation that the Pumas are going to receive this weekend at the hands of Province?

  • wplife - 2011-10-13 10:16

its good to have a full stenght side again. all our players are Basically coming back from injury and the our boks are back. Plus the youngsters have done a brillant job to get us to this point in the currie cup

  • SAFFA-CAT - 2011-10-13 10:20

Now this cheers me up a little...........

      gooinat - 2011-10-13 10:29

Saffa Cat,long time no speak...........................I know how you feel,I am just as gutted as you, hopefully our WP boys can make us proud!!!!!!!!!!

  • genisus - 2011-10-13 10:39

To all the clever people saying WP is scared of Pumas don't you think this is a perfect game for the team to get familiar with each other before taking on an in form Lions side before semi's? Love the intellectual capacity some people demonstrate! WP jou lekker ding!!

  • Wide Awake - 2011-10-13 10:48

Good team - good luck !!

  • Marius Swart - 2011-10-13 11:31

  • Niel - 2011-10-13 11:32

HEADLINE - Bok boost for province - REALLY? HABANA a boost in his current? he is a good player but not in current form. Good to see de jongh in but i would have prefered fourie in place of de villiers. Also, how aboet aplon on the wing and jantjes (out of form a little) at full back. Burger on the Bench?????? why?????

      GHT - 2011-10-13 11:36

Burger and Fourie has played a massive amount of rugby this season. Entire S15 almost never being subbed and same for the RWC. They need the break.

  • Anton - 2011-10-13 11:55

I cant beleive that Allister Coetzee would include springboks to play against the Pumas, or to even allow them to play for the remaining Semi-s or Final. The WP team that made it this far should finish the competition. I hope that none of the other provinces will include any springboks...How will our young talent ever get exposed to semi finals or finals..? GO PUMAS AND BLUEBULLS

      GHT - 2011-10-13 12:04

The last 4 words of your sentence (even though it should have been 5) shows what you actually care about. The development of youngsters at your own benefit. Why are the Bulls allowed to include their Boks like Olivier and Kichener? Weren't they keeping youngsters out of the team as well?

      ROOIHART - 2011-10-13 12:20

      Let the bokke play.

  • Coenza - 2011-10-13 11:59

  • SST - 2011-10-13 14:36

To my fellow WP supporters saying shame to the other teams who do not have any Springboks returning; be careful, be very careful as you might end up eating humble pie come this weekend, the semi or final. I'm glad the Springboks are back to help WP, for the injuries WP is struggling with resulted in the team dropping further and further down the log and could still fail to make the semi-final. Any of the top 6 teams on the log could still take the Currie Cup this season.

  • Cliff - 2011-10-13 14:48

    All their Boks were also available in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010

      WP-Plus - 2011-10-13 17:49

My china can't you count more than 9 years in a row or what ??? I was under the impression it's 11 years - Go Province !!!!
