Blitzbok boosts Cheetahs

Cape Town - The Cheetahs have acquired the services of Springbok Sevens flyer Bernado Botha for the Currie Cup competition.

According to the Volksblad website, the 25-year-old wing has been released by the Blitzbokke to play for the Cheetahs for the duration of the competition.

With Rayno Benjamin, Tonderai Chavhanga and Cameron Jacobs all sidelined with knee injuries, the Cheetahs were forced to stock up on their wing reserves.

Raymond Rhule is the only other fit wing available, which necessitated the coaching staff to pick Riaan Smit on the wing against the Golden Lions at Ellis Park last week.

Cheetahs backline coach Hawies Fourie welcomed the decision to lure in Botha, as Jacobs will be sidelined for long and Benjamin and Chavhanga only back by mid-September.

"Bernado is a similar sort of player as Rayno Benjamin," said Fourie. "He's a good defender, strong ball carrier and has a high work ethic. That's what you need from a wing."

Botha has represented the Blitzbokke for the past four years.
