Assistant refs upset WP coach

Cape Town - Western Province coach Allister Coetzee is upset with calls made by assistant referees at scrum time during the Currie Cup.

There is renewed focus on scrums with the new "crouch, bind, set" rule in use and it's an area in which WP struggled in against Griquas in Kimberley last week.

However, according to Coetzee it wasn't necessarily all by their own doing.

"It gets irritating when the assistant referees try to get involved by focusing on trivial things," Coetzee told Die Burger's website.

"There was an instance (during the Griquas game) when the assistant referee made a recommendation to the referee, but he was 50m away from the scrum. I don't know how their eyesight can be that good!

"It has an influence on the referee and puts a lot of pressure on him. The referee has to be given a chance to sort it out himself," said Coetzee.

WP take on the Lions at Ellis Park on Friday and Coetzee is happy that the experienced Jaco Peyper will take charge of the game. Sieg van Staden and Jaco van Heerden will be his assistants.

"Jaco is an experienced and good referee. He should be competent enough to handle the scrum battle in the correct manner," said Coetzee.

Kick-off is at 19:10 on Friday.
