Comeback Kings snatch draw

2012-09-22 07:54

Port Elizabeth - The EP Kings overturned a 21-point deficit to snatch a 26-26 draw (half-time 5-16) with the Ford Pumas in their Absa Currie Cup First Division match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

The log-leading Kings had won 11 matches and drawn one heading into the clash with the Pumas but they looked down and out as they slid to 26-5 down in the 55th minute. It was the second draw between the two teams this season after a 30-30 draw in the reverse fixture.

The hosts, despite being down to 14 men for much of the match found a second wind to run in three tries in the last 23 minutes of the game, with eighthman Luke Watson grabbing two five-pointers, to secure what had looked like an unlikely draw.

Pumas flyhalf JC Roos kicked 16 points courtesy of two conversions and four penalties for the visitors, while he also played a major role in the first try of the match.

The Kings did not help themselves with some poor discipline with right wing Paul Perez red carded in the first half for punching while lock David Bulbring picked up a yellow card for stamping but they showed great character to fight back despite the setbacks.

The Pumas began the game the brighter of the two sides and it took them just four minutes to open their account after centre JW Jonker chased through a deft grubber from Roos to dot down for a converted try.

The Kings struck back just three minutes later when wing Marcello Sampson dived over in the corner to round off a strong passage of play from the home team with their attack beginning on their own 10 metre line.

The hosts seemed to have the edge in the tight phases but the Pumas’ defence was tigerish and Roos made the Kings pay for their ill-discipline with three penalties as the visitors raced to a 16-5 lead after 20 minutes.

Perez then received his deserved red card when he landed a flurry of punches on Pumas’ left wing Wilhelm Loock in the 27th minute before Bulbring received a yellow card five minutes later for stamping on an opponent.

Despite being down to 13 men the Kings managed to reach the break without conceding any points with the Pumas holding a 16-5 lead at half-time.

However, the Pumas made their two-man advantage count three minutes after the restart when fullback Coenie van Wyk sliced through the Kings’ stretched defensive line to scoot clear for a converted try.

Roos extended the lead with his fourth penalty before the Kings showed that they still had some fight left in them when inside centre Tiger Mangweni slid over for a converted try in the 57th minute after a powerful run.

The score seemed to invigorate the hosts who, despite the heavy rain in the final quarter, had the better of their opponents despite being a man down and their repeated attacks eventually paid off when Pumas flank Jaco Bouwer was yellow carded in the 67th minute after the visitors had been warned for repeated infringements.

The Kings’ persistence paid off in the 74th minute when Watson was mauled over for his 11th try of the season before he dotted down again two minutes from time in a similar fashion with flyhalf George Whitehead stepping up to slot the conversion which secured the draw.

EP KINGS – Tries: Marcello Sampson, Tiger Mangweni, Luke Watson (2); Conversions: George Whitehead (3).

FORD PUMAS – Tries: JW Jonker, Coenie van Wyk; Conversions: JC Roos (2); Penalties: Roos (4).

      macziekpk - 2012-09-22 09:21

This is beyond rigged. It is sickening to see such a mockery of the game we all love. Thanks ref for another cheated result. Memo for the season: EP Kings are not to lose one game

      lesbeen - 2012-09-22 09:24

What the f...!!!! Couldn't beat the only competition in a weak CC b-section.. At home... This might be worse than I expected!!! This goes a long way to show why the EP has been lingering in the 2nd tier for the last decade! EP on the rise, just hit a ceiling!!!

      matt.prinsloo.1 - 2012-09-22 12:15

Peter... Voor jy tekere gaan oor daai insident. Dit was verkeerd en hy sal gestraf word. Maar wie in SA kan vingers wys mmm?\r\n

      lesbeen - 2012-09-22 23:44

@ Visser... Bwahahahaha... Bulls can expect the same? Bwahahahahaha... A draw in PE? Bwahahahaha... And that should see the Bulls through and the Kings back in the B-section. Bwahaahahaha... You fools, as long as there is a Rel/ promo game, you will never play Currie cup rugby! THEN try to contract players to play Super15 and currie cup B-section... Bwahahahahaha...

      patrickjasoncawood - 2012-09-23 10:56

I seem to remember these same Pumas beat the "Mighty Bulls" last season in the Currie Cup...

      Ruan - 2012-09-23 12:44

Can't win Currie Cup First Division but going to play Super Rugby next season? Oh well... The Gqiquas would have been a lot better in entering the Super15 than these jokers.

      Lunga - 2012-09-22 09:21

You are an idiot. Have you seen the log? Go back into the smelly hole you came out of. The Kings deserve the chance to play in Super Rugby. Judging by yesterday's display, you have no idea about rugby. Go jump into a bloody dam, you idiot. Have you seen the log? Idiots like you should not be entitled to have an opinion.

      macziekpk - 2012-09-22 09:25

Griquas organ donors to Cheetahs already

      patrickjasoncawood - 2012-09-22 09:35

Did not realise provincial teams played in Super Rugby... This is the EP Kings not the Southern Kings...IDIOT

      macziekpk - 2012-09-22 09:41

Lunga...Judging by yesterdays display of fighting and thuggery. You have no clue idiot. They are playing 1st division. Not even good enough to be in the top 6 teams in SA. Idiots like you should not be entitled to breathe air. Oh that old chestnut "entitled" - so perfect for this article, and you

      taetjo.mathabatha - 2012-09-22 09:50

Lunga, calling people you don't know is an excellent indication of how enlightened you are I guess. Have fun man. Take care. I will go back into the smelly hole I came from. I assume you have done so already. #C.U.N.T

      mogau.makhubele - 2012-09-22 10:02

Lunga, you are the biggest idiot on display here. How can you say that to someone that is stating the facts? Yes, EP Kings can't and haven't won the Currie Cup 1st division. What about their position on the log? Does that mean that they are going to win, just because they are in 1st position? LOL! Really? And you have the balls (however tiny they might be), to call other people idiots? Alright, you should not have an opinion yourself. You must go to the edu-refugee camp in Khayelitsha and drink some water and eat some soya.

      Lunga - 2012-09-22 10:46

Stupidy is going to be the death of us. You lot are killing our country. Have you idiots even seen the first division log? Come back and comment when you have, please.

      Mandy Casey - 2012-09-22 15:47

Lunga the only log the Kings need to worry about will be the BACK LOG. To draw in first division game and could have lost. Means that they are no where close to deserve Super Rugby place.

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-09-22 21:09

Patrick, it's only the Kings who are playing a different side in Super Rugby. The other teams are playing their provincial side in both the Currie Cup (Premier not 1st Division) and Super Rugby. But don't let the facts get in the way of a good story. You are obviously with the group of people who feel the Kings deserve and are entitled to play Super Rugby!!!

      lesbeen - 2012-09-22 23:54

@ Patricjasongaywood... You are right, The southern King actually include the awesome talents of the SWD and Border team aswell... That could surely make a huge difference to EP Kings team... Cheeky is already bitching about the difficulty of contracting players so I will be very surprised if they sign a great deal of top-class talent? Especially if you consider that those players will be playing in die B-section of the Currie cup next year? Strauss, Sykes en Catrikillis teken kontrakte om vir die Kings te speel... Hulle se hulle is klaar met groot-rugby!!!

      patrickjasoncawood - 2012-09-23 10:57

@Lesbeen, did they also forget to deliver your textbooks when you were at school??

      luke.sportify - 2012-09-23 11:14

@ Lesbian Catrikillis is 23...Why do all you Lions supporters hate EP? You should be pointing your smelly fingers at SARU and your own administrators.. By the only 13 EP players have been offered SR contracts of a squad of 35

      Ruan - 2012-09-23 12:49

Im With you lunga!! this oak is a chop!!

      suidlander.vanwyk - 2012-09-23 21:42

Hey Tae, ever heard of an oval shaped ball called rugby, you idiots have been singing the same annoying song, go jump you fool

  • spear.tackle.7 - 2012-09-22 10:09

Let PDV coach the Super Kings ! They might just be a competitive team nextyear

  • louis.langenhoven - 2012-09-22 12:28

I see little lucky Luke is doing a PdV impersonation with his moustache...guess he's trying to ensure he makes the team if Peter Divvy becomes coach

  • blou.johnny - 2012-09-22 16:43

....and these Southern Clowns want to play Super Rugby next year..??? ...what a joke...!!

      luke.sportify - 2012-09-23 11:16

How's your side doing in the Currie Cup?

      suidlander.vanwyk - 2012-09-23 21:48
