Coetzee not on Meyer's list

2012-01-23 22:13

Cape Town - Stormers coach Allister Coetzee has not been approached by Heyneke Meyer to form part of the Springbok coaching team, he said on Monday.

Speaking after his team's training session in Bellville, Coetzee denied media reports that he had spoken to Meyer about taking a job as assistant coach.

Meyer is the hot favourite to succeed Peter de Villiers when the new national coach is named on Friday.

"Heyneke never approached me," Coetzee said.

"We last chatted about two weeks ago, but we did not speak about Springbok-related matters."

Coetzee confirmed last week that he was not on the SA Rugby Union's shortlist for the Bok head coaching job.

The shortlist has reportedly been whittled down to two names - Meyer, the Blue Bulls' senior professional coach, and Ireland forwards coach Gert Smal.

The Afrikaans newspaper, Rapport, reported on Sunday that Meyer was the favourite for the position and that he had met with SARU CEO Jurie Roux in Pretoria last week.

I mean seriously!!... you can't blame him for not approaching you?

  • Danie - 2012-01-23 22:54

Coetzee gaan weg en bly weg asb.

  • Barry - 2012-01-23 23:20

You are most probably blue bull supporters, don't think with your bulls hat on, put the springbok hat on. There is nothing wrong with Coetzee's coaching ability. We need to play Shark , blue bull and western province rugby, then only will we win a world cup. Blue bull rugby is why we got knocked out of the world cup and not Bryce Lawrence. I am not saying nothing in the blue bulls game plan is incorrect, there line outs is of the best in the world. WP back line is the best in SA, and sharks style of play. Get them all involved and bring Gert Small back to SA, just look at what he did with Ireland. Ireland beat Australia up front in the world cup. Rassie should also be there. So to recap Coetzee, Meyer, Erasmus and Gert Small backed by Percy (kicking), Os (Front row), Matfield (line outs), John Smith, Robbie Flack (Back line) and last but not least PDV as a CONSULTANT he has the experience of a world cup, keep him for advice. Show me any better coaching staff. And get some Lions players in the squad.

      Ulrich - 2012-01-23 23:24

      Too many coaches there.

      Matthew Patrick - 2012-01-23 23:31

I'd call that a recipe that could win any world cup!

      Sean - 2012-01-24 00:49

Why not make Pdv media liaison , lol !

      Hennie - 2012-01-25 15:38

@Barry We need to play Shark , blue bull and western province rugby, then only will we win a world cup.... Why would you want to do that, none of these teams made any impact, not even on the LIONS ,even though all the Bokke came from these teams. But with that said I do no think Meyer is a bad selection.

  • Matthew Patrick - 2012-01-23 23:28

This is coming from a Lions supporter but I actually think Alistair Coetzee is a super defensive coach. In last year's Super 15 the Stormers conceded the second lowest amount of tries.

      Dewald - 2012-01-24 07:54

AC's not a super defensive coach, When Fourie were absent in the backline they were ordinary.

      Kosie - 2012-01-24 08:23

it was actually Jacques Nienaber that was the defense coach and not Alistair.

  • Bulldozer - 2012-01-23 23:34

    Heyneke weet van beter.

  • Tony - 2012-01-24 05:53

Raak so gou moontlik ontslae van hom anders is julle binne 3 jaar in dieselfde posisie as wat hy OP gelos het nadat hy hulle af gerig het, bottom of the log in the 1st division.

      Wynhandt - 2012-01-24 08:11

  • Jason Children - 2012-01-24 06:11

Last time i checked Coetzee had a World Cup title to his name!

      Bulldozer - 2012-01-24 06:39

Yes, the luggage master as well. Idiot.

      Marius - 2012-01-24 08:14

Only because Eddie Jones basically took his job over as backline coach 2 months before the WC and achieved more with the backline in those 2 months than Coetzee did in the previous 3 years.

  • Clive - 2012-01-24 06:44

No surprises there for Coetzee. Pity though, as now he will continue to screw up WP.

  • Dwerg - 2012-01-24 06:52

My gunsteling is dat Meyer nog nie aangekondig is as coach nie - "Rapport reported on Sunday" Ek hoop Gert Smal kry die aanstelling Die Ierland forwards het die afgelope ruk moer goed gespeel, veral in die Wêreld Beker

      Bulldozer - 2012-01-24 06:56

      Kosie - 2012-01-24 08:26

@ dozer: you are going on about the backline all the time, when last did the bulls play with a backline, they've been playing ten man rugby for the last 5 years.

      Bulldozer - 2012-01-24 08:56

Wat bedoel jy ek gaan aan oor die backline 'all the time', idioot? Plank.

      Tony - 2012-01-25 07:26

      @Bulldozer...en afgestaan ook. Plank.

  • Eduard - 2012-01-24 07:02

who ever is the coach, i hope he takes SA rugby to another level...higher level

  • Eduard - 2012-01-24 07:09

I just wish we can start playing rugby with our brains, instead of always the muscle rugby. "I am not very clever, but I can lift heavy things"...is the style we have been playing for too long in this country. Under PdV..it was 10man rugby with old people, out of form. No back line sparks and the stars of 2007..Brain, JP hardly got the ball. But hey, Morne was suppose to do the talking with his boot...right!!! We need smart, fit and strong players...do we have the right coach to develop this? Actually it goes deeper...we need the young players to be coached by innovative coaches at club level, then, we need these players to up the level into super rugby and then finally into the Springbok team....at that level, if the player still cannot "think" change him out!!!

  • Etienne - 2012-01-24 07:25

  • Philip - 2012-01-24 08:08

If you want the best team to take charge of the Springboks and you want to be successful you will have to make up a team of the best !If they are prepared and not too headstrong !I would have opt for Meyer (HC) Mitchel (Forward C) Coetzee (Back C) Then Plum and Rassie as Technical advisers Unfortunately the Provinces will never agree to that That team can put together and prepare a unbeatable Springbok side !! But then live is not that easy!!Would be interesting to see who get what Don't take it for granted that Meyer is the chosen one Remember what happened last time around!!!!!!! Rassie will be in there that is for sure therefore his resignation from WP Gert Smal will be there and the Lions defense coach will be there The rest will be seen Dont be too surprised to see Snorre as part of that team!! Then my rugby friend For once leave the politics out of this column Come on we all are rugby enthusiasts You and I can not change the past and we can not change how people feel!!Lets talk rugby and Rugby alone!! What is to happen by interference in Rugby is going to happen We will have to deal with it If you and I don't like it stay away and don't watch the beloved game!! We are not making any rugby friends by calling each other names!!

  • Munro - 2012-01-24 08:15

New Era has begun . Bokke!!!

      Barry - 2012-01-24 13:08

Well Munro he is better than you. Keep politics out of Rugby!

  • Kosie - 2012-01-24 08:30

it is all speculation; be prepared to eat your hat if meyer doesn't get the job. remember this is anc country, nothing works as it is supposed to...

      Bootman - 2012-01-24 08:45

.....as apposed to an NP country when everything was just perfect for you, right Kosie

      Kosie - 2012-01-24 08:56

      before my time, wouldn't know

      Bulldozer - 2012-01-24 08:57

It was better in NP country.

  • Abie - 2012-01-24 08:52

Get ready for more boring blue bulls "skop en storm" type rugby. Get ready to count players of colour on your one hand and feel lucky if you can count to two.

      Bulldozer - 2012-01-24 08:58

  • Anton - 2012-01-24 09:05

@ Bulldozer.......Typical Blue Bulls supporter in Bulls rugby shirt, blue rugby shorts and blue Crocs when he goes to the mall, movies, restaurant, seaside (Margate/Ballito). Then he calls everybody else idiots!!

      Bulldozer - 2012-01-24 09:48

Ek dra my Noord Transvaal kouse ook saam met my Crocs.

  • Stephan - 2012-01-24 09:09

don't think any of you know what you are talking about. blue bulls supporters can go write a book about what they think...as all their players do. meyer is good, but coetzee deserves a spot on that staff. SARU is the problem. but whatever, let the boys play rugby!

      Barry - 2012-01-24 13:10

Stephan every South African is a coach and you are one of them. Put your springbok cap on and take your blue bull hat off.

  • alexander721 - 2012-01-25 17:24

coetzee is a good coach who understands the players abilities and needs, he should be on the bok management team
