Coetzee: No Bok job for me

2012-01-18 16:13

Cape Town - Stormers coach Allister Coetzee confirmed on Wednesday he was not in the running for the Springbok coaching job.

Coetzee was supposedly on a shortlist of possible candidates compiled by South African Rugby Union (SARU), including Ireland forwards coach Gert Smal and Blue Bulls rugby director Heyneke Meyer.

However, Coetzee told the Eyewitness News website he rather wants to focus on his current job at the Cape-based franchise.

“Allister Coetzee is focusing on the Stormers. [I am] definitely not involved or in the run in for the Bok job... and I'm sure whoever gets the job would be a good candidate," he said.

He did, however, acknowledge that he would not turn the opportunity down if it arrives in future.

"Every coach aspires to get involved at national level. I've been involved there, [but] if it's not your time, it's not your time," he said.

The Stormers start their Super Rugby preparations with a friendly against neighbours Boland in Wellington on Saturday.

The match will be the first of four pre-season outings for the Stormers before the Super Rugby season kicks off next month. They will play the Lions and the Cheetahs in a tri-series at the end of the month and will finish their pre-season preparations with a game against the EP Kings on February 11.

      Saffa - 2012-01-18 16:35

Ewan Mackenzie, John Mitchell, Wayne Smith......A girl can only dream.

      Deon - 2012-01-18 16:40

He would be a good candidate but he does not want it. The new coach might only get a 2 year contract.

  • Bennie - 2012-01-18 16:39

Leave John Mitchell out of it!! We need to win the S15 first!!

      Johan - 2012-01-19 08:20

  • Deon - 2012-01-18 16:41

Maybe in 10 years time, win a cub or 2 first.

      Saffa - 2012-01-18 16:45

      melt.vanaarde - 2012-01-28 13:26

Cant believe that there are actually people that would take that chance lol. Dumb

  • Johan - 2012-01-19 08:25

Dankie tog.

  • Patrick - 2012-01-19 08:26

    hahahaha, i love it!!!

  • Johan - 2012-01-19 08:34

Hy kannie eens die Currie Cup wen met n bok belaaide span. Wat gaan hy doen met nog extra bokke in die span? Seker nog 10 jaar bekerloos wees

  • Marius - 2012-01-19 14:01

    Excellent decision Coetzee...

  • Thomas - 2012-01-19 16:27

Don't rule him out...just yet. Smal supposedly also not available but apparently (according to the media) the leading candidate. Does ANYONE want the job? It will be an injustice if Meyer doesn't get it. However, despite the Bulls also having numerous Boks at their disposal, they also have failed to impress recently (CC and Super) despite Meyer's involvement.
