Team profile: The Dynamiters

Cape Town - The Dynamiters are the veterans - or “crocks” - section of Hamilton Sea Point RFC - South Africa’s oldest and proudest club!

The Hammies crocks teams went a bit quiet in the four or so years prior to 2006, but in that year they were revitalised under the name “the Dynamiters” which was born in the 70’s and 80’s and used in that era by Hammies crocks teams that went on many overseas tours.

In 2006 the new generation of Dynamiters toured Argentina and played in the Vintage veterans tournament there, and so the section found a new lease of life.

A competitive, but fun (and beer) loving bunch, the Dynamiters found an appetite for touring and played in the very competitive Dubai vets Tens in 2007 and then again in 2008. In both years they fell in the semi-finals, with the 2008 loss being inflicted by the self-same Christina Noble team that is playing in the 2012 CT Tens, and which boasted 400 odd Test caps at that time!

Undeterred, other tours were undertaken by the Dynamiters, notably in 2010 to the Kowloon (Hong Kong) social Tens which they won with a narrow final victory over a local team of Kiwi and Aussie ex-pats.

The next tour was in 2011, and was structured to follow the Hammies senior First team in their quest to defend their crown at the prestigious Melrose 7’s tournament in Scotland.

Melrose is the oldest 7’s tournament in the world, and they had added a veterans Tens section in 2008. Whilst Hammies Firsts just lost in the final to the local home team favourites, thus failing to defend their 2010 title, the Dynamiters turned the tables in the vets final and squeaked home against the Melrose Vets team which included the legendary Doddie Weir – all 7 foot of him!

The Dynamiters have played in every CT Tens tournament, and fielded two teams in the inaugural 2009 event. They lost in the 2009 and 2010 finals - both times to the SA Legends, but only made the quarter-finals last year, losing to Pukke Barbarians.

The reality of life is that they are ANOTHER year older (with most players now closer to their sixth or seventh attempt at retirement!), but the old bones will be dragged out onto the field once more for what promises to be an awesome 2012 CT Tens tournament!
