Butch set for Sharks return

Cape Town - Lions flyhalf Butch James is set to return to play for the Sharks which would delay his retirement until July next year.

The Springbok's career at the Lions looks likely to be over but according to the Sunday Times the 33-year-old could play one more season of Super Rugby for his old franchise in Durban.

"I haven’t signed yet," James was quoted as saying on Sunday. "It’s about 90% sure. I’ve been speaking to them and I’m keen to go. I’ll basically be the back-up flyhalf (to Patrick Lambie).

"Playing at 10 in this last Currie Cup just made me enjoy it again," said James. "I don’t want to in six months think I should have carried on playing. I won’t be able to come back then."

The 42-Test veteran has represented the Sharks, Bath (England) and Lions in his professional career.

I think he would be an awesome BACK-UP.

...Butch James much better than anti-dandruff shampoo Particia Lambie.. ..and overrated useless Elton Jantjies...

A lot experience from Butch, would be invaluable to Pat. Seemed to work for Jantjies this year

Nadine, don't feed the trolls. I think having Butch as a mentor will be great for Pat. He has been around the block and has buckets of experience, and will be great if he can share that.

      Haha, go Nadine!,!

desperate times calls for desperate measures!

Butch right now is probably the most composed kicker in S.A. next time look how easy he makes it not a big fan of Butch but few people remember what mark he made in the Heineken cup.....

      denny.cray - 2012-10-29 00:03

@Liveby - agreed. Since he got back from the UK I've been very impressed by his kicking. He seems to strike the ball really well with almost no hook/slice through the air.

For when it's confirmed - welcome back Butch!!

  • badladballie - 2012-10-28 20:46

I remember when players used to be loyal to their own province. Amazing how money changes people.

      lean.sadie - 2012-10-29 00:04

I Remember when playing well got you a spot in the top team. Apparently not.

      TravieGrif - 2012-10-29 08:59

Not sure what you mean, badlad. He is a Durban boy so just returning to his roots?

      donavan.boshoff - 2012-10-29 13:08

badlad suck it up china, the okes coming home and that makes me one stoked sharks fan

  • gwvickers - 2012-10-28 20:48

Stay were you are MR James, your time is up, as a die hard Shark fan, I can't see you coming back to a brilliant franchise, because the Lions don't have a place in super rugby

  • GavinPen - 2012-10-28 20:50

You have to be joking!! Why would the Sharks want the big ego'ed little turncoat back. Stay with the lions, or go back to Bath in the rain where you deserve to stay!!

  • gavin.simpson.0 - 2012-10-28 20:54

Well, he ain't frenchie..... eish, gonna miss Michelak.

  • reinie.brandt - 2012-10-28 21:44

Butch was a good flyhalf and a good servent for the Sharks. As a back with experience it would be useful, but we have enough backs. Sharks rugby needs bigger and better locks. This is the area that hurts the Sharks way too often. 4 months to super rugby!!!

      david.s.duncan.1 - 2012-10-28 23:35

Franco vd Merwe has signed up on loan, see how he does

  • Lana - 2012-10-28 22:08

Please don't sign, rather just go back to Bath, we'd rather have Freddie back!

      lean.sadie - 2012-10-29 00:07

Wait let me get this right. People say others shouldn't talk bad about Morne? But people do the same against Butch who actually won a World cup? Something Morne would never see by the way.

      TravieGrif - 2012-10-29 09:02

      I agree Lean.

  • Sammy Willow - 2012-10-28 22:16

he wanted to come back to the sharks after bath but they had the frenchie already and sharks were not offering him a contract hence the lions move, and yes, where are our locks, we need locks please send us locks Asap

      lean.sadie - 2012-10-29 00:07

      Funny stuff.
