Bulls make offer to Nienaber

2012-08-07 14:15

The Blue Bulls have set their sights firmly on former Springbok and current Stormers defensive coach Jacques Nienaber and have made a big offer to him to join their coaching ranks as from 2013.

According to SuperSport's website, Nienaber, widely acknowledged as one of the best defensive coaches in the world, has been the mastermind behind the Stormers' watertight defensive system but has not renewed his contract with Western Province and the Stormers, which comes to an end in October.

The Bulls recently lost their defensive coach John McFarland to the Springboks, along with forwards coach Johan van Graan, High Performance manager Ian Schwartz and conditioning coach Basil Carzils, and have been on the lookout to replace them with top-class candidates ever since.

With McFarland at the Boks, Nienaber was the obvious target as replacement, especially as has learnt he is keen to be closer to his father, who was injured in a home invasion attack recently in Potchefstroom.

The Bulls' Board of Directors have approved the approach and a formal offer has been made to Nienaber, who asked to be given time until after the Super Rugby tournament before making a decision.

It is understood the Bulls are currently awaiting his answer, but it has been delayed because of his possible involvement with the Springboks.

Despite McFarland’s presence, SA Rugby’s Director of coaching Rassie Erasmus is keen to apparently have Nienaber consult to the Springboks and it is understood that a counter offer is in the process of being finalised where Nienaber may spend part of his time with the Stormers and the rest with the Springboks.

However, Bulls CEO Barend van Graan offered a “no-comment” reply when asked about the offer to Nienaber, which would be a significant loss to the Stormers.

Whichever way Nienaber decides, it seems at this point his fulltime days at the Stormers may be numbered.

The Bulls' Board of Directors will also move to secure replacements for the other lost coaches, with Bok forwards coach Johan van Graan’s spot likely to be filled by former captain Victor Matfield.

Matfield has been the lineout consultant to the Bulls' Super Rugby team and is likely to take up the position as he wants to eventually move into fulltime coaching.

Carzil's position is likely to be filled by Stephen Plummer, who has already been working with the team for a few years now, with new conditioning coach Andre Volsteedt, son of Grey College principle Johan and former conditioning coach for the Sharks under-19 and under-21 sides, taking the other conditioning role in the side.

      carlos.pretorean - 2012-08-08 11:20

omw indeed bram - Nienaber is from Potch, so how exactly does that make him a born and bred stormer? Have you ever heard of professionalism??

  • steyts - 2012-08-07 14:27

WOW so next year the bulls WP clash will actually be two WP sides playing each other... Much like the cricket series in England being played between SA 1 and 2...

      jean.rossouwsa - 2012-08-07 14:35

And the Pretoria WP team will show the Capetown WP team HOW to win the cup.... again! hahaha

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-08-07 14:36

What position is Nienaber playing? He is clearly jumping 'flag' ship - wise man!!!

      jed.vonallemann - 2012-08-07 14:42

Taurus, jumping to a side that cant make a semi? Smart move.

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-08-07 14:49

vallem, at least he knows what he gets with the Bulls. A team that has tasted triumph a few times and will seek/fight for it again. I think 'choking' is not part of Nienaber's dna, or maybe he doesn't want to be associated with WP/Stormers, who knows?

      jed.vonallemann - 2012-08-07 14:53

Seeking and fighting does not mean doing, they have fell well short in the past 2 years, and let's be honest are at best a mid table side.

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-08-07 14:58

Time will tell @vallem, only time.

  • bootman.bokke - 2012-08-07 14:39

What will the Bulls supporters say now after lambasting the Stormers for their boring defense orientated game? Suddenly they want the man who engineered it.

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-08-07 14:51

@bootman, not at all! That was my first thought, but that will never happen, they simply replacing one coach with another. Nienaber DID everything at the Stormers whilst Fleck & kie did nothing.

      rinus.groeneveld.7 - 2012-08-07 14:56

Any team need to defend well but it must not be their only strategy! Just like "kick-and-chase" also does not work. You need a plan B and even C against specific opposition. And for that you need a decent head-coach ... something neither the Bulls nor the Stormers have....

      chris.groenewald.56 - 2012-08-07 15:39

Bootman, Bulle wil nie weer 2 x in een seisoen teen die Stormers verloor nie in 2013 soos in 2012 nie. Vodacom Cup en Coference Cup Champs!

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-08-11 05:46

Moron.. we have coaches that can do offense AND defense

  • rinus.groeneveld.7 - 2012-08-07 14:52

They should rather find someone to replace Ludeke. And Spies.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-08-07 15:05

And you as a supporter. Because you are absolutely hopeless.

      henco.swart - 2012-08-07 15:06

I aggree on Ludeke, but I believe that Spies will come right under a better coach...

      rinus.groeneveld.7 - 2012-08-07 15:15

Maybe Henco - he does perform a bit better under Heyneke for the Boks ... but under Ludeke guys like him and Morne Steyn and even Hougi's game is going only 1 way - South. And by South I'm not referring to the Stormers ... although it can be a good analogy! :-) You could see it after they spend a couple of weeks under Heyneke for the Boks - there was a definite improvement (Cheetahs). And then down-hill again culminating in 5 losses in just 7 games including being absolutely nowhere against the Sharks and the Crusaders who, in my opinion, was not spectacularly good this year.

      rinus.groeneveld.7 - 2012-08-07 15:18

      spent.... Just like Harold....

      BlouMasjien1 - 2012-08-07 15:18

@rinus, you are going to eat your words !

      Priesterb - 2012-08-07 15:27

rinus I think they should call on Nic M. Pine is just not good enough.......... substandard to the Bulls aspirations.

      rinus.groeneveld.7 - 2012-08-07 15:30

@Blou - when the Sharks came back from their overseas leg, I predicted that they will end well - even above the Bulls .. and I was crucified. I predicted that things will start falling apart the moment Heyneke (and more important, his coaching team, who have been making Ludeke look okay) leave for the Boks ... and we lost 5 out of the last 7 (and I do not think you can really count the wins against the Cheetahs and Lions at Loftus as serious wins). My next prediction - Bulls bottom 6 next year in S15. And I really really hope it is not the case ... but "kick-and-chase" is history and it is the ONLY pattern Ludeke knows. He "coached" the poor Lions into oblivion before he came to the Bulls. He ALWAYS had Heyneke's team AND the likes of Victor and Fourie to carry him. Spies is not a shadow of his former self and the Captaincy just inflates his ego even further and the players do not look up to him (inside knowledge) ... they are NOT a good combination (too much "church" - and I'm not attacking religion) and it is going to cost us dearly. Just like PDivvy and John Smit cost the Boks. And yes, it remains my OPINION. And I remain a Bulls supporter ... but a vey worried one..

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-08-07 15:38

Not one of us have ever seen you make a good comment regarding the Bulls. You suck. Rather go support the Stormers.

      rinus.groeneveld.7 - 2012-08-07 15:39

Priester - I like that idea.... what do you think is the FIRST thing he'll do!!??

      Priesterb - 2012-08-07 15:45

Ahhh rinus, I think he would kick Spies's ass!! Blou Bul Groete!

      BlouMasjien1 - 2012-08-07 15:49

Verlede jaar se CCUP was pateties en Pienaar was die oorsaak. Ek hoop van harte dat Nienaber die offer sal aanvaar en dat ons volgende jaar weer 'n krag sal wees. Blou Bul Groete!

      bootman.bokke - 2012-08-07 16:00

Jislaaik Blou Masjien...............You should read what you type before posting it. If you dont, it can make you look really stupid.

      rinus.groeneveld.7 - 2012-08-07 16:25

      Carel du Plessis perhaps?

      rinus.groeneveld.7 - 2012-08-07 16:28

And Carel was there for only one season ... and only had a 37% win rate, on the back of a Christie/Markgraaf. Mallet's success (71%) speaks for itself. There are only a few "natural" coaches who do not have to proof anything - Heyneke, White and Mallet....

      BlouMasjien1 - 2012-08-07 16:31

Jip Carel, die sneeu het my brein gevries

      bfvillet - 2012-08-07 16:52

rinus you also seem to be a sensible one could never fathom how or why you bought ludeke think a lot of your try scoring success has to do with pieter Rossouw therefore the rash of young backline talent from WP the last two years. You cannot always buy yourself out of trouble, i believe JJ Engelbrecht is a wing and not a centre and i hope he does not follow the same path as Sadie.

      bfvillet - 2012-08-07 16:55

Suggestion get pieter De Villiers BWAHAHA

      gert.malan.54 - 2012-08-07 17:03

I don't know what everybody's issue with Ludeke is. He is one of the most intelligent coaches around. Just take a look at some of the matches that the Bulls were outplayed in the first half and watch out for the difference when they come out after half time. What happened this year was under performance by the players. The coaching staff did what they could. Even against the Crusaders the second half started out better than any other stage of that match. The Bulls were just too far behind at that stage to be able to do anything about the 'Saders' dominance.

      rinus.groeneveld.7 - 2012-08-07 17:17

Short memory Bloues ... and I quote: "The Cats have lost four of their opening five matches in the tournament, scoring just two tries and shipping in a whopping 146 points to the 59 they have scored. The Sunday Times reports that most thought Friday’s embarrassing 50-3 loss in Sydney meant Ludeke’s job was on the line, but Turner denied it." and "Ludeke's sacking comes on the back of the Cats poor showing in the Super 14 where the Cats just managed to evade the wooden spoon ending in 13th position — one spot ahead of the bottom team the Western Force. The Cats managed to win only two of their 14 matches with one ending in a draw." And just after that he gets "rewarded" by getting an appointment as Bulls head coach - and they had just won the S14 under Heyneke. This was 2006/2007 - he has managed to "ride the wave" well with a decent structure and continuity in players. 2011 started going downhill, 2012 ended in a mess. 2013 will get him fired. Mark my words...

      BlouMasjien1 - 2012-08-07 17:22

Ek sal more volledige stats gee - 2012-08-08 07:48

@ rinus-PDV got one of the best records,he's the only coach to beat the all blacks three times in a year and he's the only SA coach post-'92 to beat the ab's twice in their backyard,he also wins the lions which du plesis could'nt do and ppl blame B Lawrenence for WC failure. So why not kept him like nz did with G Henry after the 2007 Wayne Barnes incident and there is no such thing as having another man's team.

  • andre.stols.581 - 2012-08-07 14:57

the stormers do not know how to attack and only attack brings points on the board-the bulls must get 2 proper props and start where rugby starts and that is to secure 1st phase by scrum, scrum and scrum again. Then they must get 2 strong locks(like Bakkies or Etsebeth)who can help the props to strongly scrum, scrum and scrum again-what part of this message do the Bulls not understand?-wow,guys!!!!

  • viva.lebok - 2012-08-07 15:17

@ visser isak: Two weeks ago many of the stormers supporters were saying that the Stormers play defending rugby because of Nienaber and that he should go. Now that the Bulls have made him an offer its hands off. You guys must make up your mind. By the wat Nienabder was with the cheetahs before being poached by the Stormers so I guess if the Stormers can do it, then so can the Bulls. Oh, and by the way, Nienaber is not from cape Town, he is originally a lot closer to Pretoria.

  • stompies.hattingh.5 - 2012-08-07 16:01

      viva.lebok - 2012-08-09 11:39

The Bulls lost all their top coches except Ludeke, which certainly affected the progress during the competition. Just look at how they started the season and how they ended it. Coaching making a hige difference. I would even want Mcfarland to return to the Bulls and Nienaber to go with the Boks.

  • bfvillet - 2012-08-07 16:14

well done bulls you have probably just moved the stormers from this defensive approach can you now make an offer for Peter Grant, Joe Pietersen and Brok Harris

      rinus.groeneveld.7 - 2012-08-07 17:02

I think the Stormers will have to make us an offer to take those 3 - maybe a buy 1 like Eben and get 3 free? I have questioned many of Heyneke's picks but after watching the game against the Blues at Newlands and again the semis against the Sharks, I understand 100% why he does not even mention Grant's name...

      bfvillet - 2012-08-07 17:28

would not buy anything youv`e got but glad to see that you still want more of our players. you guys are the only one`s doing a lot of panick shopping right now.
