According to the supersport.com website, Gerber, who rejoined the Blue Bulls after a two year stint at Stade Francais, has been used sparingly and has yet to make an appearance in the Currie Cup squad after being used mostly at Vodacom Cup level this season.
With the Bulls using Frik Kirsten at tighthead, Gerber’s chances of playing were virtually non-existent, hence the decision to move elsewhere.
The Bulls have already lost one tighthead this season with Rossouw de Klerk moving to Free State, but have signed the promising former Paarl Boys High and Cheetah tighthead Marcel van der Merwe as his replacement.
The other tighthead prop in the group is Springbok Werner Kruger.
While the Bulls are still to confirm his departure, his agent made the announcement on Twitter on Thursday morning.
Gerber will leave immediately and join up with his Italian club, as the Bulls have apparently agreed to release him, even though his contract only ends in October.
