Brummer out in the wilderness

Cape Town - Former Blue Bulls flyhalf Francois Brummer is searching for a new rugby team after he failed to obtain a contract at the Eastern Province Kings.

Brummer's contract at the Bulls was not renewed at the end of the 2011 season and Die Burger newspaper was reliably informed that Brummer was interested in playing for the Port Elizabeth-based outfit.

However, the Kings weren't interested as they already have five No 10's on their books. Louis Strydom is their No 1 pivot, with Monty Dumond, George Whitehead, Shane Gates and Matthew Tayler-Smith the others in the squad.

Most South African teams have already saturated their budgets for next year, which could see the 22-year-old Brummer heading overseas in an attempt to spark new life in a once-promising career.

Dumond fell out of favour at the Kings earlier this year and was loaned to Griquas for the second part of this season. He is still contracted to Kings but they have apparently had serious talks with him about his future. He hasn't fulfilled his potential, with his poor tactical kicking dragging his game down. He is, however, a good attacking pivot and can also be used at fullback.

Kings coach Alan Solomons rates Whitehead highly and he can also play in the No 15 jersey. Gates and Taylor-Smith could also be used as inside centres.

Gates played for EP's Under-21 side at flyhalf this year after he played inside centre for the Under-19 team last year.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
