Mvovo first try delight

Adnaan Mohamed

London – Springbok wing Lwazi Mvovo says his first try for the Boks was a very special moment in his career and it came just at the right time in the South Africa’s 21-11 victory over England on Saturday.

The 24-year-old from Umtata in the Eastern Cape only started playing rugby at the age of 17, and said his meteoric rise to the top has come as a result of the faith put in him at the Sharks.

“To come here and win at Twickenham was something special, and to score a try was the cherry on top,” a delighted Mvovo said on Saturday.

“Ruan (Pienaar) was at the ruck. They (England) were about to turn the ball over so I was also there at the ruck to help to clean. Juan (Smith) told me to get back. I fell back and saw there was space on the left side. I just called for the ball and the gap just opened in front of me,” he explained.

“I think I scored 12 tries in the Currie Cup this year, but my 13th was quite special because scoring at that stage put our side in an advantageous position. It was one of the greatest feelings of my life. I couldn’t really describe the feeling in words. It was a very emotional moment,” he said.

The powerful Sharks winger believes it was part of England’s game plan to bombard the Bok wings with high cross kicks because they are a bit shorter than their English counterparts.

“We knew it was going to come and decided beforehand to work together as a back three to prevent them from scoring tries in this way. I think it worked for us today.”

Mvovo says a few scoring opportunities went a begging in the first half, but they managed to set the record straight in the second.

“It is all part of the game and you sometimes make mistakes. But the most important thing is how you react from making those mistakes. At the end of the day we pulled ourselves together and did what was required to win the game,” he added.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
