Kirchner gets fullback nod

2009-11-10 12:42

Toulouse - The Springbok starting XV to face France in Toulouse on Friday shows four changes from the run-on XV that did duty in the Boks’ final Tri-Nations encounter against the All Blacks in Hamilton in September.

Bokday is back!

Zane Kirchner, who made his debut in the third and final Test against the British & Irish Lions in July, returns at fullback in place of Frans Steyn, who is currently playing in France, whilst at wing, JP Pietersen, who was injured in the first away match of the Tri-Nations in Perth, returns in place of Odwa Ndungane.

Centre Adi Jacobs and No 8 Ryan Kankowski, who were on the bench in Hamilton, have been promoted to the starting line-up in the place of Jean de Villiers (overseas) and Pierre Spies (injured) respectively.

Danie Rossouw and Ruan Pienaar are only other survivors from the bench in Hamilton, with five changes being made. Lock Andries Bekker, who was also injured in the Perth Test, makes a return as does centre Wynand Olivier, who last warmed the bench for the All Black Test in Bloemfontein in July.

Adriaan Strauss, who has played five Tests to date, replaces Chiliboy Ralepelle at hooker and CJ can der Linde takes the place of Jannie du Plessis at tighthead. Loosehead Wian du Preez, who was called up along with Strauss and Van der Linde this week, is also among the reserves.

Du Preez is the only uncapped player in the 22. Van der Linde, a veteran of 56 Tests, last played for the Boks in August 2008 whilst Strauss’ last appearance was in July 2008.

“The core of the match did duty during the Tri-Nations campaign and will provide us with stability going into this tough opening Test,” said Springbok coach Peter de Villiers.

“There are a lot of experienced players in the starting XV as well as on the bench which will be important to our continuity as well as to ensuring that we maintain our structures and play the way we want to.

“I have full confidence in the new players who will be starting on Friday, they have shown their qualities before and we have to make sure we get the best out of them. The three newcomers are all good players in their own right. CJ is very experienced whilst both Adriaan and Wian have been part of the squad previously,” De Villiers said.

Just a bit worried about AD at 12, but other than that, a strong team and bench...Go Bokke !!!!

  • Andy - 2009-11-10 13:09

A great team, although I believe Kirchner will never be more than a good fullback in a strong Super 14 side. I'd rather play Riaan Viljoen, who had a stormer of a season in an avg side. Hopefully the scrum will do better than Friday Nights mess.

  • Etienne - 2009-11-10 13:09

I still have only one question to Peter De Villiers. Where the hell is WP NEL who scrummed Guthro Steenkamp in his glory? How blind must you be, not to call him up?

  • Go Bokke - 2009-11-10 13:10

Very Good.....lets hope Adi Jacobs gets injured somewhere in the locker room before the game!!! Where is Earl Rose????

  • WEzO - 2009-11-10 13:10

GO BOKKE!!! team looks good. but obviously im just waiting for all the negative comments to come. support the boys SA!!

  • province boy - 2009-11-10 13:11

pretty decent side besides the inclusion of jacobs and zane kirchner! pdv will soon realise that he will have to rethink his policy of overseas players as jean de villiers and frans steyn are going to be sorely missed

  • Fatman - 2009-11-10 13:12

A good team except for the monkey in the mid field by the name of Adi Jacobs...why on earth does PdV persist with him??!! He's crap! The French loosies and midfield are going to make mincemeat of him.

  • province boy - 2009-11-10 13:12

pretty decent side besides the inclusion of jacobs and zane kirchner! pdv will soon realise that he will have to rethink his policy of overseas players as jean de villiers and frans steyn are going to be sorely missed

  • Gaz - 2009-11-10 13:12

Still a very powerfull side but not sure about Adi Jacobs - Poor form of late! Would rather have chosen Wynand Olivier - reads the game far better! But good luck guys - we watching you!

  • Shaun - 2009-11-10 13:16

I would have played blondie at inside centre. The only change I would make to the team. GO BOKKE!!!

  • Geejay - 2009-11-10 13:17

Well my favourite all time player Danie Roussouw (even though I'm a Stormers supporter :) ) is in so now we have that extra power,(thanks Freestate) dedication and professioanlism we are going to need in the last 30. I think with this front row the French are going to be left wanting. Have no problem with AD he is a solid citizen, still like De Jongh though.

  • Gerald - 2009-11-10 13:18

Look Adi isn't bad, if Olivier was injured I would say sure play him... but Olivier is just a stronger defender and in Test matches that extra bit often will prove the difference. This falls into the category of "acceptable risk to achieve AA goals" for the coach - which is ridiculous.

  • Francois - 2009-11-10 13:18

    ADI JACOBS!!!!!!

  • ps in CT - 2009-11-10 13:20

shud have had Pienaar 15, WO 12, Adi & Kirchner on the bench. Also Deysel instead of Bekker on the bench. Then we would have good chance against frogs. With this team we will struggle cause nobody trusts Adi's defence so have to cover more. Not good, not good......

  • GeePMB - 2009-11-10 13:25

Still not yet convinced about Kirchner. He palyed poorly against the British Lions, Has had a good Currie Cup though and hopefully he will be less nervous this time around. As for Adi? Eish I am an out and out Shark supporter but still do not believe that Adi is playing well enough to retain his bok spot. Hopefully he is over his shoulder injury and will come back into form in this match. On the whole though, at least the team hasn't been changed from it's previous winning formula and all things being equal, the Frogs will be no match for us on Saturday! GO BOKKE!!

  • alchemist - 2009-11-10 13:28

Now that is a proper SPRINGBOK side (bench and all) - POWER with PANACHE and PLAYERS who have EARNED the right to be capped a SPRINGBOK..........YOU WILL CLIP LE BLEU's wings and would properly TAME A TIGER (if you had the chance )................. YEBO BOKKE !!!

  • vivian malema - 2009-11-10 13:29

against leicester the two best players on the field were earl rose and ashley johnstone, yet theyre not in the test 22!!! we all know what its about. earl is by far a better player than steyn at flyhalf and johnston is currently on better form than kankowski. why is devon raubenheimer not in schalk`s place--he is fitter at the moment. this whole thing is so sickening me!!!

  • The Oracle - 2009-11-10 13:30

Good team and well done Kirchner. Would have loved to see Meyer Bosman next to Jaque Fourie...

  • Richard - 2009-11-10 13:31

Adi Jacobs - what has he done to deserve selection? What a weak point for the French to fire at.

  • henzel - 2009-11-10 13:31

Adi julle mal? Wat van Earl Rose? Gee hom net 'n kans asseblief!!!!!!! Olivier moes ook in die begin 15 gewees het. Ons gaan op ons moer kry met die span!

  • Koedoe Van Kimberley - 2009-11-10 13:32

@Ettiene 1:09pm. Did you see this alledged incident on your Play Station?Should'nt you still be at school at 1:09PM ?????

  • junsau - 2009-11-10 13:34

The best fullback we have in the country at the mo. Will be starting training with the stormers soon... Joe this ones for you... Wynand is not a better centre than AD. At the mo AD is the best that we have. Wynand cannot attack better than AD can. The centre position is just being warmed up for mr De Jongh.

  • province boy - 2009-11-10 13:38

vivian what are you smoking? your granny's socks? in what world is earl rose better than morne steyn! and that davon raubenheimer comment is just stupid. and schalk deserves his place

  • JJR - 2009-11-10 13:39

Leave the taem as it is the are all good players and the impact players are there to show the can do it for SA GO-BOKKE

  • hans - 2009-11-10 13:40

Ai Vivian - only with a surname like Malema can you say that Earl Rose is better at fly half than Morne

  • Idiot- Vivian Malema - 2009-11-10 13:40

If you know nothing about rugby please dont comment.... Seriously your case in point is pathetic..

  • Neel@9 - 2009-11-10 13:42

Is jy seker jou naam is nie dalk Juluis nie????????.

  • elk - 2009-11-10 13:43

Team OK. Weakish spots are Adi Jacobs and Zane Kirchner. Would have like Deysel on the bench.

  • D the M - 2009-11-10 13:43

Can't really complain too much about the side - its pretty much what we all expected, even if it is not the best 15 we have...I can complain about the other comments though ;) @vivian, what are you smoking?? Yes I think Ashley Johnstone (spelling?) has a future, but rose isn't good enough for a 5th place lions side without ludik and pretorious - how is he good enough for the springboks? Sure he did alright against leicester - a club side without 13 first choice players - but he looked good because everyone else played awfully! I think Adi would make an awesome super sub, he is naturally creative and a good line breaker when fresh - but our gameplan doesn't revolve around either of those things, so rather play a bigger tackler like wynand... my two cents, waiting for the retorts :P

  • JS - 2009-11-10 13:45

ADI JACOBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Snorre must be joking again, Wynand Olivier is for sure better than him, must be AA in Action

  • @viviqn - 2009-11-10 13:45

Devon fitter than Schalk? hmm ja whatever. Devon was an absolute shocker - invisible against Leicester. Earl better than Morne? Give me some of the stuff you are smoking with Earl! He had an ok game against Leicester - but would never bet able to sink the penalties Morne does. Ashley Johnson may warrant a place soon - but at the moment Kanko is there - he has done nothing to lose his place. The rest of the team is good. Your comment just SCREAMS racist undertones - who are you trying to fool here? Yourself only.

  • Ronnie - 2009-11-10 13:46

AD is a class player and has proven himself already..Form is temp class is permanent..Why the hell is that useless Ruan Pienaar in the squad?Oh I know

  • phil - 2009-11-10 13:46

I think Adi will be protected by the loose trio. Our "rush" defense was created to protect our smaller wings: Paulse and ealy on Habana. I hope PDV has a similar idea by using Brussow, Burger and Ryan. (The English tried to keep Jonny away from the action against Aus by having him lie deeper.) Adi seems to pass more than Wynand, which means Jaque would have had to look for work with Wynand on the inside.

  • Yvevou - 2009-11-10 13:46

Vivian Malema-With a name like this, one cannot expect an intelligent comment, the name says it all !!! You should rather watch your great Bafana soccer team and leave rugby alone as you clearly DON'T know what the hell you are talking about.I think that you will do well in Woodwork as you have a wooden brain.

  • ET1 - 2009-11-10 13:47

Vivian, I tend to agree with you that Johnstone played an awesome game, and deserves a chance, but Rose better than Steyn? Have you even been watching rugby this year? At all? It's clear "what it's about" for you...

  • Say what... - 2009-11-10 13:51

Bet you Adi and Zane are replaced before half time by Ruan and Wynand. Everyone happy, quotas sorted, team up to full strength etc.

  • Lionel Kemm - 2009-11-10 13:52

This whole politic setup is sickening, some players that can't even make there provincial sides but are in the Bok touring squad, its sad,Adi Jacobs are you going out with Pieter De Villiers's daughter??????This Vivian woman(if that)obviously knows nothing about rugby, stick to soccer!!!!!!

  • Erwin - 2009-11-10 13:54

@ Vivian - Please tell me you are joking. If not, then clearly you know nothing about this game and the players and should rather keep your comments to yourself. Rose better then Steyn & Devon in place of Schalk???? Are you MAD!! I would have no problem with Ashley being on the bench, but for your other 2 suggestions, please rather keep silly comments like that under your hat. GO BOKKE!!

  • chameleon - 2009-11-10 13:54

eish, i'm a bit worried about 15, 12 and 3. those are clearly compromises and are decisions based on the wrong reasons. zane is overrated, ad is too whimsical and john talks nice but scrums poorly. i am however a fan of div's quirky calls and hope all these players surprise me. laat waai bokke!

  • Springbokfan100% - 2009-11-10 14:02

Some of these comments are hilarious Morne Steyn has by far been the best flyhalf in the country. his kicking record speaks for himself almost 100%. and some of you want to put Earl Rose at flyhalf. Good job PdV givng the guys of the future a chance to live the springbok culture and learn from the experienced players.

  • Whitelightning - 2009-11-10 14:02

@ vivian malema, apologies to you the guys here are uptight can't take a wum.

  • Thabo Malema - 2009-11-10 14:03

This team is almoust lilly white but for 2 or 3 players of colour

  • peter - 2009-11-10 14:05

The plan is for the French to attack the no.12 channel of Adi Jacobs,so that Heinrich Brussow and Schalk Burger can defend it and turn the ball over to counter attack from....have you no clue with regards to strategy? have you boys never been in battle? Feign weakness, then use it to your strengths.....relax..

  • me2 - 2009-11-10 14:05

Rugby is not a sport for Dutchmen only..Why is there a problem everytime a non white gets selected , then its AA..Its crap.Just get over it.Not long ago many of these doom prophets postings here said the same about PDV.and now PDV is the best..bunch of hypocrits..Needles to say he proved everybody just get over it and look beyond the colour issue.

  • Jaco - 2009-11-10 14:05

@Vivian Malema - I hope you are kidding us - that must be the biggest load of crap I've ever read!

  • Mike - 2009-11-10 14:10

Let's try be gracious and loyal for a change. I think the team looks good, no exceptions, go get 'em bokke!

  • Thabo Malema - 2009-11-10 14:11

Please uncle, can you do something about this injust of the past

  • JJ - 2009-11-10 14:13

Whenever there is a player of colour in the Bok squad, people are not happy...I guess all the "white" players in SA are in form and capable to be a Bok...Adi, Earl, Ricky,Chilliboy, Maku and now poor Davon are the most hated rugby players in SA...I wonder why? Are black players only good enough to play as wings (Habana, JP, Odwa, Akona, Jongi,Chester (95)...All you rugby gurus and intellects please tell me when will players of colour be gud enough and in what positions? Rugby in SA= white boys playing and rolloing around with the ball and then give to black player to run like Kunta Kente (Roots)...

  • Neutral Observer - 2009-11-10 14:14

    1. Mtawarira, 2. Maku, 3. Mujati, 4. Van Heerden, 5. Hlongwane, 6. Tybelika, 7. Raubenheimer, 8. Mokoena, 9. Adams, 10. Rose, 11. Nokwe, 12. Jacobs, 13. Murray, 14. Ndungane, 15. Kirchener. And on the bench we have: 16. Rallepele, 17. Sepakha, 18. Johnson, 19. Mabeta, 20. January, 21. Vulindlu, 22. Ndungane. Problem solved!

  • neels - 2009-11-10 14:14

yes Thabo Malema lilly white at least they win some games and world cubs not like the picth black soccer guys
