Beast cleared to tour

2009-11-07 18:00

Johannesburg - Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira has been cleared to tour with the Springbok squad following productive discussions between the South African Rugby Union (SARU) and the Sports Ministry.

SARU was alerted to clauses in the National Sport & Recreation Amendment Act, 2007, which needed to be completed before Zimbabwean-born Mtawarira’s place in the end-of-year tour squad could be confirmed.

“We are delighted with the news after discovering this problem during the week,” said Mr Oregan Hoskins, president of SARU.

“The government has been very helpful in expediting the completion of the necessary protocols and we’re all relieved that Beast will be available for selection for the Springboks against France in Toulouse on Friday.”

The protocol revolved around clause 6(3) of the National Sport and Recreation Amendment Act of 2007, which requires an explanation to the Minister of Sport for the selection of non-South African nationals.

Beast only needs to pay R150 to the SA border police at beit bridge and he can get whatever clearance he wants!

  • jorene - 2009-11-07 18:26

Very good news. He is one of my favourite players.

  • Ex-Zimbo now SAFFA to - 2009-11-07 18:51

As if this is his first cap! Seems Minister of Sport is looking to divert attention from the ASA saga. If he is a citizen by naturalisation, what difference does it make?

  • Simon - 2009-11-07 19:18

@GT because he is famous I think he would be expected to pay R1500.00 at least.

  • Player 23 - 2009-11-07 19:33

Tendai Mtawarira, plays with as much, if not more passion, than some of the other players!!! He is great for rugby in South Africa and should receive an honorary citizenship!

  • rey - 2009-11-07 19:55

I named my race horse after him..he is my second favourite rugby player..go Beast.

  • Joe - 2009-11-07 20:38

what?? how on earth can a non south african play for the national side. kick him out. let him play for zimbabwe!

  • clinton - 2009-11-07 20:46

O this needs the minister of sports attention way much more than the fact that they over look corrupt, power hungry mongrels that runs sporting codes into the grounds like ASA and SAFA. Pathetic, childish.

  • denise - 2009-11-07 21:01

The Beast is the best !!! If anything happened & we lost him......don't want to even go there...........

  • Andre - 2009-11-07 21:06

    Go Beast!!! Maake us proud

  • Ruan - 2009-11-07 21:25 hell with clause 6(3)'s a man who plays as a prof.....representing S.A....what about all the refugees-/ asylum seekers flocking to our country....hey, Beast...i'm not a rich man...but i'll personally make a contribution in order for you to become a s.a citizen.....c'mon....The B-E-A-S-T.....!!

  • Zimbo - 2009-11-07 21:30

Awesome! The Beast from 'bubwe gets to represent the Bokke! Great news - I'm a great fan of this wonderful player. Weird how Jean can't play though... even though he's a citizen by birth but chooses to play overseas to bolster both his bank and talent accounts?

  • Tackler - 2009-11-07 21:45

Another bungle by officials! Will we ever be free of the scourge of fat cat officials drawing huge pay cheques and not doing their jobs properly. How did he earn his first cap, pray tell me? Parasites the lot of them. Now the 'social engineering' experiment by P de V by taking wannabe Springboks on tour is about to backfire as well. Come back Jake White, all is for given....

  • denis - 2009-11-07 22:11

The explanation must have become a lot more obvious after Friday's match - "Please Mr Minister, we need to include some match-fit front row forwards who deserve their place on merit."

  • muscles - 2009-11-07 22:58

Zimbo: He basically gave SA the 2 fingers for more money clearly he would rather make money than develop the country so good riddance... oh wait there is a million of us expats doing the same thing

  • Tommygun - 2009-11-08 03:04

If Bafana, Bafana had a fraction of the passion for their National Colours as the Beast has for his Bok colours, they would at least have drawn with Iceland.Typical of these politicians while being a government in excile they could do miricles, but now they are on the field like Bafana, they are total failures.

  • chris - 2009-11-08 06:56

@ joe joe poepol, the beast is the best los hom uit BBBEEEEAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTTT FOR EVER

  • joe - 2009-11-08 11:15

I hope that someone asks the minister what he was aimed to achieve by this ridiculous move on his part. He also needs to explain how the Beast was allowed to play in the first place if he did not meet the requirements of the law. Fire the minister I say and leave Beast alone.

  • rugbymad - 2009-11-09 07:27

I noticed that Google is celebrating the anniversary of the Muppet show. Seems like our Minister is doing the same thing! Buster you are a paid servant in our beautiful country. Get on with the job you are paid to do, if not, join your comrades & just pretend to be busy. Beast is King!!!

  • Whitelightning - 2009-11-09 09:20

AG not this government bashing sh*t again from you one eyed fools the problem didn't start from government. It was start by your beloved inconsistent IRB administrator. Please do some research before you comment on something it will save you same embarrassment.

  • Dean - 2009-11-09 10:03

G's joe you call yourself a SouthAfrican and only heard the Beast is not South African now?? That boy plays with South African heart and a love for rugby we lucky we have him playing for us he makes a huge contribution to our team. You obviously dont known much about SA rugby so rather dont comment!

  • Dave - 2009-11-09 11:04

@ Joe - why not go play in the traffic you chop!! Glad he is back in the fold, we need him more than ever as was seen on Friday.

  • Ross - 2009-11-09 11:33

Oh my god that has to be the biggest load of Sh*t i have ever heard of!! he played int eh world cup and they are only seing it now, give me a break. He is an amazing player, i personally think they are trying to squeeze raalephelle( excuse the spelling) in there?

  • BEEAAAST - 2009-11-09 13:27

this is utterly nonsense... This gov'ment is really taking the piss. They are trying to exercise their muscles on dumb things. People like Corne Krige & Gary Teichmann have served the national team with pride. Why all of a sudden (after a couple of caps) do they find it necessary to complain about THE BEAST? They really need to get a life and move on. Focus on getting the soccer right. Fire the brazilian coaches and get a South African in there. Maybe if Julius Malema said something about the benefits of the Beast, then they'll leave him alone. I'm really disappointed.

  • Pieter - 2009-11-09 14:00

The problem is that the beast is still traveling on 'n zimbabe passport. That is why there is questions. SA rugby should have sorted that out long ago.
