2. Battle of The Sexes (2017)
What’s this movie is about: Emma Stone plays real-life character, Billie Jean King, a formidable tennis player who made history in a 1973 showdown against Bobby Riggs that not only changed the status quo (somewhat) for women in Tennis but also for equality in pay for women, as well as L.G.B.T. rights.
Why it’s great to watch with your daughter: The entire movie is so well done that you can often see and feel the raw emotions (both the triumphant joy and bitter frustration) on the face of a strong player like Billie Jean.
In the movie, Billie Jean breaks the boundaries and it’s an opportunity to bring up the subject of being free to be yourself (even if that self is not the norm in society).
3. The Long Run (2001)
What’s this movie is about: South African award-winning actress, Nthati Moshesh plays a young Namibian runner, Christine, who is not only running from authorities (she is in South Africa illegally) but also her running coach who pushes her to the brink to win the race he never could, the Comrades marathon.
Why it’s great to watch with your daughter: Preparation is not just physical, it’s also about mental strength. This story shows that as an athlete you will be pushed to almost breaking point (like only a marathon can), at which point you’ll want to give up - that’s when its most important to keep going – at least if you want to win.
4. Bend It Like Beckham (2000)
What’s this movie is about: The daughter (Parminder Nagra) of a strict Indian couple in London, who is not allowed to play organised soccer bends not only her parents’ rules of but those of the soccer industry’s as a whole and turns out to be a pretty great player.
Why it’s great to watch with your daughter: If you’re into soccer/ football, you’re most likely to enjoy as much as your athlete daughter (if not more). An English teen movie that launched Kiera Knightley’s career and was even turned into a west end musical you’ll enjoy seeing the tackles and the goals – some of which are really pro-like standards. Turn up the sound on this one and enjoy the hits from the 2000’s.
5. Million Dollar Baby (2009)
What’s this movie is about: Hilary Swank plays a female boxer who teams up with an aging trainer to take a shot at being a champion in this award-winning film.
Why it’s great to watch with your daughter: You could watch this movie purely for the sterling performances and heart-wrenching storyline – not to mention the nail-biting boxing action. But it tackles some serious issues against the back drop of a physically demanding and intense sport, something that may open the doors to conversation with your daughter. You might also find you’ll enjoy this movie more now (in 2018) because you can see the shadows of the dark scenes more clearly on a better quality TV.
