Top 5 must-watch weekend sporting events

Cape Town -  It's the weekend!

But the sporting world never sleeps, so hang on tight and be sure to watch these FIVE events!

1. Wimbledon

It's crunch time at the All England Club!

With defending champion Garbine Muguruza out, the woman's Wimbledon title is wide open with Serena Williams determined to prove critics wrong and Simona Halep wanting to cement her top spot.

While over for the men's, Roger Federer is favourite to defend his title but world No 1 and long-time rival Rafael Nadal is on the Swiss' tail.

And let's not forget South Africa's very own Kevin Anderson.

2. Tour de France

The 105th edition of the Tour de France begins this weekend!

On Saturday from nearby Noirmoutier-en-Isle, the TDF starts for an epic 21-day slog around France where Britain's Chris Froome is favourite to win.

But will the doping controversy overshadow the defending champion?

And how will South Africa's Team Dimension Data perform this season? Watch all the action from 10:50 SA time.

3. British Grand Prix

Start your engines! 

The Formula One circus roars into Silverstone this weekend with all eyes on the battle between Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton and

Vettel will be looking to extend his lead in the drivers championship standings, while Hamilton is favourite to win at home.

And let's not overlook the ever-improving Max Verstappen...

The main race begins on Sunday at 15:10 SA time.

4. Super Rugby

Round 18 of the Super Rugby action gets under way.

On Saturday, Chiefs host the Brumbies (07:15 SA time), Hurricanes take on the Blues (09:35 SA time) and the Waratahs battle the Sunwolves (11:45 SA time).

Back in South Africa, the out-of-form Bulls tackle the Jaguares in Pretoria (15:05) and we end off the weekend with the Stormers end the Sharks' Super Rugby campaign at Newlands (17:15).

5. Soccer World Cup

We're down to the last eight in Russia!

Things are heater up (if they weren't hot already) and this weekend's fixtures will keep you glued to your screen. 

On Friday, Uruguay battle against France (16:00 SA time) and favourites Brazil take on Belgium (20:00 SA time).

On Sunday, Sweden look to upset Gareth Southgate's England (16:00 SA time) and then hosts Russia look to advance through the the semi-finals when they play Croatia (20:00 SA time).

Who will reign supreme? Will we see any upsets? All these questions and more will be answered on Sport24...
