Daily sports briefs | Drew Brees draws heavy fire from team-mates, 'Blackout Tuesday' gets widespread support, Cristiano Ronaldo tops Instagram lockdown money list - and more!
UNSAINTLY DREW DRAWS HEAVY FIRE FROM TEAM-MATES AND SPORTS STARS
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has drawn stinging criticism from team-mates and sports stars alike for his insensitive comments toward the peaceful "taking the knee" protest.
"I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country," Brees said.
Responses from his own team-mates ranged from "Shut the f..k up!" to "Ignorant" and also triggered backlash from other NFL players including legendary Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers. LeBron James weighed in too with "WOW MAN!" followed by an explanation of why the knee protest is not disrespectful to the country.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: Where to even start with this one! That has to go down as one of Brees' worst passes of all time. His ignorance and lack of understanding deserves all the criticism it gets. As the leader of his team, it is hard to see how he will be able to unite the locker room after comments like that. Expect the repercussions to escalate.
"BLACKOUT TUESDAY" GETS WIDESPREAD SUPPORT
Social media's "Blackout Tuesday" campaign in protest against racism and police brutality gained global support among sports stars and teams across the globe. Among those to send a blacked out Instagram post where Siya Kolisi, LeBron James, Steph Curry, Steven Gerrard, Marcus Rashford, a host of UFC fighters, NFL players, NBA stars and football teams ... the list is too long to mention all.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: Hopefully this will bring some positive change as the movement gains momentum and dominates sports headlines.
"INSTA" SPORTS LOCKDOWN MONEY LIST
Cristiano Ronaldo tops the Instagram earnings during lockdown among sports stars, raking in £1.8m (R38m) for four Instagram posts! With 219 million followers, CR7 earns an estimated £470k per post. DAMN! Lionel Messi comes in second with £1.3m followed by Neymar, Shaq O'Neal, David Beckham and Virat Kohli. The remainder of the top 10 is filled by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Dwayne Wade, Dani Alves and Anthony Joshua with the data compiled from 12 March - 14 May.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: Welcome to the new age of advertising where it is estimated you can earn approximately 6c (SA) per follower. At that rate, and with my current following, I wouldn't be able to buy an illicit loose cigarette during lockdown.
