Daily sports briefs | Nice guys do finish first in the UFC, Tyson unleashes fury on Wilder money claim - and more!
NICE GUYS CAN FINISH FIRST
In a bizarre and somewhat controversial main event of UFC Fight Night 171, Glover Teixeira was overheard APOLOGISING to opponent Anthony Smith for the beating that he was administering to him. With no fans in the arena, the mics picked up the following exchange between the two in the middle of a vicious ground and pound.
“Sorry Anthony, part of the job.”
“You what?”
“Part of the job.”
“Yeah, it is what it is.”
During a fight that many observers believed should have been stopped earlier, Smith appeared to hand over one of his teeth to the referee and complained to his corner that his teeth were falling out.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: A refreshing take from Glover which contrasts with the likes of Jorge Masvidal who bludgeons opponents and then verbally abuses them while out cold.
TYSON UNLEASHES FURY ON WILDER MONEY CLAIM
Tyson Fury has dismissed Deontay Wilder's offer of a $10m payout to release the rematch clause in their contract to allow Fury a money-spinning title fight with Anthony Joshua.
“Well, Wilder’s got a rematch clause. Some newspaper reported that he wants $10 million to step aside,” Fury said via Instagram.
“I’m not paying him no money to step aside. I’d rather take his skull again. I’ll break him in the ring and then I’ll get him out the way."
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: Well that clears that up then!
SCOTTISH PREMIER LEAGUE SET FOR CANCELLATION?
The Daily Mail is reporting that a crucial Zoom meeting between SPFL clubs scheduled for this afternoon is likely to result in the SPFL season being cancelled and Celtic crowned champions.
This would result in relegation for Hearts and some unhappy TV broadcasters. It would also likely add to the increasing pressure on the EPL to follow suit. A number of Premier League stars have voiced their concerns over a restart.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: It seems strange that some leagues find it impossible to complete the season behind closed doors while others, such as the Bundesliga, are proceeding as planned. At this point it's a 50/50 bet on whether the EPL will continue or not. My money is on them proceeding but my betting form hasn't been the best of late!
