Daily sports briefs | Race for Ferrari F1 seat hots up, relief for Liverpool fans, UFC Twitter wars take shape - and more!
RACE FOR FERRARI SEAT GETS HOT
Sebastian Vettel's announcement that he would be vacating his Ferrari seat after the 2020 season has ignited one of the most valuable games of musical chairs known to man. At this point the two front runners appear to be Carlos Sainz and Daniel Ricciardo with Red Bull's Max Verstappen ruling himself out. Essentially Sports reports that, according to a Ferrari insider, Sainz will get the seat with Ricciardo already lined up at McLaren for 2021.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: So Sainz would take Vettel's seat, Ricciardo would take Sainz's place at McLaren, leaving guess who for Ricciardo's Renault seat? Yep ... Vettel. Told you it was a proverbial merry-go-round!
RELIEF FOR LIVERPOOL FANS
Liverpool fans, who have waited patiently for their first title in 30 years, can breathe a massive sigh of relief after the FA confirmed that this season's Premier League will NOT be deemed null and void. That means that whatever system they come up with to determine the final league table, whether the season is completed or not, Liverpool will be champions. All kinds of permutations are being discussed at present, with the most complicated issue being that of the relegation spots. There is a lot at stake down there with no fair solution in sight.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: It would have been a terrible injustice had Liverpool not been handed the title after the record-breaking season they have had so far and NO I am not a Liverpool fan (Southampton for my sins)!
UFC TWITTER WARS TAKE SHAPE
As expected a post UFC 249 Twitter war has erupted with fighters jostling to get a piece of the new landscape in the stacked lightweight division. Justin Gaethje's sensational win over Tony Ferguson has opened up the division with the UFC's biggest drawcard, Conor McGregor, calling all the top contenders out. His latest? A cryptic "Super excited for the LW Title bout in July!". With Gaethje guaranteed a title fight vs Khabib Nurmagomedov next, it is hard to see how Conor sees this playing out, especially with Dana White not seeing McGregor in the main picture for now. As for the keyboard war, Nurmagomedov responded to an earlier jab from Conor with the following: "Made you grab air with your hands, and at the end you gave up."
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: McGregor literally owns the UFC ... he is such a money spinner, he can literally pick and choose opponents at will despite not being champion. This time though, it would be hard to see him muscling in ahead of a Nurmagomedov v Gaethje showdown. White is committed to that fight as is Gaethje ... and Nurmagomedov. Nurmagomedov would not give McGregor the fight now anyway.
