Daily sports briefs | Conor McGregor in extraordinary Twitter rant, 'The Last Dance' documentary continues to dominate headlines - and more!
CONOR WANTS GAETHJE'S TEETH IN A NECKLACE
Unsurprisingly, Conor McGregor has attempted to gatecrash the Justin Gaethje show by calling him out on Twitter. This is generally the UFC ritual that fighters engage in to pre-empt a fight.
"Your teeth. I’m going to put them on a f*****g necklace," was his shot at Gaethje while Conor had a pretty busy night also taking jabs at the other top contenders in the division including Tony Ferguson, Dustin Poirier and Khabib Nurmagomedov.
He had this to say about Ferguson: "His methods and conversation are humorous/enjoyable but he was never the level perceived."
And this about Poirier: "Dustin, although game, and in the mix, will be fed to the floor again. Couple wins here/there then folded in half. Rinse and repeat - Dustin career."
As for his old nemesis Nurmagomedov: "Khabib you absolute embarrassment. Scurrying, hiding rat as usual."
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: Either Conor had hit his "Proper Twelve" whiskey too hard or he is putting all contenders on alert that he is ready for his next big fight ... most likely a bit of both! Gaethje v Khabib is set in stone so it could end up being either a massive payday for Ferguson or Poirier in a blockbuster McGregor fight.
NO NEUTRAL FOR EPL PROJECT RESTART
It is either "Park" or "Drive" for the EPL's hanging-by-a-thread "Project Restart" as two/thirds of the 20 teams voted against using neutral venues to finish the season. Also tellingly, the FA confirmed that if the season ended now, the current standings would be used to determine the champions, relegated teams and Champions League qualification. With the EPL set to meet the government to discuss these developments and many players voicing concern over their safety, "Project Restart" is on shaky ground.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: We are still hopeful that a way forward can be found BUT acknowledge that a series of positive tests could really send the scheduling into a tailspin.
"THE LAST DANCE" DOC CONTINUES TO DOMINATE US SPORTS HEADLINES
In a sign of the times, the 10-part Michael Jordan documentary, "The Last Dance" continues to dominate sports headlines across US media outlets. One of the NBA's biggest stars and in the GOAT conversation himself, LeBron James, has been a keen observer. Referencing the day MJ announced his retirement, LeBron tweeted the following:"Definitely cried this day. 9 years of age. Just couldn't believe it."
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: If you love sports, you cannot miss this show. Brilliantly edited and put together, it showcases MJ's will to win and what it takes to be the best. As good as LeBron is, he doesn't come close to MJ in our opinion.
