Paarl - Part of the international contingent of paddlers taking part in the Berg River Canoe Marathon that starts on Wednesday morning, Petr Mojžíšek of the Czech Republic and German Matthias Schmidt got a suitably warm welcome in Paarl as a cold front swept over the region bringing rains that will be an important factor to the race.
On hand to greet the two Europeans were the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Anroux Marais and the Drakenstein Executive Deputy Mayor Councillor Gert Combrink, along with Team Capensis Change A Life paddlers Khumbulani Nzimande and Siyanda Gwamanda.
Schmidt is making his Berg debut, but can count on the experience of the big Czech man Mojžíšek, who is returning to the race for a third time, having finished third in 2017.
Both Roux and Combrink got to test the waters of the Berg River as they were taken for a paddle by local paddlers Joshua Erasmus and Eugon Williams.
The race starts above the Market Street bridge in Paarl at 09:00 on Wednesday.
