Gothenburg - Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, skippered by Ian Walker, won the 12th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race on Monday.

Walker, 45, became the first British skipper to win offshore yachting's premier event, which was launched 41 years ago as the Whitbread Round the World Race.

His team was the first from the Gulf region to enter the triennial race in 2011-12, but could only finish fifth on that occasion.

Fifth place in the ninth and final leg of the 38 739 nautical mile (nm), nine-month offshore race was enough to confirm overall victory.

Turkish/American challengers, Team Alvimedica, won the 1 000nm stage from Lorient, France, to Gothenburg, via a pit-stop in The Hague.

The Alvimedica victory ensured all but one of the seven-strong fleet won at least one stage in the race.
