Transformation a priority: Sam

Johannesburg - South Africa's Olympic boss, Gideon Sam, has called on rugby unions and role players in the sport to make transformation a top priority.

Sam, the president of the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) was addressing the SA Rugby Union (SARU) transformation indaba in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

“Let transformation not be the poor cousin of all your programmes," Sam said.

"Don’t let it lie down there, the transformation issue, so that it must come back from time to time to breathe life into it."

Sam said it was important that representatives from provincial rugby unions steered transformation to ensure there was an even playing field in the sport.

SARU chief executive Jurie Roux hoped the indaba would lead to a watershed moment for rugby in the country.

The transformation workshop was attended by provincial rugby union presidents and chief executives, SARU management, sports portfolio committee chairperson Richard Mdakane and sports minister Fikile Mbalula.

I dont know how to break this news to you mr Sam....but here it is : rugby is not an olympic sport!! So keep yourself busy with your own problems anf leave rugby alone.

To be fair, as Olympic boss he is an expert on transformation. Just look at the success story of transformation in SA swimming!

I for one always support winning over politics. The best players should always be selected.

blah, blah blah election, blah blah blah election...with talk like that our honourable minister of sport should watch his back...

  • phumi.ntlabati - 2012-10-30 15:43

After he failed his goal of achieving 12 gold medals in the Olympic, Mr. Gideon Sam promised this republic that he will resign. But why are not surprised? It's typical of African leaders of wanting to cling on to power at all costs, even if it means stalling progress! We urge Mr. Sam whilst his reputation is still intact, to do the honorable thing, and step down as promised! One Jacob Zuma is enough!!!

Mr. Sam the last thing SA rugby needs is your involvement and interference.
