Cancellara set for 3-year Trek

Vienna - Switzerland's 2008 Olympic time-trial champion Fabian Cancellara will ride for the Trek team for the next three seasons, he announced on Monday.

The 32-year-old - also a quadruple world time-trial champion - said he was excited by American outfit Trek's plans for the future once his present team RadioShack-Leopard withdraws from the sport at the end of the season.

"It is time for me to say where I will be in the future and what my plans are," said Cancellara, who has opted to compete in the Tour of Austria instead of the Tour de France.

"In 2014, I will be part of the Trek team," added Cancellara, who made the announcement through a video broadcast on Youtube and then on his Twitter account.

Cancellara, a three-time winner of the Paris-Roubaix classic, said the team were working on a lot of projects.

"We are working on numerous things and I think there will be a lot of work ahead," said Cancellara, who has earned the nickname of 'Spartacus' from his rivals for his athletic and powerful build.

"However, I am very excited about the project for the next three years."

Cancellara, winner of eight stages on the Tour de France, was under contract with Radioshack-Leopard until the end of this season.

Bicycle manufacturers Trek announced on June 26 it would replace RadioShack as the senior partner in the team.

Trek took the decision after Luxembourg billionaire Flavio Becca, who financed the Leopard team that evolved into Radioshack, revealed several weeks ago he would be withdrawing his financial support from the team.
