Cape Town - Former EFC flyweight title challenger Gary Joshua is in talks to face Englishman Coner Hignett at GrandWest Arena in Cape Town on April 13.

Matchmaker Graeme Cartmell is trying to book the fight for EFC 78, which is headlined by a unification bout between bantamweight champion JP Buys (6-2) and interim champ Luthando Biko (5-1).

Cartmell told fans during a Q&A session on Facebook: “I’m trying to stitch up a fight on this card, this is a tentative, but I’m going to release it because I think you guys are going to love it. It’s Coner Hignett, who is so damn good, (a) top British fighter, against Gary Joshua.

“Hopefully we can get that done. That’s at flyweight. That will be a great way for Gary to get back in there. I know Gary is keen on that fight.”

Joshua (4-1), who trains under Steve Bazzea at Straight Blast Gym CT in Fish Hoek, is looking to rebound from a fifth-round submission loss to flyweight king Nkazimulo Zulu (10-2-1) in the Mother City in November 2018.

Zulu is already scheduled to fight on the main card of EFC 78, against Hignett’s (6-4) compatriot Jake Hadley (3-0).

Like Joshua, Hignett also tasted defeat last time out, suffering a first-round TKO at the hands of Sam Creasey (10-2) at Cage Warriors 96 in September 2018.

The Liverpool-based athlete is currently preparing to battle Alex Valyandis (5-0) for the vacant UK Fighting Championships belt in Preston on March 23.

He’s fought once before in the EFC, losing to Bokang Masunyane (5-0) by unanimous decision about a year ago.
