EFC fighter stripped of title for 'ape' comment

Sun City - The EFC has stripped heavyweight champion Danie 'Pitbull' van Heerden of his title and suspended him until further notice.

On Thursday, Van Heerden released a post of an offensive nature on social media before deleting the post and apologising to his scheduled opponent at EFC 54, Zimbabwe's Elvis Moyo.

Van Heerden had been scheduled to defend his title against Moyo at Sun City on Saturday, October 15.

“This type of behavior is completely unacceptable by anyone, regardless of whether you are a champion or not, and will not be tolerated,” stated EFC president Cairo Howarth.

“We will not tolerate any form of racism by our athletes.”

An official disciplinary hearing will be held with Van Heerden and the sanctioning body, MMA SA.

Former two-time champion Andrew ‘One Gear’ van Zyl has stepped in to face Moyo for the now vacant heavyweight title.
