Durban - A dramatic last minute scratching of the race favourite Hawwaam opened the door for 2018 winner Do It Again to become the fifth horse in the 123 years of the Durban July to win back-to-back when he snuck home at Greyville on Saturday.
Trained by Justin Snaith and ridden by Richard Fourie, the gelding was always going to be up there with the contenders and when Hawwaam was scratched following an injury on entrance to the starting gate, the defending champion slipped into the favourites slot to bag the R4.25 million.
Another pre-race contender Rainbow Bridge came home in second place, outsider Twist of Fate bagged third place and it was Eyes Wide Open who came home in fourth place.
Snaith finished with two horses in the top five when S'manga Khumalo ridden Miyabi Gold came across the line in fifth place.
