Johannesburg - Sascoc president Gideon Sam has urged national sports federations to unite and push the transformation agenda forward, Sascoc said.

He was speaking at the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) presidents council meeting in Johannesburg on Saturday, the committee said in a statement.

Sascoc's board members, the nine provincial confederations and 53 national federations met to discuss various issues of concern and plans to enhance South African sport at all levels.

"Over the recent period, we have taken a lot of decisions in the presidents council and implemented some of them successfully, but others have not been achieved," said Sam.

Among what was discussed was the transformation charter, school sport, funding, relationships with local government, and high performance.

Sascoc CEO Tubby Reddy told the meeting of the milestones that had been achieved in the area of high performance.

"We have produced elite athletes globally who are respected role models. In addition, we renewed the Operation Excellence (Opex) programme and plans for these athletes were put in place.

"We would like to revisit the Opex concept so that we also take into consideration and assist athletes with high potential."

Reddy said the coaching framework was in place and a talent identification system had been implemented in many national federations.

The meeting discussed the need to push the transformation agenda forward and stressed that transformation and the development of sport should be visible in all provinces and districts.

Sam said Sascoc's core business was to make sure sport was represented on the ground.

"National federation representatives should go to all their districts and find out if there is sport development and, if not, then we can take the issues forward," he said.

It was agreed the SA Local Government Association would work with Sascoc so that municipalities could provide adequate facilities to enhance sport development.
