Le Clos wins big in Barcelona

Johannesburg - Olympic gold medallist Chad le Clos added the 200m freestyle silver medal to his medal tally on the second night of the Barcelona leg of the Mare Nostrum series on Thursday. 

Le Clos won the gold medal in the men’s 200m butterfly and bronze in the 50m butterfly on Day 1.

Sebastiaan Verschuren of the Netherlands won the freestyle event in a time of 1:54.90 with Le Clos following behind in 1:55.11 while Danish swimmer Viktor Bromer grabbed bronze in 1:55.46. 

On Wednesday the South African posted the second fastest time this season in the 200m butterfly clocking 1:54.90 in a new championship record. 

Daiya Seto of Japan, who holds the world-leading time of 1:54.46 finished behind Le Clos in a time of 1:55.11 with Danish swimmer Viktor Bromer taking third with 1:55.46. 

Cameron van der Burgh continued to gain ground on world record holder Adam Peaty of Great Britain in their tussle for breaststroke supremacy. 

The Olympic gold medallist finished in second place behind Peaty in a time of 27.29 seconds with the Briton touching first, clocking 27.25 as Finnish swimmer Sami Aaltomaa touched third in 27.67. 

On the first day Van der Burgh won the the bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke in 1:00.68 with Peaty finishing atop the podium with a time of 59.55 seconds with Japan’s Yasuhiro Koseki taking second place in a time of 59.81. 

Freestyle specialist Myles Brown continued the medal haul when he turned his attention to the longer distance by winning the bronze medal in the 800m. 

Canadian Ryan Cochrane was in superb form opening a considerable gap on the rest of the line-up winning in a time of 7:52.51. 

Briton Stephen Milne finished behind him in a time of 7:56.12 with Brown finishing in a distant third, clocking 7:58.35.
